- A clip from the LA clinic of Alex Duthart having a bit of fun with showing the fundamental technique of implementing backsticking and then having a bit of fun stick clicking. Alex gives credit to John Bosworth for the backsticking. Ending the clinic with the discussion that we (pipe band drummers) are just one little part of the world drumming scene. Emphasizes how learning the technique can give an advantage when trying to learn other styles and the importance of having the "tools" to get the job done.
A real giant in his field and pioneer. Thanks for sharing this film. I remember attending a drum clinic in London with Alex, Bert Barr and an 18-year-old Jim Kilpatrick. Wonderful! Bob Ash (piper)
a lot of my music teachers spoke highly about Alex Duthart. I used to think he was New Zealand because ive heard so much about him. he has to be one of the greatest drummers in the world. regard, New Zealand Drum Core
Alex did a solo at the ceilidh after the Delco Games in the mid-'80s - amazing. I once read that the great Buddy Rich considered Alex the world's best drummer.
I had the pleasure of being a student of his, around 1980 or '81. He taught a course one summer at Northern College in South Porcupine, Ontario, Canada.
He had very strong hands, I remember! I didn't know at the time that he was a blacksmith!
Me too my name is jason im from huntsville ontario i was up there i got the scholarship and was back the following year but alex had passed away so it wasnt quite the same
Alec was a brilliant and known worldwide for his skills and techniques in drumming. Alec's father taught Alec how to play the drums. His father was bass drummer and served with the 8th bn Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders as bass drummer during world war 1. Alec was my late mother's cousin, her maiden name was also Duthart.
Alex was a great man i learned alot from him at the nothern collage...
Why isn't this man more widely known in drumming circles? I've only just found out about him and he's red hot!
I’ve only seen one other person do the stick clicking although I’m sure lots of drummers do it now. That was back in 1977. I thought the guy, who was visiting our band, was amazing. Our band was a grade 4.
I am desperately looking for a pair of Alex Duthart pipe band sticks, if anyone can help me? It is urgent 😢
