You are right, he is a designer, writer, and producer with many, many games. My point still stands though. Also this from Ted Price.... "The potential of the cloud for console developers is pretty large," he stated. "Over the next five or six years, it's one of those technologies that will change in meaning as we see more games come out and take innovative approach to the more and more offline processing that's available."
"Mark Cerny is game programmer and nothing more" Thanks for making my point, since programmers are the ones who study the technologies used in order to make the magic happen. And still you're wrong, Mark Cerny worked on several hits for over 30 years now, not only as programmer but with several other functions and now for the 1st time he's a gamer director on a game. This man was one of the first to learn how to work with the complex arquitecture of the PS3, which is not easy job.
This guy is a fucking genius. He was in college taking two courses when he was fucking 16 years old at 17 he started working on videogames. This is a guy who spend it's holiday season researching the X86 technology and history to see if it was viable to a videogame console. Also you seem to forget the fact that Sony has some of the best engineers in the world working with him, he's not designing this console alone. He also speaks japanese, one of the reasons he was choosen as system arquitect.
I never said he is a GOD of programming etc, but for those who say he's nothing more then a game programmer are mistaken, he's also a visionary, and has gotten somewhere in his career, not many can say that they've gotten that far in the game industry, he should be proud.
Mark Cerny is lengend. He has done so much for the gaming community. The guy designed so many great games: Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, God of War, Uncharted, the list goes on.
Yes but no one at Microsoft has ever said it can improve "graphics". All they said is that it can improve performance, which is actually true because it can use the cloud to do extra processing which makes the system overall faster
I can't wait to get my hands on the Dualshock 4 controller. It looks really slick and nice, and the fact that it's a little bigger or at least a little more Xbox-controller-like is very good. I don't mean the button layout, but the two things on the side of the controller that you hold in your hand. The DS4 seems to be as ergonomic as it gets. It looks very nice, just like the X1 controller. Unfotunately, I don't want the Xbox One. But the Xbone Juan controller looks really really awesome.
I swear, this would have never happened back in 2006 had Microsoft and Sony went down such different paths. The power, influence, and prevalence of the Internet nowadays is astounding.
Every time someone interviews this guy he gives new info that make wanna build a time machine that could get me to the release date for the ps4 dang I'm excited for the ps4
+goldeneye0010 GaiKai may not be a big arse company, as Microsoft. But they have serval of worlds most skilled network engineers and programmers employed, a league that Microsoft can't never be placed into and fight against.
microsoft is not using the cloud for streaming game video, that requires higher internet bandwidth, microsoft is dividing hard complicated calculations on the cloud to do that work, so that the CPU is free with a lot of "horsepower" to use on gameplay and graphics, sony only have servers to 3d render full games to the console, their ps4 console is not made to offload calculation to the cloud that is three times hard to do with one CPU, the cloud server does with no problem
Sony didn't buy out Gaikai until July 2nd, 2012. They must have seen the document and then saw that Microsoft was going towards the cloud and they couldn't be left behind. The document was circulating on the Internet before that time. The document talks about Microsoft doing the same thing as Gaikai and using the cloud exactly in the same way, it was supposed to come out in 2015 in the document, but Microsoft moved it up and changed how the cloud would affect the XB1.
I still use my 40GB original PS4. I just put a 1TB HD in it so I don't have to delete my PS+ games to download more. Still the best investment I've made in the past decade.
Lost Addessey used 4 discs, but most of the biggest games used 3 discs, like Final Fantasy XIII, Mass Effect 2 was 2 disks, but I think that for the final part you had to swap the first disk in, Blue Dragon had 3 discs. L.A. Noire got up to 6 disks, but Rockstar managed to compress it in 3 discs. But yeah, answering your question Lost Oddessey was a 4 discs game.
Great. My only thoughts were about wether the Controller would be useful for FPS. Now I´m definately sure, PS4 is really the best place to play. Glad I went over from Microsoft to Sony.
He made iconic characters..he was also inducted into the hall of fame of Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences. The only people that should recieve the title of "industry legend" would be Hideo Kojima, Mark Cerny and Shigeru Miyamoto.
No, I cam here to watch this video and saw people calling out about stuff they have no idea about. I didn't come here to troll. I am sorry you got that impression. These days trying to set the story straight is known as trolling or being a "shill". I acknowledged my mistake on Kojima, but Cerny has never used Azure so.... The cloud is a very loaded word and can mean many things, but "Cloud Processing" is very specific.
