This is all because you have a big heart! I think what happened is when you did the live chat last week people me included did superchats. I don’t think you expected it, being the kind hearted people you are. You wanted to give back and I think it was misunderstood. People gave $ to you via super chats for whatever reason. Speaking for myself your videos have brought me joy, knowledge and inspiration so I merely wanted to show my appreciation! I also contributed to project Dove and I loved being a part of that. I suggest you do that in the new year. Find a project tell us about it and those that want to participate can. I LOVED the live chat. My husband and I married in 1995 and we wanted a real tree for our first Christmas. As we were taking it down to discard it we found a tiny pinecone nestled in one of the branches. That pinecone has been on our tree every year since. I attached a piece of wire to make a loop and added a tiny gold ribbon flower. It is tradition. And I get sentimental every single year as my husband hangs it front and center near the top of the tree. I think nostalgia is what Christmas is all about. Keep your angel. She looks beautiful sitting at the top of that tree!
🌿I don’t really understand how some people can complain about an ad or two coming on while watching you show/teach/give of YOUR time & talents (completely free I might add)! RUclips is basically your job....you spend HOURS producing content (again-for FREE)...& to get even one person complaining about 15-30 seconds of an ad (in exchange for your experience) seems crazy! And then...for some to speak negatively concerning how you should grow YOUR channel?!? Channel “memberships” are the way things are going on RUclips...Having memberships (like “investors” in a way) gives a channel more flexibility & the ability to grow more (thus giving a bit more value to those viewers/investors)... It’s like a travel group going to Disneyland...when people pay for their trip & the event coordinator goes for free (due to all the work that “Disney” experience required). To imagine some people basically complaining because they “can’t go” is unbelievable! You were going to produce MORE content...not take ANYTHING away from non-members. It’s just crazy!🌿
I missed the original video but I totally agree with you. Some people you can't make happy no matter what you do, so you may as well just do what you want. The fact is she is the original youtube gardening superstar, and for good reason.

They make light adjusters specifically for Christmas trees. You plug it into the base of the tree and then plug into the wall. They usually have different settings like low, medium, bright, slow dim, fast flashing, etc. my mom has one and the grandkids love touching the button to switch the pattern

My thoughts would be to announce your projects that you want to pay forward and let people donate towards that specific project (s). That way, you get the donations for projects that you want to promote and people can join in with you and be a part of paying it forward. I would rather donate when a project(s) touches my heart. You never mentioned how often you would doing this kind of project but it is a great idea. If this is on your hearts to do anyway, let us have the opportunity to join you in helping others. I think that is an absolutely great idea I personally have recently done a trade show at a school and I saw that they have a small gardening area so this Spring I am going to be donating them a gift card to our local garden center so the kids can get out there and do some gardening 🌿🌸🌿
I live in Utah and popped into Trader Joe's this evening and was blown away by all the women buying seeded eucalyptus, winter berries, etc. so ventured a question, "Do you watch Laura?" YES! was the answer from several. Just made me smile that Garden Answer and you are so loved ♥
Well i think it would be so special if you guys could seranade us for a holiday special. Anything would do...but my old childhood piano teacher and her husband called me one year and played me Silver Bells for there Christmas gift to our family. It was such a beautiful thing and i remember it every year and have to find that song to play every year for the holidays. But just seeing you play and be part of that, would be sweet!

