  • Spent a week Diving and Herping in North Sulawesi Indonesia with The Lembeh Resort & Nomad Divers. I have been to both locations many times, but was very fortunate to find so many critters this trip: Hairy Octopus, Mimic Octopus, Long Armed Octopus, a giant Reef Octopus, Wunderpuss Octopus, Starry Night Octopus, Blue Ringed Octopus, and a wide range of cuttlefish and Squid, including a giant flamboyant cuttlefish, to name but a few. As normal. i had many issues with my camera, so messed up a considerable amount of footage; but the trip was great.
Lembeh Strait is the muck diving capital of the world and, is definitely one of the best macro photography destinations in the world. Underwater photographers flock here from all over the world to see a myriad of critters, frogfish, pipefish, nudibranchs, seahorses, juvenile fish, and other exotic animals. Don't expect beautiful coral reefs in Lembeh itself, but very scenic reefs exist at nearby islands.
Lembeh Strait in North Sulawesi near Manado, Indonesia, is a dive area rich with life. You can see more macro subjects here than you ever dreamed possible. The area of Lembeh is rich in dark volcanic sand, which is partially responsible for the rich marine life.
Lembeh Dive Resort was the first resort in Lembeh, followed by many more. Some people now think Lembeh is getting a little crowded but there are a lot of dive sites to visit, and it's really a matter of choosing a great dive operation. Lembeh Strait has a great assortment of strange fish, macro critters and nudibranchs. You can view photos and a list of all the Lembeh marine life in the muck diving critter guide.
Some of the species that you can see include hairy frogfish, flamboyant cuttlefish, juvenile barramundi cods, juvenile pinnate batfish, rhinopias, harlequin shrimps, mandarin fish, snakeblennies in the open, and large beautiful stinging anemones.
The Bangka Archipelago consists of a group of islands off the coast of North Sulawesi. These islands are:
Bangka, the largest, Gangga, Talisei, Kinabohutan, Tindila and the little island just offshore the mainland Tamperong.
Bangka Archipelago offers steep drop-offs, slopes and sharp Coral pinnacles covered in beautiful soft Corals and some magnificent soft Coral gardens.
The islands are quite exposed and often get strong currents and the surface condition can be rough.
Especially between July and September there can be strong currents and surges with high waves, with a negative affect on the visibility.
The water temperature is around 27°C.
Best time to dive is between March - June and between October - December when visibility can be up to 35 metres.
The dive sites, located around the islands and along the mainland coast, offer a great diversity like pinnacles, rocks, slopes, a few walls, and caves. Fixed fauna is impressive with very nice colourful soft Corals and Sea fans.
The almost undamaged marine life includes all kinds of Scorpionfish, Frogfish, Pipefish, Triggerfish, Eels, Seahorses, Nudibranchs and much more.
Then you may encounter the bigger marine life like Trevally, Tuna, Rays, Sharks, Turtles and Napoleon wrasse, Dugongs, Dolphins and amazing macro critters. The coral is some of the best i have seen in Asia.
Shark numbers are decreasing at a shocking rate.... What all people, especially divers, should know about the shark population.
There are four villages on Bangka Island, but there is no road.
Best way to visit one of the villages is by boat or, for the more adventurous people, go hiking through the forest.

@@nomaddiversbangka8408 ha ha very nice to hear from you my friend. Bangka was incredible as usual! The macro was incredible: hairy octopus, mimic octopus and and a monster sized flamboyant cuttlefish, to name but a few. Corals could be the best in Indonesia. I love staying at your resort: so natural and calming. Cheers
