Charlie got burned by hot water in the bathtub when he was little. Ray was blamed. And to keep Charlie safe, their dad placed Ray at the Insitution. That's why it was so emotional for Ray at the hotel by the bathtub.

It was also near the time their mother died. Stanford was dealing with grief and how to raise two sons, one with special needs. Stanford overreacted by not allow Raymond to have a relationship with Charlie and occasionally come home. Perhaps why Charlie turned into an entitled brat and left home.

This is a common misconception in this movie. Charlie *was* *not* burned as a baby. It was actually Raymond who saved Charlie from being burned in a hot bath, but due to his inability to communicate effectively, he couldn't tell their parents what really happened. Because of the misunderstanding, Raymond was institutionalized

The scene when Raymond calls Charlie "main man" and when he leans his head over to touch Charlie's head were improvised by Dustin according to Cruise and it was so moving to him that his reaction was genuine. I love this movie.

I really liked this film as a kid... then having an autistic son of my own made it hit twice as hard for me. Heartbreaking and amusing in equal measures. The scene where Charlie realizes his imaginary friend was actually his long-lost brother never fails to tear me up. At the same time, the "K-Mart boxer shorts scene" where Charlie has to stop the car and just take a moment had me in stitches.

When this movie came out, Autism wasn't as widely known as it is now. My granddaughter has Autism and she is smart as a whip too. She loves to watch videos like Raymond and she remembers EVERYTHING, even in different languages. It's truly amazing!!! She isn't affectionate, but she came to me one day for just a few moments and she had never done that before. That let me know she was comfortable with me. People need to educate themselves a lot more, because there are lots of people who have Autism who are out there in the world with different levels of functionality. Be patient with them, because they are people too.

Most were unfamiliar with Autism when this was made and the diagnosis was just entering public awareness. This movie was HUGELY responsible for the condition being widely understood and appreciated.
Also, one of the most excellent scenes is when Raymond puts his head on Charlie, initiating physical contact when he HATES it because he loves his brother.

Fun fact -- Charlie inherited his father's 1949 Buick Roadmaster, which Raymond described as a "straight-8 - Fireball 8". The Roadmaster was Buick's flagship model from the 1930s and was known for its power, style, and elegance.
Dustin Hoffman got the car after filming was completed. He kept it in a garage for 34 years, and at age 85 he put it up for auction. The auction house put a pre-sale estimate of $150,000 to $250,000 for the Buick while Hagerty estimates a perfect example without the Hollywood connection is worth around $135,000.
Because of the Hollywood connectiion to the car, when the hammer finally came down, the winning bidder ended up paying $335,000, including auction fees.😳 (The car is in detroit raising awareness for Autism at charity events)
BTW...the Lamborghini at the beginning of the movie is a 1978 Lamborghini Countach LP 400 S

Abbot & Costello were a radio comedy team, originally, starting in the 1930's. They instantly became very popular and moved into comedy movies and then in the 1950's, television, although they usually were just rehashing their old radio routines. "Who's on First?" is their most famous bit.

There were three young men who Dustin Hoffman studied to get his character right. One of them is a co-worker of mine. His mom founded the agency I work for and was an advisor on this film. She was a pioneer in the field of autism and equal education for all. The line asking if Raymond was "artistic" came from her real life experiences. Charlie wrote 'autistic' but the nurse had no idea what that was, so she read it as 'artistic'. In her later years this woman said that yes, this movie is now a bit dated regarding its portrayal people with ASD because there are a very limited number of autistic savants out there. But that back then, if your autistic child acted up in a store people would look at you and your child like you were just the worst. After this movie came out, she could say "Have you seen Rain Man? That's what my son has." and their attitudes would immediately soften with a look of understanding and compassion. She said it was literally life-changing.

There was no court. Charlie said "enough" when the Psychiatrist kept hurling questions at Raymond and confusing him. He knew he couldn't care for Raymond as needed, but the break in the routine was good for Raymond too. Great movie. When Rain Man was first released, I read that Dustin Hoffman stayed in character in between shoots.

This movie is great and Dustin Hoffman was amazing. That said, I have never seen a better performance of a person with mental health issues than Leo Dicaprio in 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape'. It is the first thing I ever saw him in, and I walked out of the theater in awe marveling at how well he learned his lines because I thought they must have had to have cast someone who actually was dealing with the same issues. It was a stunning and beautiful portrayal.

I had only seen this movie once when it aired on HBO a few years back. So I had completely forgotten how it ended. Really a great film in showcasing people with special needs. It raises the question of who is actually living better. And there is an intelligence that goes beyond those considered to be normal. There is a woman who lives in our apartment complex. Not sure what her issue is, but it is obvious she is operating on a different level. She's in her 40s. And each time I see her she does wave at me and I wave back. I know enough not to approach her, in that I don't want to disturb her comfort level. Each morning before getting into her car, she'll stand there looking up into the sky for about 15 minutes. As if she is calculating her route. Her car doesn't have a scratch on it, so she seems to handle her travels safely. I don't know if this is autism or it her situation is controlled by a drug to give her clarity. She has people who visit her daily and I am thankful for that. From what I can tell she is a very sweet person and I hope her life continues in ways that is acceptable to her. Thank you for sharing this film♥

