My older brother introduced me to this great film back in the late '80s. I've watched it a few times since, and tonight I introduced it to my stepson. I think he enjoyed it as much as I did! "If a Greek can do it, we can do it!" Amazing movie!!
This was one of my favourite movies of the 20th century. I adore Sean Connery, love Michael Caine, memorized much of Kipling's work, and therefore loved the character of Billy Fish.
"When we're done with you, you'll be able to slaughter your enemies like civilized men!" Love love love this movie. RIP Sean. Sad to see so many of the greats passing away. I'm not sure if there are any of that stature to replace them today.
Sam J, Fassbender, Clooney, Bale... these are a couple of really easy off-the-top names I can throw out for some of the current era's greats, both mature and in their prime. There are always great actors, and that doesn't diminish the prowess, charisma, or stature of any who preceded them. FMM, the here lovingly-dissed Bogart *was* actually one of the GOATs.

What an incredible film! As Connery well knows, the heart of any great film is a great story, and Kipling wrote a great one. Realized marvelously by all of this incredible talent, love and dedication!
The story was inspired by a revelation about anti Christ who will come into the world and conquer lands one by one at first he will call himself a king then he will demand to be reveired as a God , it's in the chapters of the Quran and in the book of revelation in the Bible.
My late husband loved 'The Man Who Would Be King' He taught at juvenile corrections facility. The students loved the part when they used the cut off heads in Polo. I love your, Sir Sean.
I remember organising some of the Indian musicians and working on the music soundtrack with Maurice for this movie.. He came to the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Indian music school that I had set up in London in 1975 I think it was. He described what he required and was looking for a way to incorporate Indian instruments into his soundtrack. He used some well known Indian artists from India, Pandit Ram Narayan and some living in the US, Ashish and Pranesh Khan as well as some London based musicians. Sahid Jaffree I met way back in 1969 at the Commonwealth Institute in Kensington in London where I also performed Sitar. He was a young man at the time reading some Urdu poetry. Very nice man. Still have the programme notes for it.
Clem...so glad to see this... still have your wonderful Sitar book by my side and study it to this day .... your Charukeshi here on YT is illuminating. Would have never known about your involvement in this legendary film. What other surprises are up your sleeve, or Kurta? Your Pal in Texas. Griff.
My second favorite movie ever and like the rest of the world, I have seen thousands. Even with all of the Techno-crap they have today, nobody can make a finer film than this. Classic! Incredible!
The very first Indiana Jones movie, "Raiders". Completely blew me away. Saw it on the second day it opened at a matinee at a cinemaplex outside the gates of Ft. Lee VA. Had no idea what it was about. Even though the matinee crowd was not as big as the evening crowd, it was still pretty packed. People were leaping out of their seats, cheering. It has been my BEST movie going experience so far. My 3rd favorite movie ever is 2001: A Space Odyssey
Amazing film! I've loved it all my life...for me, it's a film about friendship and what we can all accomplish together, even if it is something destructive...and the chemistry between Connery and Caine, lifts both their performances and turns this from a great film to something truly inspirational....and of course Kipling's story is the foundation. Peace. :)
oh, Daniel Dravot and Billy Fish together, awesome. Only Peachy Carnehan is missing. But is today which eternal Sean Connery who is gone. Will miss you, Sean!
I always hoped as I grew older, I'd turn physically into Sean Connery. At 55 my receeding hairline is on target but as for the rest of me...🙄 God bless you Sean for giving us all those fabulous movies and for being a nice, down to earth guy and a true Scot's supporter. We need a statue to Sean in Edinburgh
I watched this with my Dad on release, was quite young but left a lasting impression on me. That same year he took me to see Zulu. Very fond memories of both of them, proper movies that have stood the test of time.
Thanks for the posting. I saw "The Man Who Would Be King" in 1975 at the age of 7. Suffice it to say it's "Brilliant!" A wonderful adventure film and as good as it gets, like 1939's "Gunga Din."
So many good times at The Filmhouse. Usually pished after the movie so I can't recall them all. but they sure were fun. Seeing North by Northwest at the Filmhouse was a huge highlight.
This is awesome. I saw the MWWBK in February 1976 in New York City, just about as soon as it was released. The three of them -- Saeed Jaffrey, Michael Caine, and Sean -- made a WONDERFUL threesome. Saeed as Billy Fish would often say, "By Jove, no .... " then go on to explain what customs the Kafiris had. A really entertaining film. Almost cried when David/Sean drops to his death. And the music was FABULOSO, TOO!!
The first and early late 1940's radio versions of "The Man Who Would Be King" (aired on the ESCAPE radio show from CBS Studios in Hollywood) with many of the great radio Actors including John Dehner are excellent adaptions of this Rudyard Kipling story, well before 1956.
Brilliant clip of some true superstars of the cinema. In my opinion, this movie & " Casablanca " must be in the top 1 to 29 movies of all time. I'm a 69yo Aussie & have watched it at least 10 times & probably will watch & enjoy it another 20 times, before i kick the bucket.
'The Man Who Would Be King' may well be Connery's best film, but if you really want to see Sean Connery playing against type, look for 'The Offense.' That, I think, is his best performance. Anxious to shed his '007' image, he did this film in '72, with Sidney Lumet, playing a broken-down policeman corrupted by all the horror he's seen, finally driven over the edge trying to catch a child-molester. Trying to make one thing right, he destroys everything else around him. Excellent film, see it.
Wish I'd got to be part of this. I actually walked past the festival theartre when all this was going on. It's a shame Sean Connery won't be back for the EIFF but he's done alot for Edinburgh and Scotland and deserives to enjoy his retirement.
The radio versions of The Man Who Would Be King made in the 1940's on the popular radio show "ESCAPE", long before the film versions and all using the "The Theater of the Mind" as opposed to the visuals of the Silver Screen.
Sean Connery is rare good form here and I think this video is the most recent one of the great man speaking that exists. What a fine looking man for 80!
No mention of my favourite actor Christopher Plummer who was Kipling he was really good in this, he could go on the list for sexy seniors he is 82 in december and still going strong.
when sayeed arrived on set he was treated by a producer as a bit part player sean and michael refused to work until he was given the same status trailer named seat etc as them also hugely improved his fee as they said he was the third star of the movie
Some people age better than others. Added to which, he's been doing physical shit most of his life. Christopher Plummer, on the other hand, has done mostly dramas his whole life and probably hasn't worn his body out as thoroughly. But I can understand why he's never dipped out of retirement. he probably has health concerns he can't hide at this point.

What a guy! The Man Who Would Be King.. Incredible film. A favorite :)
"Correct" hits the nail right on the head. No other version Huston attempted could have possibly been as good as what he eventually achieved.
Billy was huge in this movie. RIP Sir!
I was 13 when it came out, and I saw it at the cinema. A "Boy's Own Adventure" if ever there was one.
Classic Rudyard Kipling novel made into an excellent movie. Just an unbelievable story with an amazing cast.