The Sun can beat the clouds Even if the clouds can cover the sky, no cloud has ever covered the sun. Even when the sky is covered by clouds, the sun is always shining. No cloud has ever darkened the sun, even in the most rainy day.
Yes but it does not prove the Xbox one can't do it, just that sony can't. I always thought that the reason the cloud can help is that it can process the games engine so that resources are freed up for other tasks such as streaming, recording or performance increases. I think what he's trying to say is that the cloud cannot directly process graphics, but that does not stop it from processing everything else so that the console itself can increase the graphics or performance of the game.
I believe the quote was 40 times the power of the 360. I am not going to get into specifics of if the quote is wrong or right. I do see the server space as a game changer in many ways and I think many people are going to be surprised. Microsoft can test this stuff and I believe that we will start to see some compelling titles using the server based technology by 2014. I believe there is substance here and not hype.
Finally someone is honest about cloud processing. When the Xbox guys talked about cloud precessing help rendering [Stars and the like], in order to legitimise the idea of an always online console, it was laughable. If you really want to do that, why not render everything in the cloud and stream it to the device. It's far less complicated and produces the same result, and that's what Gaikai does best. can't wait to see it up and running.
The issue is how they approach it. Sony made a a machine that is primarily a gaming one, with entertainment features. Microsoft made a machine that is primarily an entertainment one, then added gaming features. The Issue, is that their installed fanbase are gamers, so this is rather backwards if they actually wanna sell more consoles.
he is not only a low lever programmer but a game designer and business man. one of the best in a multi-million industry by the way. the word "genius" has many definitions not only "having an iq above 120"
Better controller is not a valid argument because I can honestly say that I hate the mis-placed thumbsticks on the 360 controller and how bulky and heavy it is due to the battery. Also, better performance on mutliplatform does not exist. Yes, PS3 is harder to develop for because of the cell processor, but there isn't really any difference between the systems. The latest GTA V gameplay footage was on PS3. EA games, Ubisoft games....they look and play identical. Well, except Skyrim cause Bethesda.
Mark Cerny is awesome! And i am sure of this- We have him to thank for this super, game-orientated console, PS4 we are getting by the end of this year!
such a great interview and people only talk about fanboys? im so glad Sony got this guy working for them, he seems to actually know and care of the gaming industry. i am so buying a PS4 and the hardware being in the hands of this guy, the PS4 and gamers might have a great future.
The funny thing is mostly all pc games use a X-box 360 controller as an option which I use myself when playing fps games.Plus you can plug your pc up to your tv through the hdmi ports and actually play in your living room.
Sony won't be able to offer anything like what Microsoft has because of many reasons. Microsoft is load balancing code between servers and the console, using the compression of their Z77 Move Engine, they can compress and uncompress data on the fly and inject it directly into the GPU's own memory. This means that a LOT less bandwidth will be taken up and a world can be very dynamic as 3D meshes are uncompressed in the back ground in hardware and injected directly into memory.
The Cloud can render and stream unbeliveable graphics, but the current infinite power is not enough - it needs about 40% more of unlimited possibilities.
You see, that's the problem. Graphically, PS3 is superior to Xbox 360. Take for instance the Naughty Dog games (Uncharted, Last of Us), GT5 which runs at 1920x1080. The first party studios know how to break down the cell processor because this thing is damn powerful. Also, blu-ray disc gives them much more space. Problem is, it's like solving a puzzle and third party studios do not like solving puzzles.
Well people don't like a sudden shift. It's best to opt for gradual change so people don't get the "forced" feeling. I'm sure people will warm up to the Xbox, but with your smartphone example, you want to add more rather than change more. Over time, the latter is perfectly applicable, but in the first few years, you have to show some love to the fanbase.
I pray for those whovare getting the ps4 and xbone to not have a heart attack from the awsomness of both consoles. We don't want no gamers to leave this world.
The new eye can shoot 3D video, and measure distances, and has like 4 microphones to tell where the sound is coming from. I wanna know how the new Kinect is any better.
Yes but most people are online anyway, so most people will still be able to benefit from the cloud. It's where the future is heading and you'll be hearing a lot more about it soon
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention I am mainly a PC gamer and I custom built this PC specifically for that. It's more powerful than either of the systems. So I'm basically only getting a PS4 for the POTENTIAL to have some good exclusives down the road. Right now I don't see anything I'm excited for though.
