    Hi Knicole, I downloaded your practice chart. I loved it and found the knitting process quite easy -- but (there's always a "but", right?) my finished practice piece did not look like the design. I suspect it had something to do with me not knowing what to do with the red outlined section (my practice piece was 32 stitches wide). I looked for your guidance on the red outlined area, but couldn't find it. Can you give me a time stamp so I can locate it? Thanks!

    • @Knicoleknits
      @Knicoleknits  18 дней назад

      Oh my goodness! You're right - I just went back and watched and I didn't address how the outlined repeat section works. My apologies! Here's how you do it:
      If you only cast on 11 sts, then you work the chart exactly as shown.
      BUT, if you want to cast on more stitches, you're going to add them in multiples of 8 because there are 8 stitches inside the RED repeat lines.
      So, let's say you cast on 19 stitches. Now you're going to work the chart up to and including stitch 9, THEN you go back and work stitches 2-9 again, THEN finish the swatch with stitches 10 and 11.
      I hope that makes sense! 😋

  • @3Dhyana
    @3Dhyana 9 дней назад

    I'm a rank beginner. If I want to do 3 pattern repeats would I cast on 28 stitches, 1+24+3? Thank you.

    I've had 10 skeins of khaki and 2 skeins of dark purple Drops Silke-Tweed for the last12 years cuz I couldn't decide what to do with it. I finally decided to do a solid color cardigan and have finished 2/3 of it from the top down. Now after seeing how easy mosaics are I'm thinking I need to frog back a ways and add some mosaic to it. I guess I need to try it on to decide where to put it. Thanks Nicole, you just added some excitement to a boring knit. One question. Is there a trick to measuring sleeve length for a raglan sweater?

    • @Knicoleknits
      @Knicoleknits  18 дней назад

      Yay! I hope you have great fun playing with mosaic in your project.
      As for sleeve length, I usually focus on the measurement between the underarm and the desired sleeve length. That point can vary quite a bit depending on the fit. If it's a close fitting sweater, that underarm point is probably higher and so the sleeve would need to be longer. On a loose fit, the point would be lower and farther out, so the sleeve would end up shorter. Does that help? If you have more questions, let me know 😊

    I found this video very intriguing. I had never really understood mosaic knitting before this. Your explanation was perfectly clear! I took the sample chart and did a "test" swatch with three version of the colorwork -- I did one repeat in garter stitch mosaic, one repeat in stocking stitch mosaic and a final repeat in fair isle (purling the even # rows).
    I discovered I did not like the garter stitch for a few reasons - I had to remember to bring the yarn to the front when slipping the stiches, and I didn't care for the look of the finished pattern. I liked the stocking stitch better because I preferred the smoother look and the ease of stitching. When you are purling back, the yard is already on the back of the work. Very interesting lesson - THANK YOU!!!

    Bought the Walker book and was surprised to see how many swastika patterns are in it. I guess at the time it was published, folks didn't mind ancient Nordic motifs, but now I would be castigated for producing anything in those patterns. I personally know people who have been accused of heinous beliefs because they bought and wore trim based on historic Nordic motifs like these.

    I’m a spinner and my usual spin is a DK-weight. How would this knit up using mosaic??

    • @Knicoleknits
      @Knicoleknits  6 месяцев назад +3

      It can get a little dense, especially in garter stitch. Pick a mosaic pattern, start with 4.5 mm needle and do a swatch in both garter and stocking stitch and see how the fabric comes out. I generally find that one needle size up from the usual for the yarn weight is enough to resolve any density issues. 😊

      It should work well, you could work with either two colours of hand spun, or you could work with a plain dk/light worsted commercial yarn for one colour and a hand spun for the contrast, many of Andrea Mowry's patterns use spincycle yarns, which look quite like hand spun, so you could get a similar look with your own yarns. A 2 or 3 ply fractal spun yarn would have some lovely subtle colour changes.

    • @Knicoleknits
      @Knicoleknits  5 месяцев назад +2

      Not dense at all! You’re correct - in most charts there are stitches on either side of the pattern repeat. These stitches are worked only at the beginning and end of the row. UNLESS you’re working in the round, then you omit the edge stitches altogether. Clear as mud? 😁
