Chris Pappas: Would-be Premier’s message of hope for embattled KZN

- Just as his party is able to use its governance of the Western Cape as a ‘prospectus’ for voters, uMngeni executive mayor Christopher Pappas (32) can point to his own record since taking office in November 2021. And the fluent isiZulu speaker believes it’s a message resonating in a province where there is a growing realisation what you do at the ballot box can make a difference. With support for the ANC collapsing in KZN after the emergence of Jacob Zuma’s MK party, Pappas offers thoughts on the issues which will determine how votes are cast on May 29 - and shares his own message of hope for those in the embattled province. He spoke to Alec Hogg of BizNews.

Chris Pappas is the ideal candidate for change in KZN. Let us back him for change. We all have this power to vote and we will get what we vote for. After 29th May fo not complain. The ANC has disappointed us for 30 years so what is new that they are promising to us South Africans. MK is not the way out. ZUMA HAS CAPTURED THE STATE.

We often visit umngeni. It’s unbelievably clean, compared to the trash that is piled high in most parts of Durban.
People there now know that Pappas is a mover and shaker for rich and poor in his municipality

In KZN there need to be more Whites that can speak isiZulu and know the culture, especially in politics.
It's unlikely that whites would learn an African language.pappas is rare example of a white who understands the culture.the rest of his party can hardly speak any African language

It is hugely disturbing, that a very new political party such as MK, can do zero work and have a zero track record, but the polls show it as the third largest party in SA! This is not a good sign at all. It shows total immaturity in our democratic system, but worst of all, it shows moral bankruptcy in the people of SA! We as citizens of this beautiful country have enough evidence to decide what our responsibilities are towards fixing this collapsing situation we are facing.We need to realize that this is not about individuals and parties but each person to consider how crucial it is to make the right decisions about our privilege to vote and take this seriously.

People make decisions mainly based on culture. He spesks Zulu so he can understand folks in KZN. Hope his support grows across all races in KZN.
Ppl don't make decisions based on culture.if they did ,the inkatha freedom party would be 25 percent of the vote concidering Zulus r 25 percent of the whole population.
Ppl vote for someone they can relate to and pol can feel like he is one of us.ramaphosa come from one of the smallest African tribes in the country but was able to win the election and noone complained about his ethnicity.
Pappas has a major advantage because he speaks the Zulu language fluently and understands the culture.whites usually don't even try to understand or learn the languages spoken by the vast majority of the population.

We rightly decry the surge in MK support. Yet short of some unlikely turn around of majority support for the IFP / DA alliance, all that Pappas can ask for is that every single supporter of both these parties actually go out and vote. If this support base can maximise its power, perhaps it will positively impact the horrors of MK / ANC / EFF support.