Microsoft seems to be copying what Sony is doing every step of the way now. Why don't they get their system architect talking about the hardware? This guy is now the new unofficial face of PlayStation. He's the most interesting person to listen too. Microsoft needs a guy like this to sell the tech. A hype man like Flava Fla.....
Let's not forget that Sony actually owns the rights to Blu-Ray. And also let's not forget that (as Mark said), the PS4 is a gaming console. If you want some kind of entertainment center, then go get the Xbox One, but if you want the best gaming console and a legit entertainment platform, then PS4 is the right choice.
Sony bought Gaikai because they knew they were going to need to find a company that would fit with the document that Microsoft came out with (do a google search for this file - 92821757-XBox-720-9-24-Checkpoint-Draft-1.pdf). Notice this PDF file it says "Cloud in 2015". This is from "September 2010" (before the Gaikai purchase). This document was released on the Internet well before the July 2nd, 2012 purchase of Gaikai.
And there we have it: "Trying to boost the quality of the graphics, that won't work well" Can we 'NOW' go back to normality and stop thinking (Like certain fan-boy's) that cloud-computing has this magic button next to it that say's "Can Do Everything".
I leave mine on all the time too. If mine starts running louder, I just take out an air can and get rid of all the dust, and that's about once a month. What went wrong with yours?
those kind of people are bright light in the business world of fucking lies and money. 50+ years old, still young and passionate, short, simple and straight answers. nothing to hide, nothing to worry about. that's why we love him, how we can. some consciously = true love and knowledge, some unconsciously = fanboy love and habit. you confuse me with second type.
He, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, all dropped from college. He left college at 17 and joined Atari, and he speaks Japanese good which I really wanna learn but never learned even the basics.
Damn I love his voice. So soothing.
Also this dude seems *too* smart. Like mad scientist living in a volcano kind of smart.
IGN's interrogation room
You are right, he is a designer, writer, and producer with many, many games. My point still stands though. Also this from Ted Price....
"The potential of the cloud for console developers is pretty large," he stated. "Over the next five or six years, it's one of those technologies that will change in meaning as we see more games come out and take innovative approach to the more and more offline processing that's available."
Mark doesn't look like he's been awake for 3 years now. I love sony!
Looking forward for part 2.
"Mark Cerny is game programmer and nothing more" Thanks for making my point, since programmers are the ones who study the technologies used in order to make the magic happen. very good interview, cant wait for the rest. Mark is very professional, I like that.
Very nice! And I am great full for his work and am excited for the play station
This guy is a fucking genius. He was in college taking two courses when he was fucking 16 years old at 17 he started working on videogames. "Trying to boost graphics won't work well in the cloud"
And thats what Microsoft built the X1 on.
And clearly MS failed
this didn't age well
1:04 good job Cerny on not going into a 1 minute Microsoft "television is the future" dialogue, lol. This guy knows what he's talking about.
Mark cerny knows what the gamers want and also best voice ever because he's so calm when talking.
Cameraman. Please don't zoom so close on Mark's face
He's selling the console very well but I also like his honesty. The fact that he was open about the controller and its issues was nice
i could listen to mark talk all day, he has such a calming tone to him it makes me want to sleep, in a good way lol
Cool paisley shirt Mark and interesting interview. I could listen to him all day
LOve Mark Cerny lol sound of voice
Yes but no one at Microsoft has ever said it can improve "graphics". All they said is that it can improve performance, which is actually true because it can use the cloud to do extra processing which makes the system overall faster
Mark Cerny is my childhood hero! I love this guy.
Awesome interview! Seems like a cool guy.
The verdict PS4 wins it all it took it all to victory so many people want it
Well they definitely won lol
I did not know that, thanks for sharing.
I can't wait to get my hands on the Dualshock 4 controller. It looks really slick and nice, and the fact that it's a little bigger or at least a little more Xbox-controller-like is very good. Yes, I believe that. It makes a lot of sense. That's why most high-end gaming PCs have large towers and big cooling fans.
I swear, this would have never happened back in 2006 had Microsoft and Sony went down such different paths. The power, influence, and prevalence of the Internet nowadays is astounding.
You guys took the meaning of closeup to a whole new meaning.
Very good interview. Nice job IGN!
