    Thank God for the Taipei Metro system. It makes traveling around the city a breeze and it's an absolutely world-class system in every way. I also appreciate the easy availability of pre-cooked meals for sale in convenience stores, microwaved by the efficient store staff for those who need a balanced meal without spending time in a restaurant.

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Ben, yes, we agree about the food in the local convenience stores. We did have to make sure we told the clerk that we didn't want our food heated because sometimes we were buying something at night for breakfast or some other point. Our Airbnb had a microwave, but of course that isn't always the case. And we absolutely LOVE a good transit system. We love that about Taipei, and regret that we didn't have more time/better weather to do some of the side trips that we wanted to do. We have an episode coming out this Saturday from our experience at the night markets that we hope you'll also enjoy! -Judy

    I spent four days in Taipei in mid-March and thoroughly enjoyed it as it was a layover stop on my way back from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I missed the earthquake by just over two weeks, and am glad that the apparent damage in the city was minimal. Nice footage and commentary on this city. It was fun to see many of the same places I'd visited as well. I found the people to be quite friendly, and it is not overrun by Westerners and Americans as so many places are. In fact, I could walk for several hours on busy streets and not see a fellow Westerner. I would definitely go back again, and next time would try to get out of Taipei to explore more of the country if possible.

    • @FindingGinaMarie

      Thanks so much for watching, John! We agree with absolutely everything you said. The earthquake foiled our plans for a visit to Hualien and Taroko Gorge, and the rain derailed the other side trips we wanted. Because of the great transportation system, there's really no reason to not explore more outside of Taipei. We definitely would like to go back and cover some fresh ground outside of Taipei proper. This Saturday we bring you to the night markets! Curious what you thought about HCMC. We have a few episodes from there as well. -Judy

    One very fun thing to do in Taipei (and in all of the major cities in Taiwan) is to explore the alleyways. Taiwan is very safe in terms of security, so alleyway exploring is recommended for anyone who seeks a little bit of adventure or surprise.

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  8 месяцев назад +7

      We agree! Some of the best places to eat in any country are in the alleyways. We weren't concerned for our safety, but we weren't sure if we'd be welcome since it sometimes can feel like locals want to keep some places from being overly touristed. But the places we visited were very welcoming, and we highly recommend them! Thank you so much for watching! This Saturday we'll be sharing our experiences from the night markets! -Judy

      Hi David, We are now in South Korea, but we ended up writing an entire guide to help others during natural disasters while traveling. We lived in San Francisco for several years, but the earthquakes there weren't as intense as the one we experienced in Taipei. Fortunately, the buildings in Taipei are either built to withstand earthquakes or retrofitted. Everything in Taipei did fine, but it did mean we couldn't visit Taroko Gorge, which was on our list of places to explore. But your advice is solid; one of the things we suggest is to ask your host specifically what their instructions are in the event of a natural disaster. Thanks for watching! -Judy

    Glad you enjoyed Taiwan. Been living in New Taipei for almost 2 years after 6 years in China and 2 in Korea. The food here even in just little random crappy looking street stores is just amazing. Never ate so well in my life and also food saftey is good (Cough* China where every meal is a dance with gutter oil). Friendly people, most people speak decent English so its easy for tourists but a little mandarin goes a long way (mine is semi fluent but my reading is awful). The Chinese culture is also real Chinese culture that survived unlike the mainland where Mao destroyed it all. Absolutely love Taipei and hope people will see this and want to visit. Also you feel like something is happening all the time and its got a grimey, gritty feel unlike more polished places like Japan (which I also love).

    • @FindingGinaMarie

      We're glad to hear your perspective on Taipei and some of your background. We spent a month in Busan and really enjoyed it (and a weekend in Seoul, which we really enjoyed so much more than we thought we might. At least where we stayed and explored, it had a smaller city feel than what I expected, which was NYC on steroids). We found that people in Taipei really appreciated when we made even a slight amount of effort to speak to them in Chinese. We realized too late about its interesting eco system and wish we'd been able to explore more. It's one reason we're glad to be full-time travelers and can easily return. We also enjoyed Japan tremendously, but sometimes it felt a little too perfect, so we can appreciate your point about the attraction of someplace being a little gritty. -Judy
