Out of all the train engine designs I like this one the best. It has a sort of mean look to it when seeing it head-on. With the two sloping windows as eyes and the light in the middle being its nose, one has to consider it might have a sort of hunger for anything that gets in it's way. Gotta love it 😀

So the engineer was gracious enough to allow my friend and I to ride in his cab of a Milwaukee Road F-unit, in Wisconsin. I was so excited, that I told my mom about it, and she was so happy for me. Great video. As a life long railroad enthusiast it was wonderful to see another train lover behind the throttle of such a beautiful machine with a look of pure joy in his eyes. Very entertaining and heartwarming video. Great job all around Don! I'm jealous, I've never even been in the cab of an F unit.
I had the very same experience..Here in S.Pasadena, Ca. I became friends with a real UP engineer named Frank...He was one of 5 first call engineers in the L.A, area..Well guess what. Yep, we went down to the yard at 4th st & Mission Rd. where his tandem GenSets were parked..(Sun. no RR traffic). We climbed in, he started them, and he sat me down in the throne.. I [we] watched the air go to 90 Lbs. I released the brakes and moved the throttle up. There I was rolling 1:1 scale diesels! Frank had me go to different notches, 1,3,4,5,4,2,1. No I never got to feel run 8. But what a thrill; a life time dream finally came true ! We only went about 3/4 mi and back, and I did get to feel a couple switch frogs under us, but of course couldn't go out onto the main. This was about 2 years back. He and his wife must have moved as I haven't seen them in our mutual coffee hang for over a year now... And no, it wouldn't happen again as, alas, he was retiring in a few weeks (dang !).. I'm wearing an authentic UP jacket today that was given to Frank as a gift at the UP party that he told me later he didn't really care for. It's not a baggy thing. It's snug like a racing jacket, black-silver-white and the UP insignia..Coooool, real cool, huh !... M
Just saw this now... They moved away after his retirement.. I have his #, but we really weren't that close. Figure just let it slip into old memories...But yep, I really did run tandem Gen-Sets..... Thanks, M

Very cool video folks..👍🏼😎 I can actually say I've been at the controls of a N&W Coal train in Sandusky Ohio. Back when I was a kid. My parents owned a Tavern, next to the tracks. It was conveniently called the Rail lounge. Back in the late 70s early 80s we served great burgers, fresh cut fries🍟 onion rings hot deep fried hot dogs And a lot of other items. Different companies in the area would take their lunch break at our tavern. Ford, New Departure And of course the railroad guys. I was only 8 yrs old. But after they ate lunch. They asked mom if I could go back to take a ride down to the coal docks. I didn't get to go all the way but I still got to learn about the controls and how the series or the code to the horn blows. As well as the air mechanism for the bell to ring. It will always be a great memory, I mean how many kids can say they operated a train. I use to know the # of the engine. But after all those yrs I've forgotten. I wish I could remember.🫤 45 yrs is a long time. But I will always be grateful for the N&W crew who shared such a great experience. I love playing the game called "Train Sim World" on my Playstation 4. It's so fun! You can drive all kinds of trains and even do a cold start on the engines. It's also available on PC
when i hired on conrail they did have a few of those covered wagons in service must say they gave a nice smooth ride, the old alcos very different as every time you went over a crossover at road speed, felt like the dame thing was going to derail and in winter you froze in them the cab heaters were crap and they were dirty too, was so happy when they took all those out of service and junked all of them, the old ge u boats were just as bad too.
Same because I grew up riding the train from DC to Florida every summer, I had the opportunity twice to go to training but they were both out of state and my kids are still very young and really depend on me being there
You can hear the Doppler effect at play during the whistles at the first crossing, interesting since it is stationary Vs approaching rather than the usual approaching and receding.
It makes me wonder if those are the same Illinois Central passenger cars that I used to see going through Genoa, Illinois years ago when I was a kid on the Freeport Subdivision of the IC. It's nice to know that some or maybe all of the train may have been saved.

You have probably found the answer by now but it is bailing off the independent brake on the locomotive. When the engineman takes air (sets a brake on the train) the engine(s) will also set up which do you do not want so you bail off the engine(s) brakes. Bailing off also resets the RSC or alerter so sometimes guys will bail off just for that reason.
When F3’s were put back into excursion service was the prime mover upgraded and repowered? If what prime mover? and what horn? Nice horn ....Thanks for your response

If you cant get hired there maybe try a Rail Road Museum. You might be able to take a class and learn how to drive a locomotive just like I did

Super!! I'm jealous too!!! I was in an E-8 on the Erie (pheobe snow) when I was 10 years old from Chicago to hammond indiana.
I rode a mile or two on an F7 from Decatur west to Hannibal. The Wabash was a great RR to work on.
I always wanted to be an engineer. Many things got in the way: college, the Navy, marriage, kids, etc. No regrets, but I've missed out on something.
