I love to think of what a modern-day Oldsmobile lineup would be like: Achieva (compact sport coupe or sedan), Alero (mid-size sedan), Intrigue (executive sport sedan), Aurora (full-size sedan), Omega (compact SUV), Bravada (mid-size SUV), Silhouette (full-size SUV).
they came in 68-72 muscles cars from chevy olds and buick....I didn't realize they still had them in the 80s....people called them the brief case handle or the staple shifter....
Love the Toronado, this is even the rare base model one, i've owned 6 of these and have loved driving and wrenching on them! Can't beat the feel of a late 80s to early 90s Oldsmobile.
Redline0442 how was the reliability? I want one of these but I do not want it to be. Headache like my Aurora was. I was about to buy a 89 Trofeo but the guy had sellers remorse I think.
That's not true. Cars of this era either have fairly comfortable leather seats or cloth seats that one just sinks into, and not in a good way. The "head rests" are also generally useless.
@@VinylToVideo what are you talking about? sport seats? supportive seats? seats from this era like the toronado were designed to be like a couch, sink in them.
@@scoman73 Tiny headrests that don't contour to anyone's head along with thin seats often times of questionable material don't equate to a comfortable seat. There were plenty of comfortable vehicles of this time but even more that weren't.
Great video!! Love Oldsmobile. Thanks for sharing this cool car with us. I know some people find the 80's and 90's pretty bland as far as car design go but I love them and think that some pretty cool stuff came out of that period. Makes me wish they were still making them like this today.
Despite its "cookie cutter" GM styling, and the less-than-perfect electronics, this car has stood the test of time. With over 163K miles, it's in remarkable condition. I noticed a bit of the quintessential "poofing" of the cloth on the headliner, as well as the sun visors. During the 80's and early '90's, I dare anyone to deny that they ALL did this. I've seen some, well let's say, "creative" ways some people have tried to "fix" this. As far as the odd "key in ignition" warning, I believe that it's actually supposed to go "bing bing bing" instead of the solid tone. A tribute to the electronics of the day. Some may find the velour upholstery tacky. Say what you will until you sit on it. It is fabulous. It's never hot, nor cold. Take this car through sharp corners, and you will NOT slide around like you will with leather. It holds your pants like velcro. While some may consider calling this car a Toronado is akin to blasphemy, it's still a Toronado. I like it.
this was a fine car! I always wanted one in the early 90s, they were hard to find used. I will never understand how this country let oldsmobile, and pan American airlines go out of business?
Believe it or not this was the car that introduced me to the first 3800 in may of 87 I saw a gm engineer driving a black and gray toronado just like this one.
@@paulmarcoux207 The 97'-03 malibu is also a sister car to both the grand am and alero. I think olds had a rebadged malibu called the sierra cutlass. The newly introduced 2004-08 boxy ish style malibu IMO looks tacky esp the malibu maxx hatchback. Like no GM just nopee. Then they came out with the malibu SS with a 3.9 V6 from the impala??? Good choice after the recent review on the Buick Reatta, its twin for comparison purposes, specially because both models are rare birds even in their time, let alone now. These were exclusive, and rather expensive luxury coupes then, but like all glory, it's faded in time. Still, what we can say, that they aged well, and thank to their tried-and-true GM drivetrain underneath, they can still serve for inexpensive regular service for people in tight circumstance.
My grandmother had a 4 door 1988 Oldsmobile that she bought from my great grandfather. It was a very pretty car. I wish she still had it. She sold it back in 1998 and bought a brand-new 1999 Buick Regal LS.
Thanks for the video Kyle. It is appreciated. I have a Toronado. It is a 1992. It was the one after that one when they upsized it and redesigned the car. It was also the last year.
@Greig300 The brake lights are a different bulb than the turn signal/hazards, so people can tell the difference. That's why all cars built after 1986 have a 3rd brake light.
Good thing for me, my grandfather had one and it's been fixed up and now I'm selling my T-Bird to finish the last repairs then I'll have one. Same color and everything.
don't want to be rude but it's very damn clear that oldsmobile died many years ago and if you find parts for a olds trofeo, maybe broken or doesn't fit, better for your mom to say the last goodbye to that car
+vector6977 I would say to hold on to the car. Especially if its in nice shape. I always liked these cars and think they had really neat interiors. I have a 1991 Pontiac Bonneville SSE. Its white with saddle tan leather interior and has the gold package and gold BBS wheels. I absolutely love the car and had it almost 15 years. Those cars are very hard to find parts for as well. But Im not letting it go!!
That car looked pretty nice, despite the wrinkled steering wheel wrap and the missing piece of grille trim below the right headlamp cover. (Yes, it has 163,000 miles; a little wear is to be expected.). The dashboard got my attention; it's like a video game on wheels. And that shifter is kinda slick-looking, too - looks like that seen in earlier Camaros and some late 60s to early 70s Buicks. And that interior is as plush as some living room sofas. One question: what happened to the test drive? That would have been a thriller.
I took my DMV drivers test in my Grandparents 1987 Toronado back in 96. It was the most normal vehicle in my family, everything else was from the 70's.
Same combo (we had leather) my grandfather had and then gave to my dad when he passed. Was supposed to be mine but tranny went at 150k. 1988 had power windows, fuel economy readout, all worked like a charm.

Not bad. Needs gas. The trim under the headlight door on the passenger side is missing, and if I'm not mistaken, the HVAC controls are from a slightly newer model year (the buttons have rounder edges, I had had the same unit in a '93 Riviera). In my 88 Toro, the buttons have sharper corners. I personally like these cars. I know some don't, and that's great for them. But you're hard pressed to find an American car that could be optioned like these. Sunroof, all wheel disc ABS, Bose stereo, built-in phone, and even a touch screen from '89 onward. You could also get inflatable lumbar and bolster support. Cadillac wasn't even doing some of these things at the time. Except maybe for the Eldorado, which is the Toronado's sister car. Same platform, different engine.