What? Someone who respects people who prefer things other than what they do on the internet? You're a rare breed. Stay golden.
Whenever I see him in an Interview I know I chose right :-)
I could listen to him talk for years
Every time someone interviews this guy he gives new info that make wanna build a time machine that could get me to the release date for the ps4 dang I'm excited for the ps4
+goldeneye0010 GaiKai may not be a big arse company, as Microsoft. But they have serval of worlds most skilled network engineers and programmers employed, a league that Microsoft can't never be placed into and fight against.
These questions were all over the place. No smooth transition from one to the next

Well, it's different in that case. The controller is a personal preference which is why I said it shouldn't be used as an argument...
I preordered Knack and Killzone. Honestly I'm more excited about Knack than any other launch title.
Mark Cerny is a legend because of what he has accomplished during his career. He deserves the title of "genius".
Can you do this again?
No, I cam here to watch this video and saw people calling out about stuff they have no idea about. I didn't come here to troll. I am sorry you got that impression. It was just uploaded, search "PlayStation 4 Architect Mark Cerny - Interview" and you should see them all listed.

The camera was so zoomed on Cerny I could see his pores
this man is one of the main reasons we have video games now these days
Finally someone is honest about cloud processing. When the Xbox guys talked about cloud precessing help rendering [Stars and the like], in order to legitimise the idea of an always online console, it was laughable.

Love this guy he actually listens to the consumer
It has over 50 exclusives in the works right now and 20 of them will be launching the first year of the PS4
The issue is how they approach it. Sony made a a machine that is primarily a gaming one, with entertainment features. Microsoft made a machine that is primarily an entertainment one, then added gaming features.

My has never broke I got one the day it released, and it still runs strong
so true even the way he talks and he think his words it is just a genius level....above us
I cant get that image of Mark Cerny drawn like a Quentin Blake illustration out of my head.
such a great interview and people only talk about fanboys? im so glad Sony got this guy working for them, he seems to actually know and care of the gaming industry. i am so buying a PS4 and the hardware being in the hands of this guy, the PS4 and gamers might have a great future.

Mark is such an amazing talent and a credit to sony! The miyamoto of Sony perhaps?
He's a master at what he does...a PS4 is already secured for me on launch day...
Sony won't be able to offer anything like what Microsoft has because of many reasons. Just by looking at Cerny, you can tell his brain is always working on overdrive. He is a genius. A savant.

I don't think people realise how much of a genius this guy is!
In his spare time, Cerny should definitely consider narrating audio books.
Let's not forget that Sony actually owns the rights to Blu-Ray. And also let's not forget that (as Mark said), the PS4 is a gaming console. If you want some kind of entertainment center, then go get the Xbox One, but if you want the best gaming console and a legit entertainment platform, then PS4 is the right choice.
you sir..are a god in the gaming industry
I need part 2 ASAP thanks in a advance -_-
He is a genius,no question asked.
Sony bought Gaikai because they knew they were going to need to find a company that would fit with the document that Microsoft came out with (do a google search for this file - 92821757-XBox-720-9-24-Checkpoint-Draft-1.pdf). Dude chill. We're just having a laugh. Everyone or most of us who clicked on this video like mark cerny and respect him for what he is.
am i the only one who likes the way mark cerny talks?
cant wait to have this system in my hands all to myself, gonna be so fucking good
And you like it so far
I leave mine on all the time too. If mine starts running louder, I just take out an air can and get rid of all the dust, and that's about once a month. What went wrong with yours?
i really wanna start playing on my soon to be mine ps4 now !!!!! i cannot wait anymore
those kind of people are bright light in the business world of fucking lies and money. 50+ years old, still young and passionate, short, simple and straight answers. nothing to hide, nothing to worry about. that's why we love him, how we can. some consciously = true love and knowledge, some unconsciously = fanboy love and habit. you confuse me with second type.
Yeah, cerny sure does look crazy but his voice is so damn calm!
I agree with you, Microsoft should be more open so some of the people on here would buy a clue and get real.
its okay and thank you
Ha cerny is so chilled out all the time
Cerny's a legend, but something about his manner in this video comes off as unsettling.
Love that he said primary function is games unlike Microsoft whose primary function is TV. And ads and more TV and business and TV..
He, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, all dropped from college.
He left college at 17 and joined Atari, and he speaks Japanese good which I really wanna learn but never learned even the basics.
