Wow what a great find this video is. Although I was born after this video was made this is how I remember it as a kid. Unbelievable how much green space there was around the town centre back then that's been taken up with flats now.
It looks like a smart modern town there with a bright commercial and residential future ahead. There is an awful lot to answer for as to what has happened subsequently that gave the town its poor reputation as an eyesore. Someone with a vision of what could be at the council really needs to grab hold of things. Modern towns can still be attractive places to live and work.
Seems like such a nicer time to be alive, not a single person with their face glued to their phone, no little shit teenagers causing commotion in gangs. Just people going about their daily lives and conversing face to face, doing what communities should be doing. I was born in 1988 but sometimes I feel like I was born a few generations late. I still remember the town looking very similar to this video though
TenaciousDean88 I was born the same year this footage was shot so this is the town I grew up with - it has changed a lot but over the last couple of years and not always for the better. The amount of homeless people now around the town centre is a worsening problem.
I was born in Basingstoke it has changed so much I miss going to the market on a Saturday morning

Live in Basingstoke for about four years - moved away in summer 1974. This is pretty much as I remember it...
I moved here 2007. It's almost unrecognisable!
The old town was better I think.? I was born in Basingstoke in 1972 and I still live here. Great video.
