One of my teachers/mentors taught me a valuable leasson of the realistic side of finding work in any industry and as I've experienced so far it almost always is true. "Sometimes it isn't about what you know, but who you know." Connections people, make them even if you hate it. It gets your foot in the door anywhere, go get what you want.
kill your editing career, sure, but these rules really apply to any entrepreneurial ventures. Even philisophically they're a few good rules to follow in well, any, thing your learning really... it feels like this video is using an editing career as an example of classic networking and business mistakes. Genuinely very helpful tips!
One of these points was understood by the great character actor Emmett Walsh. He said, “when I walk into an audition, the director has 12 problems. If he can cast me for one empty role, he only has 11 problems. That’s what I provide him.” Mentioned in his NYT obit.
In another interview, he mentioned that before he became an actor, he had a college degree in accounting, and his whole life that helped him manage money wisely with the highs and lows of an acting career.
Those are great networking and business lessons. Thank you for making this.

Quite a video - so good. It starkly contrasts with the fan trailer video that was just two videos before this one. There was a part of me that felt if I learned movie trailer editing, it would be a good stepping stone. But now I'm rethinking things.

Editing is the most important aspect of filmmaking in my opinion, along with story, and as we continue to publish short films on our channel we only hope to improve in this field. Hmm, I make these "mistakes" regularly & have edited on major movies - just see Taken 3 as an example. Some of my best work.
I like the upbeat tempo he gives with his advice. There is excitement in his strategy and not just a step by step idea.

I follow a blogger known as "Ask a Headhunter" and he gives pretty much the same advice here - especially #2. It applies to business, as well as creative jobs.

I studied for 10 years. Worked for many minor companies. I have never had any opportunity. Now i work in retail. My dream of being a great editor is in shambles.

Wow...I still make some of these mistakes...especially working full time in a place where I can't develop my ideas and solutions...because the productions are very basic, very frequent and under the supervision of people who don't know the issue...and you feel frustrated...it's something to think about...

This is crap that may seem very sincere. It's just like all those "advice" you get from financial advisors and what not. They wouldn't bother to make such videos if they really had THE ANSWER on what to do, or they would be occupied doing that themselves :)
You are right as a lot of advice can feel trite or pithy. But, no one call tell you "the answer" on what to do to be happy or successful. Even if they try, it would only apply to themselves. People join cults because that person says they have the answer, and it turns out badly. These tips are not "do this thing", but suggestions on approaches to consider. IMO, no matter what, you must try for yourself and figure out what works for you, ask yourself what you really find "cool", and there is a lot of luck in finding a happy and successful career and there is no guarantee.
It's important to note that advice from people's lives have a lot of confirmation bias. One person's dream is the stable corporate job, while another one is to be on the road and always hustle for the next contract. The important thing is to figure out what you want for yourself. Luck also plays a huge role in life, and there is no guarantee for reaching your goals even if you do everything right and no one can help you. Good luck though, take that frustration and you can achieve greatness!
