Life is NOT a Journey - Alan Watts

- Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 - 16 November 1973) was a British philosopher, writer, and speaker, best known as an interpreter and populariser of Eastern philosophy for a Western audience. His philosophies seem to transcend ego, politics and limitations. His monologues have a powerful way of connecting distant abstract ideas with the present moment and his words have a unique way of putting life into perspective. Life is a gift.

I'll just leave that here.

Maybe, "Like isn't a problem to be solved, but an experience to be lived", however, we need to know how live our life.
I’ve always had fun all through my life. Like camping nearly every month. I’ve travelled overseas to many countries, & tried many different things. I turn 60 tomorrow, looking back I’m glad I didn’t just wait till I retire to do things. I’ve met people through my life who think I’m wasting my money by travelling so much & going away for weekend trips & camping. I think they are the ones wasting their lives just working and saving all the time. Life is short, have some money put away for bills & emergencies. But always have fun along the way through life because none of us know how long we have to live!
Jocelyn Carr_ I think you have the right of it.
Do you know the book "The Why Café"? Your comment reminded me a lot of its message.
the thing is, for me, living alone or maybe with some pets, and good headphones, and just a small, comfortable house near a lot of grass and trees, just a lot of nature, would be the peak of my life, people take it the wrong way when someone says live how you want, they usually go for your approach, travelling a lot and doing stuff like sky diving, thinking it's the only way to live, of course, you're probably very happy with what you did, it most likely was exactly what you wanted , and from your words it seems like so, but people think doing stuff like that will make them happy when in reality they can't even appreciate their hometown, so they go to places like japan, they look at a building and some peach blossoms and they think they saw everything there is to see when in reality they barely looked at the surface, and their hometown's maple trees would be beautiful to japanese people, what im trying to say in this bible i just realized i typed is, people think doing what you did is perfect for everyone, when in reality, only a couple of people in thousands really truly enjoy it, also, camping seems fun!
I’m 15 and I realized I should get drunk and go out. How would I make the most of my youth?
Benis Just do it, we have different choices and desires. You don’t need anyone to validate your choices.
I really like how this clip of Watts is so short, to the point, and easily understood in a simple analogy of art. A great quick existential checkup.
Follow your heart, feel the rhythm, breathe. It doesn't matter whether you call it a dance or a journey, it matters that you understand that there is no past nor future but an infinite present so BE HERE NOW!
Yeah🎉 time is an illusion only present moment actually exists
The Future is a concept
Be here now. Great album.

This is the first time I've ever commented on anything online. This video is the coolest thing I've ever seen online and has made me feel soooo much better about my life!

