  • "Inside and Out", as Steve notes in his concerts, is the song which didn't make it onto the LP "Wind & Wuthering".
To note, LPs produced for popular music in the '50s, '60s and '70s had a finite amount of (groove) space to cut songs onto a side of vinyl. 20 Minutes per side was about average at the time. Anyone who tried to record an LP onto cassette - and there were MANY of us - can tell you on LP would usually fit onto one side of a 90 minute cassette tape.
Anyone who followed Art Rock in the 70s, and Genesis in particular, know that groups like Genesis pushed the limits of how much information could be cut into a single LP. Genesis' 'Wind & Wuthering' came in at approximately 50 minutes, nearly bucking the 52 minutes that engineers at Columbia had devised in the early 1950s
    (See: en.wikipedia.o...)
It's not clear to me the record was cut with a smaller stylus however the sound on this LP, as well as "A Trick of the Tale" were pressed cleanly with relatively low surface noise.
Alas, three cuts did not make Wind & Wuthering.
    (See: en.wikipedia.o...)
They can still be found on the web in their studio form in various formats.
Here of course is the live version of "Inside and Out" as performed at the NJPAC, February 2017.

Just discovered this - what a beautiful song - such a pity it didn't make it onto an album. Another one that could have been written for Nad - and the musicianship is brilliant - nice to see Nick Beggs on base 😁

It’s a shame that I forgot the ways of Genesis. Listening to it growing and then forgetting about it. However it’s nice that someone filmed this so I can look back at the show that brought back not only my childhood, but also my love for genesis!

He's been playing this one live for a while now that I'm aware of. The song didn't make Wind & Wuthering yet one has to recall in the days of 33 1/3 vinyl, Genesis was one of only a few groups that would pack 50 minutes of music on an LP.

Inside and Out stands out in the genesis catalogue as a rare tribute to other bands : steves solo is obviously paying tribute to the other guitar steve of another big prog band ..and the end is pure Who!

Gorgeous! I'm sure to rile up some haters over this, but....There are some songs on "W&W" that are outright classics, and there are some I could do without. This could have easily replaced Mike's lame "Your Own Stupid Way." on side one. Or, even though I like it a lot, "Wot Gorilla" is just an extended jam of the second-to-last piece of "One For the Vine," "Inside and Out" could have replaced either song to round out side one. It really stood out when I listened to the 3-song EP and would have found a beautiful home on "W&W." Oh well, what Tony says, GOES (apparently)! No wonder Steve left in disgust. Glad to know their animosity has eased over the years but Tony, admittedly, was "a dick" to Steve, and was "a dick" about a lot of other things during this period (1976-1977). However, I agree with the others that "Please Don't Touch" WAS NOT good enough to be included here. "Inside and Out" however, WAS!!!

What a nice forgotten relic to revisit. Vocals are dreadfully off key and show tuney rather than vulnerable, likeable Phil, but great to hear Steve reproduce this live in an otherwise solid performance.

Sounds cold, distant and flat, like everyone is trying to lay back and play quiet. Genesis is about extreme dynamics. I saw steve live a few years ago and it was a great setlist but i felt the same thing as on this footage, no dynamics
