It's not exactly like that. When he accept to returns to the role of Bond he make a deal with the producers. The deal was that they will give the same exact amount as he get for himself to this charity. So the producers paid twice.
In fact in the end he gave his salary of 1.2 M but he had negotiated a 12.5% of the US net profit on that particular movie. That profit earned him a total of 6. 7 millions US including his salary. It was a lot of money and the biggest percentage of profit that a Bond actor ever got. You can find all those informations on M16 community.
Connery doesn’t have the same affliction for Bond as say Roger Moore, but Connery moulded Bond into what it became though, but when he signed to make the first five films in the early 60s, it was on low money as nobody was sure how well it would do, but when the first couple of films made £140 million between them he wasn’t given a pay rise that he understandably wanted, he did get a percentage of the profits of the films later on but never a pay rise and when his contract ended after You Only Live Twice he wasn’t necessarily against continuing as James Bond but he was in the position to call the shots and Saltzman and Broccoli wouldn’t agree to his salary demands so he left, but he’d made five Bond films in just under six years and wanted to do other types of films, he was limited to what he could do because of the fact that back in those days they made a Bond film every year so he didn’t have too much time to do another film and have a bit of time to himself as he would be straight onto the next Bond, but he felt by You Only Live Twice that Bond himself was becoming secondary to the gadgets and the spectacle and had no qualms about giving it up and when George Lazenby resigned as Bond after the next film, it took the head of the studio to persuade Connery to return one more time with a £1.2 million salary which he donated to his children s charity but he’d aged considerably in the four years since You Only Live Twice and was overweight albeit he did lose some during the filming but you can tell in this interview that he was ready to leave Bond behind, the films were moving towards a more tongue in cheek lighter approach which didn’t suit Connery s interpretation of Bond from the 60s Cold War themed films. Bringing Connery back was a steady the ship appointment to get the fans back after On Her Majesty s Secret Service, relatively speaking didn’t do well compared to Connery s films.
A fine actor if ever there was one, one of the greatest of all time in the history of cinema. His “vodka martini shaken not stirred “ will be waiting for him at the pearly gates 🍸....here’s to you Sean 🍸R.I.P.
I like how he didn’t come up with some nonsense for being in Diamonds and was pure honest about it. I absolutely love Connery and Diamonds are Forever but there’s a reason Connery came back, I’m glad he was a genuinely honest person unlike many people returning to roles and say “Well the script and character we’re great, I really missed the role” Nope, he was straight up about it.
as a fan it's weird to see his apathy or indifference to bond. Connery was an enigmatic character, I think the only other person to come close as bond was Pierce. RIP
Those are the opening bars to the theme from "Diamond are Forever," which was Connery's final outing in 1971, when this interview was conducted. It was the second of 3 title songs to be sung by Shirley Bassey (that were actually used in finished films) and one of my personal faves. Not talked about quite as much as Shirley singing "Goldfinger," but it's a fabulous theme and her sultry voice gives it the perfect Bond feel. Definitely check it out.

Ya know it occurs to me we should change Connery's Bond film titles. Like for instance, GoldBrow, or From Brow With Love, You Only Brow Twice, Dr. Brow, Brow's are Forever, Thunderbrow, Never Say Brow Again, we can even throw in On Her Majesty's Secret Brow, and Browraker, For Your Brow Only,
He seems to be a bit thinner here than when he was filming Diamonds Are Forever, which makes me wonder why he didn't get fit for the film. I can only assume that he saw himself on film and decided to do something. He doesn't look that old imo, but the weight gain for Diamonds Are Forever did make him look older.
When Connery filmed Dr. No he was 32 and From Russia With Love was made in 63; filming on Goldfinger was in 64 and Thunderball in 65. By the time that he made You Only Live Twice, Connery looked and photographed heavier, perhaps 10 or 15 pounds; the same with Diamonds. He returned to "fighting weight" for Never Say Never Again in 83. I don't understand his adamant refusal to publicize his involvement in the Bond films and his antagonism for the producers. He made many good non Bond movies.
Connery never seemed to understand Bond made him a star. Bond producers took all the risk at beginning. No one knew of the success that would arrive. Most of Connery other roles were not commercial successes.