The older you get the more it will cost to become happy.
+Frans Tammo Djibouti, and you?
And at the end of the day (fore some - figuratively speaking, for others - quite literally) you realize that nothing in fact can make you happy. That's when you get a chance to be happy at last :)
greed
I suspect this is a hormonal thing. I have been meditating like a monk for this year. and I can basically just feel the hormones doing their work, than passing out of the system. anger, stifling, giddiness.
What I also noticed is that we imagine our lives to be happier in the past by editing memory.
It took a few years to notice that. What I did was just sit arond mildly amused and think to myself " I bet ill remember this stuff was epic when I'm older " and sure enough this happened.
like realistically you don't remember all the hours they put you in class where you didn't know what was going on, felt social pressures from hell or thought you were dying when you were in a car and about to puke your guts out.
You are already happiness you don't need to go out and look for an external source to maintain being happy it's in our nature to be happy but the world likes to depend on the physical aspect of everything when nothing is truly even physical down to the atoms. Everything is a vibrating frequency that's very slow and appearing to be still. Everything lies in your mind and how you create the reality in it because life is simply a dream we take to serious🌬
Really needed this reminder today, thank you.
Isn’t the whole idea of the premise ‘life is a journey’ that it is the journey that matters, NOT the destination? The journey being the experience of being alive, failing, learning new things, evolving of relationships and enjoying the world around you. If anything, this whole speech actually reinforces the idea of life as a journey. Kind of misleading title, I don’t think it matches the points that are made in this speech at all.
Yeah, this whole video is basically just an opinion from one famous person. Life is so complex that it fools us into thinking that it's simple. But it's not, certainly not simple enough to sum up into a speech that's less than 5 minutes long. We all have our own opinions and our own outlooks on life and this certainly does not support mine in the slightest. Like I said, life is not simple enough for someone to just sum it up in the matter or less than 5 minutes. Even if the speech is filled with pretty drawings and an end quote anyone who busts their ass in the real world to make a living would love to hear. The reality is, if you don't make money, you're not gonna survive long enough to see the pretty sunset at the end of the video. Cash is king and this video is more of an escape from reality than anything else. Of course work is boring to literally everyone on the planet, but what happens to your quality of life when you're living under a bridge begging for money because you just wanted to do literally NOTHING ELSE but enjoy yourself and watch the sunset. That's reality. We all want sunshine and roses but the real sunshine and roses are the positivity and kindness you carry with you everywhere you go and whatever you do. Life doesn't start when you quit your job and stop climbing the corporate ladder, life starts when you realize how good you have it because you're not living under a bridge and you have a beautiful home with a beautiful wife and beautiful children that you can afford to raise with the money you work hard to earn because you don't get paid to just sit on your ass. Well I guess in 2020 that's a different story...
True
I think what you're thinking of is what people mean when they say "life is a journey." Life shares many similarities with journey, but the philosopher's whole point was that an analogy to music provides us with a better understanding. The analogy between life and music is far more exact than the analogy between life and journey. And by being an inexact analogy to life one can very easily argue life is not a journey. But that doesn't make it wrong to say life is like a journey. It's a bit semantic, but hopefully that makes sense.
@@awonderfulfeeling8588 He is not saying you should only live in the moment, he is saying you should remember what is actually important to you. Here is a different take on the same thought that might work better for you: life is like a Ressource management game, where you try to convert time into happiness as efficiently as possible. For most people a big part of that is having a job to get money, just make sure you don't loose sight of the real goal, so you end up optimizing the amount of money instead of happiness.
BTW, It is not a given that everyone find their job boring, here in Denmark we are reasonably good at focusing on what kids would like to work with when helping them pick an education/career and about 80% say they would keep their job even if they won a huge lottery and had no financial need to work.

A different take: Life is a Journey, not a Destination.
Make the Journey one of value, fulfillment, love, compassion as you follow "your" own path. Know yourself, lest you get lost trying to be someone you are not.
Thing is when people hear this they think "Oh! I need to throw away this thing i'm aiming at cause i'll never really get there. It makes so much sense! I'll go and find the things that make me fulfilled, not just successful.". And in that moment you fail to realize Watts' point: Chasing fulfillment or happiness or enlightenment or whatever it may be is the same game as chasing success. You have the ideal in front of you like a carrot on a stick but you'll never have the carrot because you need both hands to hold the stick.
So true... it’s easy to forget it’s the experience not the destination that matters. The experience of now!
And yet it is a journey with an end. But the end is not the point of the journey, it is what you explore and experience along the way...
This was beautiful, I felt like I needed this. Thank you!
I lost the anchor to my world two days ago. I am struggling to find meaning continuing on. I listen to this looking for knowledge. If anyone has any to share I’m willing to listen. God bless.
Live in the moment. Now is the end and you live happily
Great video and good point. I just never thought of the term "life is a journey" to mean that there is a destination. Quite the opposite is true. I always took that quote to insinuate that all life is, is a journey. So enjoy it. If you look at it like that, this video and that quote aren't too different after all;)
but every journey needs a destination, right? otherwise it isn't a journey; it's a joyride
Sing and dance to the tune of your own heart, only then will you be capable of truly appreciating the music in other's.
the greatest gift is to love and be loved in return - nature boy
to me, the point of life was always to be happy and enjoy living. the problem is, that in order to get that, you have to do what you dont like, something that doesnt bring you joy, in order to get money an status, to attract a mate. reality is, that in most cases, you can only enjoy a part of your life, the other one is work, mishap, strokes of fate and not getting, what you need to be happy and fullfilled.
This struck me so hard...

