I’m bored so here’s an analysis of the song “Bruno is orange.” (Warning; the lyrics might not be exact accurate.)
The song starts off with the lyrics: “Bruno, what did you tell that man?” ‘That man’ refers to her husband. It appears Bruno (maybe her brother) says something to her husband that had upset him or put doubt in his mind. It’ll make sense in a few minutes. “He’s a clever man, did you know? I bet he works for the government.” The song talks about how she believes he works for the government, perhaps a soldier man. “And I know, you know, I know, I can’t control thoughts of things I need. And I believe everybody needs some encouragement.” She’s talking about how she loves him to the point of needing him to be happy and live. This is important. She also describes ‘encouragement’ on her relationship. She wants her (possibly) brother/close relative, Bruno’s support for her relationship with this government man. “I think it’s real unfair that you should put him there.” Is about how they are putting her husband in an awkward and uncomfortable position by being unsupportive about their relationship and trying to convince her to leave him. “All we did was kiss, on my grave, I swear.” She’s swearing that the relationship is probably not even serious. She’s trying to brush it off as something that might be temporary. But later in the song, the situation is described to become more serious and less of a temporary thing. “Where did you find his shoes? A lock of my hair?” This is referring to their hidden secrets, the shoes and hair representing valuable information. This probably means their relationship is secret to nearly everyone in her family. Some people, like her mother and her brother (Bruno) are aware. “Some dull morning, we were wearing sheets. And he whispered, ‘I think that they know better than me.’” Is about how her husband thinks that he’s in the wrong. Their relationship is crumbling and falling apart due to the lack of support from the girl’s family. “See this hand, that pushed you into the creek? Sorry, was just fun, and you were laughing.” I believe this is a metaphorical statement which states that they (Bruno and the girl) have been at odds before, but it was all just in fun and jokes. This most likely means that they aren’t talking to each other anymore. They are upset with each other. “We were running towards the street. And I wrote my name into the freshly, painted yellow line, and you wrote your name. Right there, next to mine. We had to dodge a truck. We almost hit a bug, I think we had some luck. And for two bucks, we bought some bread and fed the grey geese and the ducks.” This is basically recalling their memories. When they got along well in their childhood, further confirming that this might be someone close to her. “Everyone will come, everyone will yell. I’d thank you just the same if you didn’t tell. My mother says that I will surely go to hell. Please be a good man, please say you won’t tell.” We can infer that she’s talking about her family getting angry and arguing over her relationship with this man, (who is possibly untrustworthy or older than her by a large amount.) so she might have lied to them about breaking up with him and cutting off her contact with him. Her mother disagrees with this relationship too, saying that if she dates/marries this man, she will go to hell. Bruno must have found out that she’s still with this man, and is threatening to tell the rest of her family about this. He’s just doing what seems okay in his eyes, unknowingly destroying her life and shattering her heart. “Did you know, that boy is an armed man?” She’s talking about his job yet again, he’s an army man. “Bearing flowers into hands.” She’s justifying her love for him, explaining that he’s a peaceful and caring man. The flowers are given to her by him, showing that he loves her dearly. “Very able to hold me down, and love me more than anyone.” Once again, she’s telling Bruno about how this man has melted her heart and ‘held her down’. (Meaning; kept her by his side with ease.) She knows this man loves her with his life and will protect her. “Bruno, what happened to your good sense?!” Is her getting somewhat emotional and angry with Bruno. “I broke down, that man’s good.” Unable to contain her feelings, the girl has broke down, (possibly into tears) frustrated that her brother and mother won’t accept her. She’s emphasizing how she believes this man is kind and good for her, stating him to be ‘good’. “I bet he works for the government.” Once again, she is talking about his job and age being the barrier between them. “Did you hear about that, mother? Broke her daughter’s legs in two, and said; ‘It’s too dangerous out there to walk, so I had to save you!’”Her mother is stated in this song, the act of breaking her legs meaning that she is restraining her and holding her back from a relationship, thus hurting her in the process. The part where her mother tells her it is too dangerous to walk to justify breaking her legs is symbolic of how her mother is protecting her from small harm of getting with that peculiar man, and hurting her more largely in the process by breaking her ties with him, (in this metaphor, her legs). “Bruno, did you know; that the Greeks, in the morning, would eat oranges? They were firm believers, of fruit curing fevers, and I agree. See, they believe, an orange warms the stomach..” Is a direct reference to the name of the song. It means that she has found some sort of peace and happiness, the orange symbolizing happiness and calmness being found and warming the stomach. The song is called/named, ‘Bruno is orange’, so Bruno is the orange. He is the reason for her peace and happiness. He must’ve agreed to help her keep her relationship going, and is therefore the reason she is glad. The ‘fever’ is the sickness she felt, being judged for loving her beloved. So, it is cured by an orange. (in this case, Bruno is the orange.)
