I finally got my wings exhaust with the silent kit, I couldn't be happier, went straight from the stock to wings with the silent kit, since I already knew what I wanted , thanks to this video, can't tell the difference in volume, but the tone is way more pleasant, and the bike feels way less restricted, thanks for sharing this video, Now wings gives you the option of the silent kit right when you are ready to place your order. I changed mine today. Had a hell of a time getting the original out but was finally successful. I found the original Wings set up a tad loud especially when rolling into campgrounds here in the USA. I could hear a difference with the silencer kit but it was far from dramatic. I'm happy with the results. It still has a nice rumble to to it. Great video. Thanks for posting.

Love it. Thanks for the shout out Codger... They are some interesting db figures. Only a tiny bit louder than stock is a huge win especially on the trails... Went for a spin today on the GF's 690 Duke WITH decat and akra WITH db killer and it's so very loud BUT, it's exhilarating and exciting. After I got back I thought i'd try it with the decat and stock pipe to see if it was any more sociable. Surprisingly it was louder and sharper than the Akrapovic. Might try and fashion a cone for her Akra.... On one hand there's the fun of twisty roads with a loud pipe but on the other there's that need for a more tolerable tone. This Wings setup might be the answer. I don't suppose you tried the 'quiet kit' db killer without the cone and with the cone but without the db killer?? Could be a little interesting experiment.

Thanks for your channel I love it. I was also very moved by your offroad vlog, I hope more people watch it.
I think we must be the only two 690 riders in the world trying to make them quieter. I did think about experimenting with variations. But it is bloody freezing up here, and raining all the time. I’d have to have spent the day revving the hell out of it which would have pleased people 🤣 So, I reckon, it’s about -2db for the cone and -2db for the spark arrester DB Killer. I did suspect the Cat might double as a Db Killer in the OEM so you have confirmed that. Shame it gets so hot. I wouldn’t mind a header cat, Tekmo could install one in that power bulge. Anyhow using those figures you can kinda work out, approx, how loud it would be. And as I wanted it quiet (for now) I thought it best to put Gorazd’s work to the test. I’ll follow up in future vlogs. Might feel a loss of power. But a lot of that, I always think, is the glorious noise as you blast up the road with everyone looking - I love it 😻 . But have to keep in with the neighbours, as well as local police. Got stopped a bit back for a number plate check. So I abandoned tail tidy idea, luckily I wasn’t revving the hell out of it 🤣😂 Keep up the great channel 👍👍👍👍👍

Great video. Many thanks for sharing. I have a 2021 690 Enduro and like the quiet aspect of the OEM pipe, but I want to change it something less hot, lighter weight better looking, nicer tone, plus removal of the CAT. Your solution is very interesting and sounds awesome. Wings in Australia offer a 28 mm db killer with a curved metal spark arrestor (see pic on website), so I might try that first, then add a sound filter later if required. Cheers

I, like you, came to the conclusion that many aftermarket silencers are just too noisy.
But, I installed a titanium Wings slip-on this weekend with the silent kit option and I love it. It has a fruitier tone than the OEM silencer but remains the right side of antisocial on dB and with no cat it runs way cooler than stock too.
    Win - win.

    Hey, thanks for the video.
I have this experience with Silent Kit:
    - with both the cone and the spark arrestor db killer installed the sound was even more silent than the factory stock exhaust and I did not liked it.
    - I have contacted Wings and asked if the spark arrestor db killer could be used without the cone and they confirmed there are no issues with that setup
    - so now I have just the db killer from the Silent Kit installed, exhaust is still quiet (almost as the factory pipe), but the sound is much nicer, more bass, more character.
I would recommend to give it a try. If you (and your neighborhood) won't like it, you can always put the cone back.
    Cheers!

Interesting video as I'm considering getting the same bike, but I think you got the dB scale a bit wrong. A change of 3 dB in sound pressure is perceived by a human ear as a really small change in sound "volume". A change of 10 dB is perceived as double (or half) the "volume".

    • @CodgerBiker
      @CodgerBiker  2 года назад

10db is 10x the sound energy, though your perception may differ 👍 In any event, nit picking aside, it is a nice compromise v OEM can or Wings as standard.

In reality, the stock exhaust works fine on a 690. The internet howls about the heat, in real life its not any kind of big deal. All mufflers are hot dont touch them.
The latest price I saw on a wings muffler for 690 was over 600.00 US. ! A muffler.
I put one on my 890R, so cool. runs the same, makes the same amount of noise. 2 lbs lighter on a 470 lb bike. My 2021 690 enduro runs just fine with stock muffler, even sounds good.

Coming from a 790Adv S with fixed suspension I’ve found this better. I know what you mean though. I set mine to comfort all round and it is better. I’m about the target weight I suspect. I suppose, as an off road focussed bike, it’s never going to match a tourer. 👍

It’s strange though my KTM 500 EXE is less Jolty. I contacted a few suspension specialists and they feel they are making the suspension to a price not a quality. This will be my third 690 after a break for a few years, I can’t say that the WP explorer suspension is much better than the apex. Hello Codger, I agree with you conclusions about neighbors and the whole environment you ride through with your bike but we are bikers and we want rumble coming out of the exhaust. Each and one us have our own surroundings to take care of. In my case I ride in Sweden and were I live I have miles and miles of gravel roads in forests and in an agricultural landscape open for me to ride on. But along the ways there are people living their daily social life with children, cats and dogs, and of course cows and horses and all other wild animals like mooses, deer, etc. I want more sound for the feeling of riding a bike but also for my own safety and for them who I meet along the way.
My choice is to be loud and clear and heard in a distance and when I passes places where people live the revs is down to a minimum and for this I need a more open flow on the exhaust than a stock can provide but not so loud so they can hear me a mile before I reach them and a mile after I have passed. I´m searching for this compromise.
Keeping the subject but leaving the 690...
Recently I´ve upgraded where you downsized, i bought the new Ktm 1290 SAR after had having a 790 adv r since 2019 with an debaffled Akra.
The new Euro-5 Akra exhaust for the 1290 has a whole different approach to keeping the sound low even if you take out the baffles. First you have a big cat on the mid pipe sticking in to the muffler about 10 cm, then there is a "wall" separating the lower part from the rest only connecting to the upper part via two internal "db-killers"(15mm/10 cm each)these inner pipes almost meets the traditional baffles(25/27 cm long)in the upper part of the muffler, a sort of sound chamber. So when you take out the outer long baffles you get a deep sonor sound and not signifikant louder than with the baffles in, just less sharp/metallic. They have in a sort of way secured a relatively low sound even if you modify the baffles. Previous on my 790 and 1190 r with a Remus Hexacone there was an considerably differens between baffles in and baffles out./Staffan

@@CodgerBiker sorry Codger, My entusiasm carried me away, but I think it is a crucial question. We love the sound of a perfect tuned exhaust but we have to hold on to some principals. Some Harley-owners(not all...) in My environment probably think, the louder the better and I don't agree.

Of course to each their own when choosing how loud your exhaust is. I’ve been riding many bikes daily over the past 45 yrs. I broke 1 million miles about a yr ago. Tinnitus from bikes, loud music, shooting etc never stops
It’s 24x7 including when you want to sleep. I wear earplugs every time I get on a bike. I had my share of loud pipes over the yrs and now do everything I can to protect my hearing. I just ordered the silent kit for my 701. Hearing damage is cumulative and irreparable. You get one set of ears and don’t realize the damage that occurs until it’s too late. Nice video and thanks.