Thanks for the clarification. I think some of us thought that your regular free content on YT would no longer be available to us if we were not "members". As I now understand it, if we choose to be members, we would have access to even more content than we do now (when do you two find time to sleep??). The idea has merit -- people who can afford paying $5.00/month would see their contribution doing some good in the world. Laura, when you were tidying your loft at the end of your gardening season I was hoping to see how you clean and store your tools for the winter. Do you sharpen your own pruners and blades? How do you prevent rust from forming over the winter on shovels and trowels? Do you clean your hay rack liners? What about pots you might reuse? Wash and disinfect? Best way to store power tools and their batteries? Would love a video on cleaning and storing garden tools so everything is ready for spring. Merry Christmas!
Search RUclips for "Garden Answer how to clean & sharpen your garden tools" for a video they've already done. If you wipe them with oil and keep them out of the elements, they'll be ready for you when planting season starts up again.
I think the idea sounds wonderful...a lot of you tube content creators do Patreon, or memberships, and don't donate the proceeds to charity. So, I would be in favor of your original pitch because your channel is such a high level of production, and you, Laura, are earnest in your projects. We the viewers don't pay anything for this, and to complain when the creator has an idea to be charitable with monies voluntarily collected, is selfish. Keep up the great work, Laura.
I love saving up all your videos throughout the week, so I can watch them all while I lounge on Saturday mornings. But the recap videos, I just can't help myself. I click every time. Love these videos. Such a lovely idea. Next year will be my first full season of gardening, I got intoit late last spring/early summer. Ive learned sooo much from you guys. I LOVE the brand new pots and flowers idea OR creating wreaths to give away. I love the idea of releasing the videos to the members first AND then to the 'general public' later (72 hours later) I am also a fan of you keeping the $$. It does take a lot to make these videos and I think of this $5/month as a fee for all of the information you give to us. Suggestion: Would you consider using the $$ to do LIVE Garden Answer videos during the spring/summer when you are planting a flowerbed or creating a new bed or pruning or spring clean up? Would you consider using the $$ to do a LIVE Garden Answer video Garden Tour? Just one/year; possibly in July or when you think we would see your garden at it's most bloomiful (It's a new word. I don’t have the bandwidth to donate to all the channels I love (my hubby raises his eyebrows every month that I actually pay for RUclips upgrade to no commercials). But, what’s the harm in others supporting a “giving / outreach” branch to your channel? As a fundraiser, I’ve seen this branch of “exclusivity” to patrons all the time. ALL THE TIME. In fact, from a non-paying viewer, THANK YOU to the patrons that actually help fund some of the great projects Laura and Aaron do, and then let us see (for free).

Do you ever get to sit back and enjoy your garden, it seems like you are constantly working? That question was interesting to me. For me, garden work IS enjoyable. I remember the first house we ever moved in to, I was so excited to have a yard, and get to plant plants. I've been in my current home 25 years, and I so enjoy mowing, weeding, pruning and planting. I'm grateful for my own dirt. We all talk about how winter forces us to rest.....otherwise, we wouldn't, would we? I loved the question. I think the only time I REALLY enjoy my own garden, is when I'm sharing it with a friend. When people tell me something they particularly like, or take a cutting....that's heaven to me. But to go outside, and just sit? LOL. I'm not sure I could. I'd be looking around the entire time, looking for something that needed done. I think I'm going to keep that question in the back of my mind, and look for ways to "just sit back and enjoy it". Maybe garden parties will become "a thing" again. 😃🍷.

My artificial tree was too bright at first, but we bought a tabletop dimmer switch - very cheap... That way during the day, it can be super bright, but in the evening, it is so much prettier when it's toned down!

I don't think it was a bad idea. It is like being a patron. The artists I support on Patreon still put out videos but the Patreon supporters get a little extra content for saying thanks for supporting.

Just to mention a few I follow include SciShow, PBS Eons, The Try Guys, and The Piano Guys. These supporters in-turn get perks for their patronage.

There was never going to be a membership fee, no worries. The fee was voluntary, if you wanted to donate to the monthly charity project. Those who donated would see the video first, but everyone one else would see it eventually, maybe the day after. Nothing else would change.