I do agree especially with the ridiculous “graded education “!!!!!!!
This is why I’m a free spirit. Not following this “journey” that “they” expect us to. I live each day freely and peacefully

Life is a performing art. We are all real time performing in it. Might as well enjoy our own show while on stage. And we are our main audience. So be a supportive crowd.
Wow...why haven't I been listening to this man before now? .... holy cow 🐄
The last line hit hard
People who cannot enjoy life often assume that accumulating wealth brings them fulfillment. They rush around, feed their addiction, over-state their own self-importance, and miss ever second of every day that can evoke enlightenment & contentment. Avoid people with no patience, for they are never able to see time as a vessel for growing all things.
Beautifully said👏 #life #dance #fullfillment
so life is art itself. . . an expression of the existence and non-existence

He is 70 now, retired and is still working for that end prize that end reward..... still working hard and doesn't realize that reward that prize he has been working so hard for all his life, working exhausting stressing for nothing.... well because it is himself. You are the prize, you are the reward folks. All the answers are within yourself, the meaning of life is within you! No one can tell you the meaning, you can only find it within oneself. Good luck and enjoy :D
3:13 Most eye opening part of the video.
Man does a great job using analogies to break down his wildly abstract speech
Anyway, I hope yall have a good time smiling happy❤️
your destination is where you started. when you came in the world with nothing your destiny is the leave in the world with nothing. if you think about it every point of a beginning will come back to that beginning
Its not the destination or the end it is the journey that counts. The journey is hard or easy depending on what you choose. If you choose the easy path you will never grow but you will be happy. If you want to grow to archive things you have not known (mainly to know thy self) then be ready for a hard journey because you will need to do things that you are uncomfortable with like having and raising a family and working with society to make it better. By doing these things you grow and learn. Or, you can just float through life never putting down roots with any thing, any one or any place and have fun but achieve nothing. Play at life or work life. The red pill or the blue pill it is your choice.
We are in the middle of Eternity, on a Eternal travel, the goal is Eternity.
This explains sadly the misinterpreted expectation of life most people are victims of!!
Life is a journey, of one's lifetime. So, there is a Way you walk it... not a right Way or wrong Way, there's just one's individual Way. Many walk a Way without ever knowing, but those awake choose their own Way. Sorry if it came out too philosophical 😅

Life is usually not what job you have, what field you get into career-wise, how great your title becomes. Life is somewhere in between. The songs you sing, the runs you run, the kites you fly, the people you laugh with, the stories you hear, the tales you tell to inspire, the dreams you have at night, the pets you adopt, the plant you finally managed to keep alive, the dinner that finally tasted good, the feeling of hopefulness, of gratitude, of amazement. It happens in between.

"Time is a game that children play expertly"
Thats deep
can u elaborate?
@@zbot I guess its that children are best at grasping the idea of playfulness, due to their state of mind, therefore they become the experts of "managing" time to its most valuable degree
@Jack Only my thought/opinion
As a child, time is ahead of you and you anticipate things, events, activities etc. As an adult, time unconsciously becomes a countdown and determines when things, events, activities etc. happen
Love this! Children have little concept of time and that doesn't bother them at all. They are totally immersed in the moment, especially if it's a game. We adults have forgotten how to "play".
This reminds me of the Beatles song "I'm Still Sleeping."
"Everybody seems to think I'm lazy,
I don't mind, I think they're crazy,
Running everywhere at such a speed,
Until they find, there's no need."
Im a huge beatles fan (In a cover band,I play bass) and it's supposed to be I'm only sleeping. Great inspirational song
The Beatles were woke as shit, so sad the whole psychedelics and hippie community died off with the war on drugs escalating
Running everywhere at such a speed... till they find, there's no need
Good point, but that song is called "I'm Only Sleeping". An even more cosmic Beatle song can be found on the same album (Revolver) -- it's called "Tomorrow Never Knows":
Turn off your mind, relax, and float down stream
It is not dying, it is not dying
Lay down all Thought, surrender to the Void
It is shining, it is shining
If you may see the meaning of within
It is Being, it is Being
That ignorance and hate they mourn the dead
It is Believing, it is Believing
That Love is all that Love is everyone
This is knowing, this is knowing
All plays the Game: "Existence" to the end
Of the beginning, of the beginning, of the beginning...
Or even "I Am The Walrus":
I am He as you are He and you are me and we are all together.
Even John Lennon backed off writing: I am Him as you are Him, and you are me...etc.
I think "Elohim" originally meant "our Higher Selves"
Can the Beatle shit for a minute, there's enough of that elsewhere.

