  • Royal botanical garden peradeniya,situated about 4km away from kandy town,central province in Sri lanka. This is the oldest among sri lanka's botanical gardens has a history dating back to year 1821.
    History of this place goes back to the gampola era. Year 1371, when king wickramabahu 3 ascended the throne and kept court at peradeniya near the mahaweli river. A temple was built on this place by king wimaladharmasuriya , but it was destroyed by the british when they were given control over the kingdom of kandy. The historical records indicate that the gardens were a royal residence and park during the time of king keerthi sri rajasinghe, and this was followed by king Rajadhi rajasinghe.
    There after the groundwork for a botanical garden was formed by Alexander moon in 1821.
    The garden cover an area about 147 acres. It's elevation above sea level is 1600ft.