    1. Hoffman really did fart in the phonebooth. Being professionals they worked through it in character.
    2. The first indication the change in Charlie beginning to change to me is the farm porch scene.
    3. The casino would have swapped out the dealer before taking the step of kicking them out.
    4. The hooker was just working and it's doubtful she turned them in.
    5. I suspect Charlie has a bit of his "piece of work" father has just as Raymond got the
    completely different personalities. (mentally/emotionally)
    6. Top 5-character development movie. Perhaps Charlie won't be so self-centered and toxic now.🤩

It's one of those films where the characters have to learn things sometimes the hard way and that you care for a sibling who is different than you. Family is family. Please check out Dick Tracy (1990) with a stellar cast: Warren Beatty, Madonna, Al Pacino, Mandy Patinkin, Dick Van Dyke, William Forsythe, Charles Durning, and Seymour Cassel. He is something referred to as an idiot savant, not just autistic as everyone insists. The genius with numbers AND memory is where the savant comes in. It's a term for someone who lacks basic mental capacity for their chronological age but with CERTAIN THINGS they're exceptionally gifted.

Great reaction 😊❤ raymond had what used to be called Aspergers. It is now under the autism umbrella. I am level 1 autistic, but nowhere near as severe as raymond. I do have slight sensory issues but its nothing i cant work thru. I struggle terribly with math but am really super smart when it comes to music and classic cars. No two autistics are exactly alike. Autism is a specrum with different levels. We do absolutely feel emotions. I did some research and found out that one of my favorite actors Dan Aykroyd is autistic. Also autism is something that autistic folks are born with. There is no cure.

When Charlie turned the bathtub water on and Raymond went nuts is because Raymond watched Charlie as a baby and put him in a tub full of hot water and it burned Charlie. That’s why the Father put Raymond in a home.

    • @boomeister2
      @boomeister2 20 дней назад

That is incorrect and it is a common misconception in this movie. Charlie *was* *not* burned as a baby. It was actually Raymond who saved Charlie from being burned in a hot bath, but due to his inability to communicate effectively, he couldn't tell their parents what really happened. Because of the misunderstanding, Raymond was institutionalized

Both Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman deserved the Oscar. My son was Autistic. He was great with numbers. He loved to draw maps. My son was a lot more independent than Rain Man, but he still exhibited some of the typical behaviors. More children have autism. I don't know why, but this movie may have helped to give some people an understanding of what autistic people are capable of. Great movie.

You guys might remember the scene in "The Hangover" when they needed to get Chow''s money back - they went to the casino because Alan learned the gambling book. Alan was dressed in the grey jacket w the white shirt and his hair combed down. It was an ode to this movie.
If you want to see more movies where an A list actor plays a character with mental challenges, I think you guys would love "A Beautiful Mind" starring Russell Crowe.

    Hi my sweeties...
The interesting thing about this movie is the father had 2 children that were self absorbed..one through limitations and one due to choice...yes Charlie was easier to see changes in but Raymond had a few new interactions/contact with others..outside of himself...as you said Raymond will now have stories of his time with Charlie and that's wonderful...
    Many blessings Asia and BJ...

You know... you can find a video of the guy this character is based upon. He's got autism and is considered an (horrible phrase) idiot savant (savant is the correct term now). He's incredible. He did auditorium lectures with his father across the country after this movie came out because he really is like that. Phone books, facts, numbers, card counting, etc.

    DUSTIN HOFFMAN comment below:
I've been trying to tell you about some older classic movies that you won't get in any of your polls, because they are more than 50 years old. These 5 movies are in my top 10. I know you will love them as much as audiences did when they were released.
Dr. Strangelove - Stanley Kubrick directs Peter Sellers (in three roles), George C. Scott, James Earl Jones, and Slim Pickens
The Man Who Would Be King - John Huston directed Sean Connery and Michael Caine in this Rudyard Kipling story
Little Big Man - A young Dustin Hoffman is caught between worlds in the old West. Also starring Faye Dunaway.
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest - Best Picture, Actor, and Actress for Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher. Best Director Milos Foreman, and Best Writing. Only the second picture to win all five.
Jeremiah Johnson - Directed by Sydney Pollack - a young Robert Redford wants to be a Mountain Man.

Also in Cuckoo's Nest are Christopher Lloyd, Danny DeVito, and Scatman Crothers.
Which reminds me of another movie with these same actors:
Goin' South - old West romcom with Jack Nicholson, Mary Steenburgen, Christopher Lloyd, Danny DeVito, and even John Belushi. Very funny.

Some severely autistic people are known as savants, since they can do one thing brilliantly. It might be playing music, quickly adding large numbers, etc. That said, the autism experts said at the time that the memorizing of phone numbers isn't that common.

Charlie still has a way to go to get his life together. It's commendable that Charlie had the emotional growth, but he still is not in a place where he can effectively take care of Raymond. It will take some time before the institute can consider allowing Charlie to get visitation or to take Raymond away from the facility for short periods of time.
One of the reasons that Raymond is institutionalized is because the mother had died, and Raymond required round the clock supervision. The father, believe, made the best decision considering there was still a toddler at home. Raymond requires professional care.
Another reason Charlie could not be given guardianship is because of the poor decision-making while on the road and the chain of events in Las Vegas. He was growing fond of Raymond but he still took advantage of Raymond at the casino. Charlie also left Raymond alone where unscrupulous people would take advantage of him. Raymond is not socially adept in taking care of himself in these situations.

  • @Xfactor444-x4n
    @Xfactor444-x4n 19 дней назад +1

They didn't THINK Raymond would hurt Charlie. He actually DID hurt Charlie. He burned him with hot water and yes that is why they took him to the institution. Raymond needed not help and supervision then his father could give especially with a baby at home.
