For 1,000's of years before we used sequences of 0's and 1's for programming computers, we used sequences of loops for nålbinding and then Knit and Purl for knitting patterns. (BTW the first "punch cards" were developed for machine weaving looms.) Great to see people appreciating how maths is used in textile art!

Yes I agree, ‘mistake knitting’ is sequence knitting. Why oh why doesn’t my mistake knitting come out like that? I guess my mistakes are myriad throughout the project. 😂 Can’t wait for your socks with sequence knitting. Love your ease of chatting like we’re having a cup of tea. Thank you.

I didn’t realize there was a name for it, but a friend from my Knitting Club was doing a knit 2 purl 2 over an odd number of stitches, and I absolutely love the way it looked.

New knitter, I’m mean VERY new. I like simple, so sequencing sounds like something up my alley. I’m an experienced crocheter, seamstress, embroiderer, but knitting has alluded me up until today. My closest friend was a master knitter and passed away suddenly. After three years her hubby called and asked if I’d like a bin of her favorite yarns. Talk about a huge blessing. Most are hand dyed, hand spun and a lot are sock yarns. I hate crocheted socks so I stood up to my stubborn non knitting self and said, “you’re gonna learn”. I found a RUclipsr teaching long tail casting on, and my journey (finally successful) began. I’ve only finished two projects, but I’m definitely hooked. Funny non accurate pun. Enjoyed your video. I think I understand (after hearing and seeing your description). Thanks for sharing. I feel like the spiral version of sequence knitting would drive me crazy (on my actual legs) due to neuropathy, but in a hat or a flat piece the textures would be awesome. I love experimentation after I master a craft, so once I get there with knitting I see myself doing a deep dive into it!

So glad you put this up! I've recently unpicked the bottom of a cardi and done a wavy rib which sounds like what you're talking about, and it's so pretty I'm intending to match the sleeves. But that will be knitting in the round! I hadn't realised I might have to think!

I just heard about Sequence Knitting and the book by Cecilia Campochiaro about three months ago. I haven't tried this yet, but I have lots of cotton and making dishcloths would be a great idea for exploring this technique. Thanks Jana.

It sounds a little bit like what we called "code knitting." That was a kind of combination of weaving design and knitting where you could "code" the letters of the alphabet by assigning them as a k or p stitch. I usually just alternated a = k, b = p, c = k, etc. and fortunately, our alphabet has an even number of letters. Then, you could take a person's name or any words, and "code" each letter with its corresponding stitch and use this as the base unit of the sequence. I usually kept the sequence small so the pattern would become visible sooner in the knitting. Using this technique I knit baby sweaters for my grandchildren in code patterns that spelled their names, and yes, the patterns looked different depending on whether I was knitting straight or in the round.
