No, with all due respect - and I do know that Jalacy "Screamin' Jay" Hawkins is THE original writer and composer of this masterpiece - but his version is very weird and do not deliver all the beauty and emotions of the song.
@@DonaldLancon he presented it as if it were a fact rather than an opinion so yes his "opinion" doesn't matter, if it was presented as "I personally don't think Jay Hawkins was the best because..." then maybe his "opinion" would hold weight
Screaming Jay Hawkins - its over the top, almost theatrical. Once you've listened to it a few times the other versions seem just so tame. It's also the the way that sax harmonises with the keyboards.
Definitely some good renditions, I have to say Tim Curry has a special place in my heart, I also really love The Screamin' Jay, Nina Simone, CCR, and Bette Middler versions! What a great song;
Screaming Jay Hawkins original is a work of sheer genius in all its voodoo slapstick glory. And Nina Simone's version is haunting an beautiful. But CCR's version is by far the most intense and dark and hypnotizing and powerful and will always be my favorite.
I saw Screaming Jay performing this, he had a flash bomb, in his hand! Health and safety would never allow that these days... There's never been another version of this for me since then. I tried to do his version at a jam once and I passed out in the big finish. Never going to try that again. Screaming Jay, this one's yours!
Wow... I never knew so many people sung the song. I knew only of Nina Simon in 1965 but I never knew the original person of 1956 Screaming Jay Hawkins. That was amazing!
I can't decide which one is better because each one sounds different! Definitely one of the best songs ever written, the greatest proof is that dozens of famous artists from many different music backgrounds have covered it, and each new version adds value to this legend song....
Creedence Clearwater revival is hands down the best. it sounds passionate and romantic at the same time and also catches the vibes of that 60s music. absolutely love it
I thought the original was ok, and sort of fit the idea it was going for. More like a crazed stalker ACTUALLY putting a CURSE on someone, and forcing them to do sick things against their will. I don't personal like seeing it as romantic imo.
@@zionthedragon8866 There's "romantic" and "romantic". People can romanticize things that shouldn't be despite the artist. I think the discomfort might be intended in some of those version. Ask a madman if he's mad, and he'll say no. From his pov (and the song is sung from the first person), he's perfectly sane and justified. That does not prevent us from feeling uncomfortable, and artists play with that. It's a bit like Jacques Brel with "ne me quittes pas" (covered in English as "if you go away"). Loads of people see it as hyper romantic because it's a desperate man listing all the impossible feats he would accomplish for his love not to leave him. The singer said multiple times that it was not his intent. From his point of view, it was a pathetic man, broken and scary because of how human emotion can be destructive, not a love song hero. note that "romantisme", the literary style that arose in France during the 19th century plays a big role in the modern view of "Romantic" things. It was about leaving behind convention and social norms and fears to fully live and express one's inner self and emotions. Death was seen as a freeing experience from the constraint of "broken emotions", a way to bring finality and peace. (Not by self-harm mind you, but the notion of time itself. The concept of passing time. Life itself was seen as the approach of death, from the day you were born, and not something to fear).
Marilyn Manson always makes something very special out of his covers, I really like this. But the best version for me was Creedence Clearwater Revivals’ version but the Sonique one wasn’t bad either, somehow I liked it.
Thnaks for doing this. Brilliant to hear the different versions- from the oriiginal, to the smooth Nina Simone, the fun Bette Midler , the cool Sinique and all of them!
I'm glad I seen ALL the different versions and performances of this song cause it just made me realize that a 9 year old girl has definitely the best cover of it! Angelina Jordan's is hands down IS the best cover of this song! EVERYONE IS AMAZING!
Just shows how a great song attracts talent to put their own spin on it, there are several other intense versions of this song and each of them have special qualities.
Damn, I was so hoping this compilation was going to finish with the total mind f#*kery that is Angelina Jordan’s version of this song - incredible stuff.
I think it's bias for me to say CCR's version is the best but that's because it's the first version I ever heard since the early 70s. It became my fave. CCR song. I never even knew it wasn't their song until about 7 or 8 years ago! I think most of the versions are good but somehow CCR's - with Forgerty's voice and simple straight forward Blues-Rock arrangement just makes it the most catching. Btw, just my opinion.
@@ovekkjlstad7703 The way you said "Nope." like an opinion isn't subjective. lol For some of us, the screaming and being mental fits well the the lyrics which are not tame or romantic at all. It's theatrical in vocal form. Go read the lyrics and think about how unhinged it is.
Released a little late to make it into this video, but one of the best was done by (believe it or not) a 9 year old Angelina Jordan..... ruclips.net/video/nwFloCPXzCs/видео.html The way this little girl from Norway pays homage to the original Screamin Jay is astounding.
Note that the Screamin' Jay Hawkins clip here is from a performance in the 1990s. His live performances in the 1950s (well, '60s, anyway) were a little different. (Not a lot… but a little.)
For many years my favorite version of it was with the Credence Clear Water Rivaibal, but now I love the interpretation of Angelina Jordan, It's more close to the original version but she makes it her own and the execution is amazing, chek her out..
I had CCR's version on the CD compilation my friends created for my birthday when I was 14. I think I maybe heard it there for the first time, and I loved it, it was one of my favorite songs in the whole compilation of hard and soft rock and metal stuff I adored at that time. Maybe I got even bored of it a little, as I played it on repeat so many times. I didn't know it is a cover nor that it's such a popular song with so many versions. Then, I heard Nina Simone's version and was blown away, it sounded so perfect, even better than the perfectly fine rock tune CCR made. I never went back to it anymore, it was always Nina I listened to instead. Then, last year (I think), when I watched videos with interesting facts, I stumbled upon the one which talked about the origins of heavy metal music and the death growl. Screamin' Jay's version (original) was mentioned as the earliest major influence. Then, I was blown away once again. Truly a fascinating tune and how versatile it's used.
I don't care what people say DIAMANDA GALAS version will always be the best she's the greatest singer ever and people are so incapable of understanding her passion So grateful to be alive at a time to be able to experience her art ❤
Amo esta canción. Conocía varias versiones pero no todas estas!!!!! La de Nina Simone es impresionante... pero la de CCR también... bueno... escucharé todas completas.
I think Angelina Jordan's rendition she did when she was 9 is the best, The Black & white version) she redoes it & composes it & still is respectful to the original.
1. Nina Simone 2. Jack Hawkins 3. Creedence Clearwater Revival 4. Tim Curry 5. Bette Midler 6. The Animals 7. Marilyn Manson 8. Annie Lennox 9. Jeff Beck ft Joss Stone 10. Sonique 11. Bryan Ferry 12. The Alan Price Set
Screaming Jay Hawkins, the original is always be the best

CCR's will ALWAYS be THE hands-down best rendition.

Angelina "angel" Jordan version is the best! for the age below 11 years old only. Ps. in the female only.

Screaming Jay Hawkins on Arsenio Hall was great. I don't think the audience was ready for it.
Alan Price's version is hands down the best. He sings it from insecurity, from realising the 'other' is more important in the song than the 'i'.