Great video! Even second time around. Lol. No worries about your idea. You were trying to find another way of giving so your intentions were good. I don’t do that on anyone I follow on You Tube so I probably wouldn’t have joined this one either had you done it. Plus being a Canadian our low dollar value makes everything in US $ 30% more. Loved watching your cleaning of the loft again as I have a similar project this winter for my entire house, or so it seems. Now if I could just get 2 other people to help me, it would be a lot more fun. Your videos are always inspiring, fun and enjoyable. I know they are tons of work so thank you for keeping them coming out so frequently.
I've made orange and clove pomanders for years. They keep beautifully and the cloves act as wicks to pull the orange fragrance to the surface. I love to see them hiding in my china cups in the cupboard during the year. For straight lines, I have used 1/4" masking tape that I use for hand quilting straight lines. A roll of it lasts a long time. I think JoAnns carries it. And for stubborn holes, I use a sharp nail to make a hole in the rind. 🍊
My girls and I were excited to see the groupie message about ornaments. We’re planning to make a few for y’all but I’m afraid they won’t arrive before you film this week! To Patricia Doyle: a few weeks ago I finally ordered a bag of composting worms from Uncle Jim's Worm Farm and was so pleased with the quality of the product. I ordered 1000 worms and wish I had ordered more. The worms quickly worked their way into the mulch in my beds and are probably already helping to mix the mulch into the soil.

So glad to hear that I'm not the only person with an aversion to the dried pods. There is also a plant down the road from my home that is about 5 feet tall green leaves, red stems and purple or black large berries. The people who own the land have a huge area of these and I find them very unsettling. Maybe I'm not as crazy as I thought. Haha. I actually Googled it and it's Pokeweed. Ewwww
Learn something new everyday. I had no idea that lotus pods would be triggering to some people as a pattern phobia. I have known a few people who see lotus pods and it makes them think of things like beehives, wasp nests, or the frogs that carry eggs on their bags. That can weird out some people. I love all the crazy, weird things in nature, so it doesn't bother me at all. I actually really love lotus pods because it reminds me of home. The lake near my childhood home would bloom in summer with American lotus.

I know you go to some pretty big ones with PW but in smaller states like here in Arkansas we don’t get big booths from national companies that would bring you. I didn’t think it was a bad idea. Most channels have special perks for their members or Patreons. I loved that you were planning on doing a charity project with your membership money and that you would eventually release that early content to your channel. Other channels do not release the extra content. I thought you were being incredibly generous.
I don't see anything wrong with it either. Plus I agree with you that they were being generous with the idea of eventually releasing the early video content for members to the rest of the viewers, not all channels do that. If you don't want to be a member just don't become a member, no big deal. I could see how they may get more money for projects by announcing them ahead of time and having people who feel like it donate one time instead of on a monthly basis. People will always disagree on subjects like these. I believe they should just do whatever they want, it's their channel, it's good to get feedback but ultimately it's up to them.

It truly amazes me that they receive free content then would chastise you for something they do not have to participate in. I do think it is important to look for some large perk members get. I love your channel and the only real reason I haven't become a member is that I haven't really heard any huge perks. Maybe when you do Q&A's try and answer mostly member questions, or if members have specific questions about their garden you can focus on replying to those questions in the comments, or reply to all member comments. I know that's a lot of ors lol.

This is all because you have a big heart! I think what happened is when you did the live chat last week people me included did superchats. I don’t think you expected it, being the kind hearted people you are. You wanted to give back and I think it was misunderstood. People gave $ to you via super chats for whatever reason. My husband and I married in 1995 and we wanted a real tree for our first Christmas. As we were taking it down to discard it we found a tiny pinecone nestled in one of the branches. That pinecone has been on our tree every year since. I attached a piece of wire to make a loop and added a tiny gold ribbon flower. It is tradition. And I get sentimental every single year as my husband hangs it front and center near the top of the tree. I think nostalgia is what Christmas is all about. Keep your angel. She looks beautiful sitting at the top of that tree!
🌿I don’t really understand how some people can complain about an ad or two coming on while watching you show/teach/give of YOUR time & talents (completely free I might add)! RUclips is basically your job....you spend HOURS producing content (again-for FREE)...& to get even one person complaining about 15-30 seconds of an ad (in exchange for your experience) seems crazy!

