  • Lenses like these are the reason that Pentax users are feverishly dedicated to their cameras. If you’re coming to this video as someone who has never held or used a good, vintage Takumar lens, it’s hard to convey just how wonderfully well designed these lenses are.
Takumars do an excellent job of marrying exceptional optics, small size, superb build quality, and stunning overall handling and feel into an open relationship of communal bliss. Back in the day, the Asahi slogan was something like ‘you just have to hold a Pentax,’ and that’s not wrong. Takumars were designed as users’ lenses where the feel and interface matched the image quality.
Fisheyes are a hard lens type to use, but this one, covering the entire frame is not as hard as some. And it honestly doesn’t distort the scene as much as many similar lenses. I would be lying to you if I said I enjoy using fisheye lenses. I do not. I find the perspective warping to be off-putting.
But if I had to use one fisheye lens, it would probably be this one. I do prefer the Takumar 6X7 35mm fisheye from a usability standpoint, but this lens’ size, performance, and completely enjoyable handling can’t be matched in this class of lenses.

I do not have a 17mm f/4 Takumar fisheye but I do have the following non-circular fisheye lenses:
    16mm f/2.8 Nikkor for full-frame
    8mm f/2.8 Rokinon for APS-C digital
I found the sample images in this video very useful for stimulating the use of my fisheye lenses.

Nice! Fisheye lenses can be a lot of fun to use.

I may be wrong, but from what I remember, the Fish-eye lens were developed for full-sky astrophotography. I have to admit, I have a Zuiko 16mm lens, but I don't use it very much. I know, I should as I could get quite 'arty farty' as one friend says

That's exactly correct. The original Beck Hill Sky Lens was designed specifically for that and many fisheyes had that as a key intent, including the Nikkor 8mm that I reviewed a year ago. This lens would also work for that but differently because it doesn't project a circular image that directly correlates to the sky's hemispherical shape.
I do plan a video about fisheye lenses in general for next year or 2025, I forget where I have it penciled into the calendar, but once that's done, I may never touch another fisheye lens. Honestly, the perspective distortion just doesn't benefit my subjects.

Nikon developed the fisheye/Sky lens for arctic/Antarctic weather monitoring and came with charts to calculate how fast clouds were moving ... 🦘

Can't wait til you review their 18mm f11 Fisheye. As a 6.y.o., it was incredible to see a pancake fisheye, a must own "when I grow up". Not sure what to think of it now.

You know, that lens wasn't even on my radar, but now it is. That's TINY. I can't think of a smaller M42 lens than that. I've been trying to find a tiny and wide travel lens in M42, too. That might fit the bill.

I love a fisheye (skylens) for those rare special times when they really add something to the image ... 🦘

Rare times. :D I agree, too, that when the right shot arises, there's no comparing with a fisheye.
