  • Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 - 16 November 1973) was a British philosopher, writer, and speaker, best known as an interpreter and populariser of Eastern philosophy for a Western audience. His philosophies seem to transcend ego, politics and limitations. His monologues have a powerful way of connecting distant abstract ideas with the present moment and his words have a unique way of putting life into perspective. Life is a gift.

I’ve always had fun all through my life. Like camping nearly every month. I’ve travelled overseas to many countries, & tried many different things. I turn 60 tomorrow, looking back I’m glad I didn’t just wait till I retire to do things. I’ve met people through my life who think I’m wasting my money by travelling so much & going away for weekend trips & camping. I think they are the ones wasting their lives just working and saving all the time. Life is short, have some money put away for bills & emergencies. But always have fun along the way through life because none of us know how long we have to live!

the thing is, for me, living alone or maybe with some pets, and good headphones, and just a small, comfortable house near a lot of grass and trees, just a lot of nature, would be the peak of my life, people take it the wrong way when someone says live how you want, they usually go for your approach, travelling a lot and doing stuff like sky diving, thinking it's the only way to live, of course, you're probably very happy with what you did, it most likely was exactly what you wanted , and from your words it seems like so, but people think doing stuff like that will make them happy when in reality they can't even appreciate their hometown, so they go to places like japan, they look at a building and some peach blossoms and they think they saw everything there is to see when in reality they barely looked at the surface, and their hometown's maple trees would be beautiful to japanese people, what im trying to say in this bible i just realized i typed is, people think doing what you did is perfect for everyone, when in reality, only a couple of people in thousands really truly enjoy it, also, camping seems fun!

What I also noticed is that we imagine our lives to be happier in the past by editing memory.
It took a few years to notice that. What I did was just sit arond mildly amused and think to myself " I bet ill remember this stuff was epic when I'm older " and sure enough this happened.
like realistically you don't remember all the hours they put you in class where you didn't know what was going on, felt social pressures from hell or thought you were dying when you were in a car and about to puke your guts out.

You are already happiness you don't need to go out and look for an external source to maintain being happy it's in our nature to be happy but the world likes to depend on the physical aspect of everything when nothing is truly even physical down to the atoms. Everything is a vibrating frequency that's very slow and appearing to be still. Everything lies in your mind and how you create the reality in it because life is simply a dream we take to serious🌬

Isn’t the whole idea of the premise ‘life is a journey’ that it is the journey that matters, NOT the destination? The journey being the experience of being alive, failing, learning new things, evolving of relationships and enjoying the world around you. If anything, this whole speech actually reinforces the idea of life as a journey. Kind of misleading title, I don’t think it matches the points that are made in this speech at all.

    • @awonderfulfeeling8588
      @awonderfulfeeling8588 4 года назад +122

Yeah, this whole video is basically just an opinion from one famous person. Life is so complex that it fools us into thinking that it's simple. But it's not, certainly not simple enough to sum up into a speech that's less than 5 minutes long. We all have our own opinions and our own outlooks on life and this certainly does not support mine in the slightest. Like I said, life is not simple enough for someone to just sum it up in the matter or less than 5 minutes. Even if the speech is filled with pretty drawings and an end quote anyone who busts their ass in the real world to make a living would love to hear. The reality is, if you don't make money, you're not gonna survive long enough to see the pretty sunset at the end of the video. Cash is king and this video is more of an escape from reality than anything else. Of course work is boring to literally everyone on the planet, but what happens to your quality of life when you're living under a bridge begging for money because you just wanted to do literally NOTHING ELSE but enjoy yourself and watch the sunset. That's reality. We all want sunshine and roses but the real sunshine and roses are the positivity and kindness you carry with you everywhere you go and whatever you do. Life doesn't start when you quit your job and stop climbing the corporate ladder, life starts when you realize how good you have it because you're not living under a bridge and you have a beautiful home with a beautiful wife and beautiful children that you can afford to raise with the money you work hard to earn because you don't get paid to just sit on your ass. Well I guess in 2020 that's a different story...

I think what you're thinking of is what people mean when they say "life is a journey." Life shares many similarities with journey, but the philosopher's whole point was that an analogy to music provides us with a better understanding. The analogy between life and music is far more exact than the analogy between life and journey. And by being an inexact analogy to life one can very easily argue life is not a journey. But that doesn't make it wrong to say life is like a journey. It's a bit semantic, but hopefully that makes sense.

@@awonderfulfeeling8588 He is not saying you should only live in the moment, he is saying you should remember what is actually important to you. Here is a different take on the same thought that might work better for you: life is like a Ressource management game, where you try to convert time into happiness as efficiently as possible. For most people a big part of that is having a job to get money, just make sure you don't loose sight of the real goal, so you end up optimizing the amount of money instead of happiness.
BTW, It is not a given that everyone find their job boring, here in Denmark we are reasonably good at focusing on what kids would like to work with when helping them pick an education/career and about 80% say they would keep their job even if they won a huge lottery and had no financial need to work.

Its not the destination or the end it is the journey that counts. The journey is hard or easy depending on what you choose. If you choose the easy path you will never grow but you will be happy. If you want to grow to archive things you have not known (mainly to know thy self) then be ready for a hard journey because you will need to do things that you are uncomfortable with like having and raising a family and working with society to make it better. By doing these things you grow and learn. Or, you can just float through life never putting down roots with any thing, any one or any place and have fun but achieve nothing. Play at life or work life. The red pill or the blue pill it is your choice.

The songs you sing, the runs you run, the kites you fly, the people you laugh with, the stories you hear, the tales you tell to inspire, the dreams you have at night, the pets you adopt, the plant you finally managed to keep alive, the dinner that finally tasted good, the feeling of hopefulness, of gratitude, of amazement. Good point, but that song is called "I'm Only Sleeping". An even more cosmic Beatle song can be found on the same album (Revolver) -- it's called "Tomorrow Never Knows":
Turn off your mind, relax, and float down stream
It is not dying, it is not dying
Lay down all Thought, surrender to the Void
It is shining, it is shining
If you may see the meaning of within
It is Being, it is Being
That ignorance and hate they mourn the dead
It is Believing, it is Believing
That Love is all that Love is everyone
This is knowing, this is knowing
All plays the Game: "Existence" to the end
Of the beginning, of the beginning, of the beginning...
Or even "I Am The Walrus":
I am He as you are He and you are me and we are all together.
Even John Lennon backed off writing: I am Him as you are Him, and you are me...etc.
I think "Elohim" originally meant "our Higher Selves"

As was pointed out in schooloflife, this leads to an impression that love is no more deserved than the sum of ones achievements. I just enjoy a simple homely life, it’s taken me all these years and videos like this for me to accept myself for exactly who I am and realise it’s okay to live a simple life. If you don’t travel or earn a lot of money like society says you have to now it’s okay, just do what ever you want to do, there is no race or competition. Example. Have you asked any kids today about 9/11? When it’s taught in school the teachers are only allowed to talk about what’s in the book. Not allowed to speak on what they saw. It’s censoring kids from reality. So there for modeling how they want the child to think. Government does not want a mass of people thinking for themselves. They’d be out of work.
