The liberation of the Dutch city of Rotterdam in 1945 in color! De bevrijding van Rotterdam in 1945.

  • Like The Hague, Rotterdam was liberated on 8 May 1945 from German rule during the Second World War.
The German capitulation is then a fact and the retreat of the German troops begins immediately. The entry of the Canadians leads to delirious joy. Handkerchiefs and flags are waved and flowers and serpentines are thrown.
Although Germany capitulated on May 4, it remained restless in the city until May 8 and the withdrawal of the Germans was chaotic, partly because they did not want to surrender to the Rotterdammers but to the Allies.
On May 7, the German commander has still not capitulated, but commanders of the Interior Forces take up residence in the town hall. The mayor and aldermen of the NSB and some other wrong leaders are arrested.
Rotterdam suffered like no other city during this war. Already at the beginning of the war, the old center was almost completely bombed by the Germans on 14 May 1940, with the aim of forcing the Dutch government to capitulate.
In this film, the joy of the people of Rotterdam bursts from the screen. We see the vehicles of the liberators moving through the battered city, cheered by the crowds that have lined up all along the route. A large group of nurses even climbs on the army vehicles and gets carried away in the column of army vehicles.

    NEDERLANDS
    ===========

This is A.I. colorized footage plus the use of the latest A.I. video enhancer software. I must admit that the colorizer needs improvement as regards colorizing large groups of people. It is 4 years since its maker released this software (and still no white smoke)...
PS: I know the music is a bit over-the-top, but it was the best I could find with the right duration. Just turn down the volume if you don't like it.

Thank you for presenting this so well. My late Father was with the Toronto Scottish (MG) Regiment and their Tactical Group Number was 64!! Many of the vehicles shown in the film had the #64 on the front fender but I was not able to ID the cap badge as TorScots. My Father was the driver of the Universal Carrier (B Company, 5th Platoon). Cheers.

Not to be missed in all this. Canada in 1945 only had a population of 12 million people and had been a country for 78 years (still a child compared to it's European cousins). Yet, it was able to field a large army, made up of volunteers, who travelled across the ocean and contributed significantly to the liberation of Europe. Clearly punching way above it's weight.

As a boy in the 50 and all my life I had a great interest in this kind of film, but they were just history films .. but you have now made them really put life into all those people, brought them back to life as they were all those years ago, I know most of the thees places having spent 14 years as a Brit soldier in Germany with the British Army on the Rhine (BAOR) in Bielefeld, Celle, Munster, Osnabruck, served with the Dutch Army, traveled to the UK from Rotterdam, Vlissingen,, we used to drive over the border to Holland most weekends, , and we had a great time , one again Thank you

Thanks Patti. Yesterday I spent over 3 hours trying to find suitable music! I wanted cheerful, no too bombastic music for this video. The problem also was that it has to be copyright-free and of the right length. After a long search I was so exhausted of having to listen to hundreds of pieces of music and nearly gave it up.
Luckily I suddenly found this music. It is a bit over-the-top but the best I could find.

Canadian forces comprised the majority of the troops liberating the Netherlands and the Dutch Royal Family were sheltered in exile in Ottawa for the duration of WWII. The Dutch People are grateful to this day for the efforts of the Canadians in their behalf against the Nazi's. Why do you feel the need to nitpick?

Quite incredible to think you're looking at empty fields dead in the centre of the city, not some outskirt... It would be years before it would all be filled up. Even my mother (1955) can remember the open spaces in the centre in front of the central station. There was even a small park with deer near Hofplein.

It's not the shampoo, my grandmother told me at the end of the war there was nothing at all whatsoever.
No soap, no medicine, no food, no wood, nothing!
In the west of the Netherlands during the "hongerwinter" 20000 people died from hunger.
Dead people where buried in the same coffin where they removed the bottom above the grave because there was no wood so they could use it again.
In houses with wooden floors people removed the wood to keep warm.
