I've seen this video more times than I can count, and that damn slide projector still blows my mind! It's that moment at the end when you see Martin with the laptop and the legos, and all I can think is "wow, just wow". Truly an amazing visual technique that no one else has done (that I know of) In one of his videos he says he lived in that shack for something like 6 months, and this video was the main result of it
It became a type writer when he performed live because it's easier plus the slide projector here was edited to make the sound correct but type writers can be controlled by hand
Wait. So they had to not only make and record a stop motion lego animation, but then put that onto slides, and then record a stop motion of THAT. AMAZING.

Dear Wintergatan,It is physically impossible for me to express my gratitude towards you in a simple text-based interface. However, I will say to you here in this text-based interface that you are absolutely my favorite band ever. EVER. Especially this song - which is my second favorite song ever - soooo emotional and, just, how do I say it? Inspiring. It has saved me from numerous bad moods, and in some cases has saved me from total depression. And the chills I get every single time when that star appears - no other song can do that. You are truly amazing and have earned my gratitude. I wish I could like this video a thousand times. You are just truly the definition of awesome.Thank you very much for making my life - and thousands of others lives - that much better. Thank you.-Steve
The amount of talent in this video is too damn high. So not only are they insanely talented musicians, they just so happen to be master craftsmen. Can they adopt me?
If I'm having a bad day, this is where I come! This song... it's like pure happiness... no. Actually, more like pure... empathy. That's the word. One of my favorite songs ever (number two, actually)! 2:52 always gives me goosebumps and chills, as long as I haven't watched it ten times that day already!
it's really funny that everyone's like "this song is pure joy" because I actually honestly feel like this song is really sad in like a bittersweet way (until the end) but like when the Modulin jumps in it felt really sad, you know?
This song feels like a place and time which is fondly remembered, but which can never be revisited in person; only through memories and shared experiences
Sure, but I'm pretty certain Spectreman doesn't *really* think downvoters lack an immortal soul and are physically incapable of smiling at anything. :p It's just a hyperbolic expression, which by exaggeration makes the point that people who downvote this video are pretty negative folks. It's a statement I agree with, I gotta add. Because objectively, you have to be pretty negative in order to *not* see the beauty in this video, and not value the effort that Wintergatan clearly invested in creating it.
I like to think the dislikers are mostly people who want to downvote stuff to just to troll and/or bring some theoretical balance to the universe, but that could just be me trying to stay positive
I rarely comment on things, but I care enough about this to comment here. This is my all time favorite song from this band, and out of any song I've heard. There's so much to this song to me. Even without the images, it tells a story. That's what I love about this band. You make songs that tell stories. Especially this one. I love how in the start the song feels lonely, but hopeful. It's melancholy, it's bittersweet. Yet somehow, as the song progresses, you repeat that exact leitmotif, but make it sound more hopeful, and eventually triumphant. I ask myself every time I hear this song: "How did he do that??" That's what I want to learn how to do. You are a musical genius, and I can only hope to be even half as good as you. I actually wonder if there is any way I could get the sheet music for this song. I'd love to learn how to play it on piano, and I would even want to send you my cover if I get good enough. It's my favorite song, and I've managed to learn the main melody by ear, but the chord progression is what particularly escapes me. Thank you for making such stellar music!
So uh… confession time. When I first heard this song in one of your live performance recordings, it made me cry. This is the only song that’s been able to do that, and fairly consistently at that. Just… something about it hits my nostalgia just right. And I’ll always cherish it because of that. Thank you for putting that beauty out into the world.
Found this song today and it's suddenly on repeat... what an amazing tune. Brings a smile to my face and makes me think of carefree, brighter days. Thank you for this. It means a lot. :)
Its crazy to comeback and rewatch some of these older music videos you guys did back a little over a decade ago. I remember several years ago when I first watched these and the music is just as fantastic now as it was then. But what's made me had a deeper appreciation for these videos is the behind the scenes footage they left at the end of each video. I recall a late teen adult thinking it was so cool getting to see these sneak peaks, but i think I have an even bigger appreciation for them now as I now better understand all the time spent to create art, from making these instruments like the iconic original music box and the Modulin, to Martin translating the notes from the computer program and marking and manually punching out each and every note, to even show the process of designing the stop motion animations for these videos. I do hope that one day, these kinds of music videos return with or without a marble machine, since these slice of life snippets at the end are also art and a treasure in it of itself.
Oh Wintergatan, what beautiful humans you are. Engineering meets music perfectly, just like everyone's said already. But did anyone else get the drum fill at 3:40 played without seemingly raising an eyebrow, and obviously incorporating the custom horizontal kick pedal? Sick.
I know it's been a long time since this song has came out but I just want to say to him, Never stop being yourself. I love your music. Good luck on the marble machine x. And thanks for bringing a new and wonderful genre of music to the world. It's amazing.
Honestly one of my favorite things about Wintergatan is how they are able to combine nearly any regular thing (such as a projector) with a beat and turn it into something that is an absolute joy to listen to.