Channel “memberships” are the way things are going on RUclips...Having memberships (like “investors” in a way) gives a channel more flexibility & the ability to grow more (thus giving a bit more value to those viewers/investors)...
It’s like a travel group going to Disneyland...when people pay for their trip & the event coordinator goes for free (due to all the work that “Disney” experience required). To imagine some people basically complaining because they “can’t go” is unbelievable!

They make light adjusters specifically for Christmas trees. You plug it into the base of the tree and then plug into the wall. They usually have different settings like low, medium, bright, slow dim, fast flashing, etc. my mom has one and the grandkids love touching the button to switch the pattern

My thoughts would be to announce your projects that you want to pay forward and let people donate towards that specific project (s). That way, you get the donations for projects that you want to promote and people can join in with you and be a part of paying it forward. I would rather donate when a project(s) touches my heart. I think that is an absolutely great idea I personally have recently done a trade show at a school and I saw that they have a small gardening area so this Spring I am going to be donating them a gift card to our local garden center so the kids can get out there and do some gardening

Anything would do...but my old childhood piano teacher and her husband called me one year and played me Silver Bells for there Christmas gift to our family. Thanks for the clarification. I think some of us thought that your regular free content on YT would no longer be available to us if we were not "members". As I now understand it, if we choose to be members, we would have access to even more content than we do now (when do you two find time to sleep??). The idea has merit -- people who can afford paying $5.00/month would see their contribution doing some good in the world. Laura, when you were tidying your loft at the end of your gardening season I was hoping to see how you clean and store your tools for the winter. Do you sharpen your own pruners and blades? How do you prevent rust from forming over the winter on shovels and trowels? Do you clean your hay rack liners? What about pots you might reuse? Wash and disinfect? Best way to store power tools and their batteries? Would love a video on cleaning and storing garden tools so everything is ready for spring. Merry Christmas!

I think the idea sounds wonderful...a lot of you tube content creators do Patreon, or memberships, and don't donate the proceeds to charity. So, I would be in favor of your original pitch because your channel is such a high level of production, and you, Laura, are earnest in your projects. We the viewers don't pay anything for this, and to complain when the creator has an idea to be charitable with monies voluntarily collected, is selfish. Keep up the great work, Laura.

Suggestion: Would you consider using the $$ to do LIVE Garden Answer videos during the spring/summer when you are planting a flowerbed or creating a new bed or pruning or spring clean up?

I don’t have the bandwidth to donate to all the channels I love (my hubby raises his eyebrows every month that I actually pay for RUclips upgrade to no commercials). But, what’s the harm in others supporting a “giving / outreach” branch to your channel? As a fundraiser, I’ve seen this branch of “exclusivity” to patrons all the time. ALL THE TIME. In fact, from a non-paying viewer, THANK YOU to the patrons that actually help fund some of the great projects Laura and Aaron do, and then let us see (for free).

Do you ever get to sit back and enjoy your garden, it seems like you are constantly working? That question was interesting to me. For me, garden work IS enjoyable. I remember the first house we ever moved in to, I was so excited to have a yard, and get to plant plants. I've been in my current home 25 years, and I so enjoy mowing, weeding, pruning and planting. I'm grateful for my own dirt. We all talk about how winter forces us to rest.....otherwise, we wouldn't, would we? I loved the question. I think the only time I REALLY enjoy my own garden, is when I'm sharing it with a friend. When people tell me something they particularly like, or take a cutting....that's heaven to me. But to go outside, and just sit? LOL. I'm not sure I could. I'd be looking around the entire time, looking for something that needed done. I think I'm going to keep that question in the back of my mind, and look for ways to "just sit back and enjoy it". Maybe garden parties will become "a thing" again. 😃🍷.

My artificial tree was too bright at first, but we bought a tabletop dimmer switch - very cheap... That way during the day, it can be super bright, but in the evening, it is so much prettier when it's toned down!

