The boy Johnny Stewart was such a natural and expressive actor who worked well with William Holden. I remember seeing this over and over on Million Dollar Movie in New York during the early sixties. Thank you for finding this gem.
@@chuckthebull I think you are absolutely correct, as I had wondered the exact same thing about that gifted young actor. I was unable to find out any more information Online, which is quite unusual. Hopefully someone else can shed light on what happened to him.
THANK YOU THANK YOU !! This was my favorite movie growing up as I went track to track with my Dad - What a GIFT to see this for the holiday time !! Shine your light BRIGHTLY !!! I know I will be SHINING MINE - what a blessing!!!
Saw it for the first time around 1975......on the late show on TV....was shocked at how good it was...I knew many jockeys around South Louisiana and knew how accurate the film was...brings back so many memories.......

I totally understand where you’re coming from. I too only watch old movies now, since the new ones have become pretty cheap and woke and un educational. My wife’s aunt worked in Hollywood with the Coen brothers (retired for some time now). She said there’s only several plots they regurgitate and they all happen the day the $h@t hits the fan. That’s why these movies are great because they’re the plots the first time around and involve a little bit more intellect. Good and clean also!
What shall one say... William Holden... he did it again...! I've known many man-boy-horse-storylines like this one - but somehow I never get tired of them. :-)
when i was down and out, a good friend of my sister wanted me to be a horse jockey at the golden gate field , not far from oakland ca. only problem with that, i wasn't mean enough and don't want to hang around with the mobster. i kept away from this crowd and used what i learned from the AF as overhaul technician for a major airline. God always provides a way out when you are down and out. i love horses that's why l love to watch the old cowboy BW movies, Lone Ranger, Rin Tin Tin, wild bill hickcot, cheyanne, roy roger and the old tomstone. thanks for this great movie! william holden and gary cooper made great old cowboy movies.
I left home in 1976 and went to the "big apple", Ruidoso. Well I ended up in Southern California and loved it. As a racetracker, this is the most authentic movie. The writers knew the track life.... Thanks for posting, I saw part of it , but had to leave to take a horse to the post....
Yeah, I read lot of big actors would go to the track for horse racing. In 'life's too short' micky rooneys biography'.so it was probably late 30s 40s 50s micky didn't mellow till later. Lots of money people Big bucks show off. Most would win very few times, lost everytime there were some actors up coming ready to hit big MGM. The horse track was a fun place too looney and many were In hock with the mob. . These guys found dead (one bullet wound to the head usually, never a chase although im sure they probably chased people who looked at them accidently on bad day) one actor committed from suicide because of his dept. The rush experienced mustve been explosive winning at horse track plus poppin bennies along with scalding hot black coffee . I'll never know because I forget
What a great movie! William Holden was fantastic as always. He's always very low key and believable no matter what the role. But it was refreshing to see Stanley Clements in a major role. I've always liked/admired him after seeing him stealing the film, Tall Dark & Handsome. I always wondered why he wasnt better known as he was an extremely fine actor. The film was fantastic! I really don't care for horseracing but this film had me hooked from beginning to end! They really don't make films like anymore, from a great tight script to extremely gifted believable actors, it was pure magic! Thank you so much for posting.
I lost count of how many comments I read but it was heart warming to read such quality replies it should be compulsory viewing every where e.g. schools and a sitting of Parliament incredible to have the privilege to watch it infinite thanks for bringing it to us ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
this movie was a top favorite 45 years ago - in fact...listed on school papers as my favorite movie...Its WAY BETTER than I remembered...so glad you brought this one here
Interesting/informative.entertaining.. Enjoy viewing the pick ups & trailers/horse auctioneer/dress of that era. A wonderfully family oriented movie-!!!🤗.
Behind the romanticized façade of Thoroughbred horse racing is a world of injuries, drug abuse, gruesome breakdowns, and slaughter. Nothing remotely family friendly about that
I love Horses and horse racing. My favorite Grandfather was from Louisville Kentucky. His daughter was born on Derby Day .He want to name her Derby Downs ,but my favorite Grandmother insisted on Nancy Grey lol. Happy Derby Day .
This is one of the best films on human relationship through horse racing, one of the best from Hollywood: warm, exciting, entertaining and so touching. What a great film!
I remember watching this movie when I was very, very young. I haven't began to watch this movie because I want to see how accurate I could remember it. I remember a young boy. Something happened where he began to sob uncontrollably. I remember a race, where the name "White Cargo" kept being announced. White Cargo eventually won the race, of course.
What a terrific racing movie with my favorite actor. William Holden! What a man! What an actor! This was a movie I missed; it seems his old movies are seldom run on movie channels. Too bad.
I have a playlist on youtube with some of his films people uploaded on youtube , here you can watch them (and more)ruclips.net/p/PLQ0sthk-4mqKsar-eiwhjPNnfxXtUReG2
Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this great movie! I'm an "oldies" movie lover along with William Holden as one of my all-time favorite actors. I think this is William Holden's greatest character he ever played and I think his greatest performance! I never knew this movie even existed and this is my first time ever seeing it. What a movie!
I was thinking: "That can't be too hard." So, believe it or not, at age 74 and not in too bad of shape I just tried it. What in the world was I thinking? I'm lucky a chair was nearby that I could grab; otherwise I would probably be riding in an ambulance right now. Holden was known for doing some outlandish balancing & strength stunts.
Hey, that was pretty darn good! I know less than nothing about horse racing and even less about acting, but this seemed to be a very realistic film, plus the acting was great.

what agreat movie wow fully enjoyed it
GREAT film.....thanksalot. Good knowing Johnny Stewart is still among us at 88 today
terrific acting by Stewart, watched for 12th time supporting cast superb...Preacher Cole one of the best Basil was an opera star,