THATS WHERE PARENTS GET THESE THINGS!
You seem like a wise and caring parent. Sadly, some believe good parenting is about forcing their kids to collect achievements that they can flaunt. Never do they stop to reflect on what this kind of parenting does to their kids. As was pointed out in schooloflife, this leads to an impression that love is no more deserved than the sum of ones achievements. They become desperate to please and impress others, and ultimately miserable when they don't recieve the admiration and love they feel that they have earned.

Playing gives purpose, big difference. The universe isnt reliant on us, we are mere transporters/vehicles for awareness itself, and we take our "selves" more serious than anything else, leaving us with a feeling of purpose. Play and love is the only thing purpose really can come from.

I have forgotten how to sing and dance.
As a human it is life.
As a child it is natural.
As an 'adult' it is forbidden.
Precious
Not necessary true! If you look in the right places, you would be surprised how many people - adults - there are who sing and dance without reservation. If you need a place to start, I would recommend you try going to a folk dance!
This is why you gotta just continue to be a child at heart. As an adult, you have money and access to do more things, so it's in a way more fun to be a child when you are older.
Who honestly cares? Like, who is forbidding you from doing something so simple and joyful? I act like a child all the time, there's nothing wrong with it. As long as you get your adult things done too. after that, who cares if you like singing and dancing?

@Bargert Agreed, this is not the way to have an open conversation.
Alan perfectly articulates what I realised in my 20s. The whole point of dancing is the dance. This is the ultimate truth

i realised this at 15 and it’s so nice seeing that people think the same way i do. I’m so glad that life is meaningless i wouldn’t want it any other way
@@jacobvaughanthomas I too would say I realized it at 14-15 ish (but perhaps not, I dont have perfect memory), but I definitely lost it in my late teens and early twentiees.
Believe it or not, the culprit was JBP even though so many find him wise. He taught me a lot of things, but he managed to convince me that I'm missing some fundamental part of the picture.

THIS is why, to me, being disabled is a BLESSING.
I CAN'T work a shitty 9-5 that I hate, just to barely make the rent... I get my $500 a month and its not a lot but that's what I've got and I'm not chained to any monotonous profession...
I'm free to explore my passions, though I'm limited by my body in many ways, and I can live my life moment by moment.
I'm limited in where I can live and things I can afford by my income but money isn't the key to happiness or success.
I'm counting my god damn blessings.
Ari October thank you for this.
But with just 500 per month, how can you do anything other than just paying your bills? How can you explore your hobbies and interests with so few money?
@@ancientgear7192 One can still do *some* other work, surely. I imagine it all becomes a matter of meeting such needs as they come. I'm 24, and I've lived a very happy life with not very much money or work experience at all. I've worked a job for maybe about two and a half years out of my life.
But I've never mooched off of anyone, never made a disturbance of myself, just sort of 'met the needs as they came'. Odd jobs here and there, and a sense of 'if I don't absolutely need it I won't buy it.' Forsaking a car and even taking the bus for simply walking to where I'm going. More time to think.
It's not for everyone. Nor is it commendable or merit-worthy or anything like that. I simply meet these things as they come and don't worry about it in the mean time. As soon as you start overplanning and overbudgeting and falling into the manic race of things, money and its uses can become a terrible cage.
I went to university on the government's dime. I'm fifty grand in debt. It doesn't bother me remotely, because somehow, I'm still not starving to death.
Thanks for sharing ur perspective, its a valuable one! I think a lot of people that can work hide away in their work- unconsciously to avoid discovering who they are and what they would do if money were no object. I'm learning to divorce my identity and vision of a joyful lifestyle from being to tightly married to work and money...sounds like you didn't have the option of not learning! Hope you enjoy a life of living your passions 💖✨

Reminds me of Time by Pink Floyd
this line in particular:
"So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
racing around to come up behind you again"
My favorite Pink Floyd jam :)
Every year is getting shorter. Never seem to find the time.
“And then one day you find ten years have got behind you. No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun”
“The sun is the same in a relative way but you’re older.
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.”
Is actually the next line.