I don't think it was a bad idea. It is like being a patron. The artists I support on Patreon still put out videos but the Patreon supporters get a little extra content for saying thanks for supporting.
Patreon is for channels that produce good content but aren't getting recognition. This channel is making tons of money, therefore does not need it.

Just to mention a few I follow include SciShow, PBS Eons, The Try Guys, and The Piano Guys. These supporters in-turn get perks for their patronage.

There was never going to be a membership fee, no worries. The fee was voluntary, if you wanted to donate to the monthly charity project. Those who donated would see the video first, but everyone one else would see it eventually, maybe the day after. Nothing else would change.

Loved watching your cleaning of the loft again as I have a similar project this winter for my entire house, or so it seems. Now if I could just get 2 other people to help me, it would be a lot more fun.

I've made orange and clove pomanders for years. They keep beautifully and the cloves act as wicks to pull the orange fragrance to the surface. I love to see them hiding in my china cups in the cupboard during the year. For straight lines, I have used 1/4" masking tape that I use for hand quilting straight lines. A roll of it lasts a long time. I think JoAnns carries it. And for stubborn holes, I use a sharp nail to make a hole in the rind. 🍊
My girls and I were excited to see the groupie message about ornaments. We’re planning to make a few for y’all but I’m afraid they won’t arrive before you film this week! We’ve been battling strep and RSV so we haven’t gotten in crafting time. We love your channel and are happy with which ever way you decide to go with the membership idea!!

To Patricia Doyle: a few weeks ago I finally ordered a bag of composting worms from Uncle Jim's Worm Farm and was so pleased with the quality of the product. I ordered 1000 worms and wish I had ordered more. The worms quickly worked their way into the mulch in my beds and are probably already helping to mix the mulch into the soil.

So glad to hear that I'm not the only person with an aversion to the dried pods. There is also a plant down the road from my home that is about 5 feet tall green leaves, red stems and purple or black large berries. The people who own the land have a huge area of these and I find them very unsettling. Maybe I'm not as crazy as I thought. Haha. I actually Googled it and it's Pokeweed. Ewwww

Learn something new everyday. I had no idea that lotus pods would be triggering to some people as a pattern phobia. I have known a few people who see lotus pods and it makes them think of things like beehives, wasp nests, or the frogs that carry eggs on their bags. That can weird out some people. I love all the crazy, weird things in nature, so it doesn't bother me at all. I actually really love lotus pods because it reminds me of home. The lake near my childhood home would bloom in summer with American lotus.

Hi Laura and Aaron I think it would be awesome if you guys used the membership money to pay for you guys to travel to Flower & Garden shows around the country. I know you go to some pretty big ones with PW but in smaller states like here in Arkansas we don’t get big booths from national companies that would bring you. How awesome would it be to have a meet and greet at the garden shows around the country and meet more of your fans! 😄🙏🏻

I didn’t think it was a bad idea. Most channels have special perks for their members or Patreons. I loved that you were planning on doing a charity project with your membership money and that you would eventually release that early content to your channel. Other channels do not release the extra content. I thought you were being incredibly generous.
I don't see anything wrong with it either. Plus I agree with you that they were being generous with the idea of eventually releasing the early video content for members to the rest of the viewers, not all channels do that. If you don't want to be a member just don't become a member, no big deal. I could see how they may get more money for projects by announcing them ahead of time and having people who feel like it donate one time instead of on a monthly basis. People will always disagree on subjects like these. I believe they should just do whatever they want, it's their channel, it's good to get feedback but ultimately it's up to them.
Tuck the angel topper into the tree as more of an ornament and use bows at the top.

I do think it is important to look for some large perk members get. I love your channel and the only real reason I haven't become a member is that I haven't really heard any huge perks. Maybe when you do Q&A's try and answer mostly member questions, or if members have specific questions about their garden you can focus on replying to those questions in the comments, or reply to all member comments. I know that's a lot of ors lol.
