    My car wash business got caught by surprise this winter when we got a huge gas bill. My boiler had been running excessively and I needed to find a quick way to slow it down before my profits went to zero.
    I used a Wyze smart plug to set up times when my radiant floor heat should run and when it could be shut off.

    You can wire your boiler into your weepmizer for it to turn on with the freezing temps.

    Get an in-pipe temp sensor and put it into the return pipe. Then let that one turn on the boiler when the return flow temp is near freezing (you need to test how much higher you need to set it). Then set the pump to run whenever there's a danger of freezing (i.e. at a higher temp than the boiler threshold). The pump should be much cheaper to run than the boiler.
    That way, the glycol will only be heated to a temperature that's enough to keep the concrete above freezing, no matter what the air temp is.
    Note that you may need to adjust the glycol temp depending on the air temp. (If you can get both sensors on the same smart system, you can set up multiple temperature profiles.) Ideally, you'd have a temp sensor directly inlaid in the surface of the concrete, but as that's cheap to retrofit, you need to adjust for the temperature gradient from the pipes to the surface.

      What Henry Describes is how mine are set up. One thermostat turns both the boiler and the pump on. One thermostat tells em both to shut off. I think......

    Great work. Always thought a car wash would be fun to own. When you said Utah I thought that was cool then I looked up the location of the wash and it's about 15 minutes from me. haha I'll give it a try at some point. Keep it up.

    Ditch timer. Turn on circulation pump at 40 outside, furnace burner will run automatically based on returning fluid temp set point.

      The issue I have had in the past is the boiler does not turn off because it may be undersized for the 5 bays I am heating so it just runs non stop.

    Will it integrate with a nest or honeybee thermostat. I know our nest is suppose to even track the weather to predict cold and proactively react. Im in the same boat right now.

    So what is the update on this fix? How much is your gas bill now?

    • @therevestor
      @therevestor  Год назад +1

      I setup the schedule to completely turn off at night when I had no customers and come back on at 6am. I cut the bill in half with that alone.

      @@therevestor Damn! So that is now ~$500 a month during the winter! That is still expensive! Thankfully I am in Charlotte North Carolina, so maybe if I buy a car wash, that is not a problem, at least for heating the floor in the bays. My guess is that you do that for two reasons, 1.) to prevent the drains from freezing up and 2.) prevent any accidents with people pulling in and out the bays (reduce liability). However, there was a few nights this year that reached below freezing in Charlotte, so you would still need to do something to prevent pipes from freezing. I know you had a pipe that circulates hot water within the insulated areas from the equipment room to the bays. That may be best. I inspected a potential car was I wanted to buy in Charlotte and none of the lines to the bays were covered and they were the cheap thin plastic lines.

    The only thing I would have wired differently is to only switch the power off to the pump, and allow the smart switch to be powered at all times, in other words keep the outlet at 100% power feeding the smart switch, then feed the thermostat with your pigtail and then allow the thermostat to shut the pump off, and then the smart switch will only allow power to the thermostat during your schedule. that way the smart switch wont have wifi problems and constant re-connects to the wifi network. And you will be able to turn it off AT ALL TIMES, where right now your only able to do so if the thermostat is allowing power to pass into the outlet.

    why heating ground if there is no snow? is it to evaporate the water?? whats the purpese of that

    • @therevestor
      @therevestor  2 года назад +2

      Hey thats a good question. Even though there is no snow the floor and concrete could be below freezing temperature so when customers use the wash the water that is used could turn to ice and essentially make the whole facility into a dangerous ice rink.

    It looked like there was a thermostat inside the boiler which controlled the gas valve, shouldn't that have been the thing being controlled instead of the circulation pump so that when it is satisfied, the pump is still running(but not being heated) so it can't freeze up overnight?

    • @therevestor
      @therevestor  2 года назад

      The thermostat in the boiler is a high temp shut off. With as long as my pipe runs are and big space I am heating the boiler could run nonstop and it would never hit that high temp level. The pipes and fluid will not freeze because I am using glycol