Life is a bad movie. And no one gets to see the end of the movie.
And I'm just hoping to finish my popcorn before I have to leave.
Read some History. You'll find that Life is the best movie ever.
@@ViniloxiaKan but the history includes war, discrimination, people starving, people that only think in theirselves( or money )and do bad things to others, destruction of the planet and a lot of horrible things. I suppose the life is really a bad movie, and I don't know if the pop corn worth it
@@allancalderon6368 The popcorn has to be worth it. Or the movie will be in vein.
Pttt! Don't make me laugh! It's not a movie, movies happen without your involvement. It's not popcorn, you can only eat so much popcorn before your tounge goes numb to the taste and your lips start to sting. Life is about.... whatever you want. Love, joy, peace, patience, all things good. Being disciplined. The options are all there, and You get to decide, and then take wonderful action to move the mountains around you. We all feel sorry for the man who wastes his life, or the people who die in vain. What I got from that was that we have to live in the present n not constantly worry what the final outcome will be because then you will have missed out on a great portion of life
Exactly. A lot of people here seem to have missed this point.

Hello SpongeBob
The final outcome doesn’t matter. What matters IS the present
so i took some shrooms yesterday and tripped the hardest ive tripped in years, basically this last half year ive been getting into Alan watts all of it came crashing down on me into profound realization :
the short answer that i got from my trip was, Life is already the answer, to just be and be part of it, because you and I are apart of it, so enjoy it, love it... that and remember to drink water, like seriously drink when you are thirsty and eat when you are hungry.
also good job for being a person I mean it, you are amazing.

There's a story of this enlightened master that taught for years. Everyone would come hoping to hear the thing that would enlighten them. One day he told them the secret to his enlightenment "I don't mind what happens"
Terrible paraphrasing but you get the point.
Welcome to inner peace man, I’ve had that realization during one of my trips. After that, I’ve pretty much been able to handle my stress and anxiety. It’s freeing!
I love this. I was just talking to my husband the other day about how strange it is that we all stop playing when we are adults. As if we’re done having fun now and doing silly things. I love doing silly, fun things. Let’s all get out there and dance!
blueshoes915 im 28 and realize this. I work like a madman, just to get out of debt and “get ahead” financially. Only to realize around the corner there’s more debt and 💰 problems waiting ahead for me. “Do you want to buy a house? Invest for retirement? Save money for future kids? Etc etc”. I work so hard to get out of debt, yet our country is built and buried in debt forever lol.
Life is crazy
It is a lot to do with what is socially acceptable..... you supposed to behave in a certain way at certain age ...etc... I like a quote from somewhere...." You don't , stop playing because you are getting old,you are getting Old because you stopped playing "....
Tommy So true! This is a struggle for many Americans and it’s only getting worse. Then some go to college to try and get a better job but the pay gap is huge and most times you can’t even get a job in what you studied so you take a different job and make less money. Then you’re stuck with more debt. Bad cycle we’re in. But, heck, maybe if we played more, we’d be able to come up with some creative way to make more money, help more people, invent new things, etc. I wish you all the best and hope you have a beautiful, fulfilling life. 💕

That whole conveyer belt thing disturbed me a little. Like all education is a scam. And that's coming from someone who has casually agreed with the phrase "education is a scam".
@@Kryptospotted education is a scam lol. It’s literally the way our government indoctrinates people into believing what they want us believing. Why do you think so many young people love the idea of socialism? They’re literally pushing it through the education system. Not to mention you can’t even teach based off eye witness or experience. Example. Have you asked any kids today about 9/11? When it’s taught in school the teachers are only allowed to talk about what’s in the book. Not allowed to speak on what they saw. It’s censoring kids from reality. So there for modeling how they want the child to think. Government does not want a mass of people thinking for themselves. They’d be out of work.
@@kipp1755 actually I don't recall ever being taught once about the intricacies of socialism compared to capitalism in school - from what I've observed in university it arises when people are given the freedom to explore their own ideals and beliefs; being mixed with students with many different cultures and nationalities tends to shake up your perspective on the world
