  • Season 1, Episode 3: We talk to Tiran Porter, formerly of the Doobie Brothers, about his history with the band and his work with the White Album Ensemble. Porter spent 1971-80 with the Doobies, was re-recruited in 1987-92, and has played with more bands than you could count on three hands.

      Agreed. I met Tiran in the early 2000's. Tiran is a very approachable person and was kind enough to teach me how to play "Another Park, Another Sunday."

      @@stephenadamsmusicalinterpr4203 Tiran seems so approachable and a genuine dude. One of my favorite bass players of all time next to Kasim Sulton from Utopia...really turned the bass into just more than a rhythm instrument.

    Tiran Porter is without a doubt THE BEST bass player in the rock era. Listening to the older Doobs works, it is clear why the new band never quite made it. The energy and technique of Tiran did as much for the music as the two drum kits did. His playing was light years away from any other artist I have ever heard. God bless you Tiran, you have given us all years of pleasure listening to your gifted playing.

      100 percent correct....he is a killer bass player. His playing made the Doobies so awesome.

    • @panhead55
      @panhead55 7 месяцев назад +1

      Not to mention, he sang perfect harmonies over most of those complicated rhythms. The caliber of created bass players with vocal abilities will never be matched of those top tier talents from the 1970s-‘80s…

    Not only one of the best bassists, but one of the coolest too.
    In the Doobies he had a presence which made them stand out from the rest.

    Hands down one of the most underrated bassists ever. One of my earliest memories of wanting to play guitar was just my dad putting up a Doobies poster in my room. He just looked so badass that I wanted to play any kind of guitar, I didn't care which!

      1000% agree. He's the bass player that's had the biggest influence on my playing, second maybe only to McCartney. But really, Macca gets too busy sometimes. If I could play bass like one person, it would be Tiran. His musical sensibility is SO tasteful and perfect.

    One of the all-time great bassists of the 70's and still going strong 40 years later. He knows his instrument inside out and constructs wonderful melodic and rhythmic basslines.
    On top of all that he's a lovely guy! Good to see him getting some respect :)

    i'm very pleased to have watched this interview presentation. i've always enjoyed listening to Tiran's basslines & performances with The Doobie Bros. Porter was an underrated bassist which i believe it's an understatement! he's an amazing bass player with an incredible background voice & he's so cool on stage with his trademark cowboy hat. i've also loved the way he handled his vintage (very rare) Gibson EB-3 electric bass guitar with the slotted machine head tuners that are positioned backwards. extremely impressive video interview of a Living Legend Bassist!

      I had the HONOR of talking to Tiran Porter about 25 years ago. I had told my wife that I was a huge DOOBIE BROTHERS FAN and she said that she knew Tiran personally. I didn't believe her at first. Then, she showed me a picture of her niece and Tiran together! Turns out that Tiran and my wife's niece were living together in Tiran's house in the bay area. Her name was chevaughn(sp). I guess they dated for a while. Anyway, she said that she thought that Tiran still lived in the same house and she dialed the number she had for him. He answered the phone and the two of caught up. Then, my wife told Tiran that I would LOVE to say hello to a SUPERSTAR AND HE AGREED TO TALK TO ME! I was like a kid in a candy store! I was tongue tied and speechless! I did manage to tell him that I absolutely LOVED THE BAND and that the BEST THE DOOBIE BROTHERS EVER WERE is when he was on BASS AND VOCALS! He has such a GREAT VOICE! And, his bass playing is 2nd to none! It was definitely an HONOR to be able to talk to him like he was a friend of the family. Chevaughn passed away at a very early age which tore Tiran up. He stayed in the same house and, as far as we know, he is still living there. Mr. Porter is definitely one of the best BASS PLAYERS I'VE EVER HEARD! He said that he enjoyed being with the DOOBIE BROTHERS but it was time to move on to chase his own dreams. That conversation will always be one of my FAVORITE moments in life!! GOD BLESS YOU TIRAN PORTER!!!

    I am a 50-yr-old bass player and, to this very day, that syncopated fill Tiran plays leading into the second verse of "Listen to the Music" is my favorite bass lick. It isn't mind-blowing in the how'd-he-do-that?? sense, but it is absolutely perfect in its simplicity and in what it does for the song.

    I used to see Tiran Porter at Quement Electronics in San Jose in the 80’s. He was an avid video disc enthusiast in the days before DVD. Quement was a great place with everything from building electronics, ham radio and home theatre in San Jose on Bascom Ave. My favorite song of Tiran’s is “For Someone Special” he is an amazing musician and has an amazing voice!

    WHAT!! "I taught myself how to play by playing along with Beatles albums." Dude, this is EXACTLY how I learned how to play bass. My dad taught me the basic "Box" pattern, and I learned the rest during an entire summer spent in front of my parents' record player. I literally jolted in my chair when I heard him say this.
