exquisite. What a breath of fresh air. There have been way too many young violinists who just keep vibrato-ing their way through everything they play. What superb tone this lovely young woman is blessed with.
This is an excellent interpretation, in my opinion. Definitely much more dramatic, musically, than I've heard before, and she definitely brings a lot of passion into the performance.
Sencillamente increible la version de esta gran violinista; Janine.Jansen demuestra un dominio absoluto de la tecnica y su musicalidad es fuera de serie.Un Gran Aporte al repertorio de Virtuosos.Muchas Gracias!!!
I am not a professional musician but I love classic music with all my heart, and no need for me to have logic in analyzing her movement, just listening to her I can tell you she plays damn well better than many I've heard, there is a transition between the sounds that is done with commanding performance.
regarding her movements: the reason why Janine is considered one of the greatest living violinists today is that she doesn't just play the music straight, she lives the music. she's completely consumed by it and therefore gives stunning performances because it comes from within, not just from moving her hands up and down on a violin like some others play. watching a documentary recently, even when listening to music she has eyes shut and moves around too as she absorbs it. she's a musical genius
I think she can't avoid the movements she does because she is completely posesed by the music and actually I don't think she needs to avoid them... She feels every note and for me that's the most important. I LOVE this performance!!!!!
Omg at exactly 8:00 minutes she does the most lovely amazing and perfect down bows that I can't even begin to comprehend the lady is amazing and although I have never seen her in person I feel just as graced and honored to listen to her over youtube.
Like Nicole Horn I have to cry of joy!!! Mouth face head body hands and instrument all in one and one for all. It doesn't make sense, but proud to be dutch, it feels so near. Sorry for that folks
As unwatchable as Joshua Bell but superb to listen to. Those who criticize her personal appearance and style have a right to do so - watching a violinist should not detract from the experience. You would have to look back to the older romantic era violinists like Elman and Heifetz to see musicians who didn't need to sway, dance, or grimace to play incredible music. I would even argue that their sound was better because they channeled all their energy into the only parts that matter on a violin.
I am so completly embarresed to say I have never heard of this violinist, but she is absolutely phenominal, the emotion is tear jerking outstanding performance.
Not only she plays with great expressiveness, she virtually leads the orchestra through the conductor. Those who don't like her movements of facial expressions haven't been on a stage being the best for the public. When I listen Janine I hear more than music; I don't hear a violin accompanied by an orchestra, I hear the whole body of sounds as the composer most likely envisioned this music. Furthermore, I've been able to follow the scores and she adheres to the composers markings, dynamics, etc.
Judging from the reaction of the audience here, I would say those of you who find fault with JJ's performances are obviously in a pitiful minority. The woman is amazing, her movements show passion and expression..........AND, I doubt if there is a much better way to get all that music out of that 1727 Stradivari "Barrere". Play on, JJ! The critics are too few to matter! peace
I do not know their comments, but part of being an artist is entertaining the crowd, obtaining the connection with the public is done with moving and expression. I do not think this is the case here but there is something to say for expression and movement in a live performance.
I swear she played Meditation during this concert, and now I can't find it. Her performance is just brilliant, but that piece always hits me directly in the soul. Amazing talent and skill.
It is "unsurpassed!!! Better to execute, on my modest opinion, simply not maybe!!!! As emotionally, musically, what co-operating with the orchestra!!! Of genius! )) So easily and naturally at Janin all turns out, that is sometimes folded the impression, that she plays, so to say, "with a supply". I am fanaticism of this fantastic girl.)) Bravissimo all, including to the mister to the conductor with an orchestra!!!!!!!!!!))))
Sorry to say, not in top form over here... Weird timing. If you listen to fi. her "Lark ascending", also audible on youtube, it's much more convincing. Thanks for posting anyway! ----------------------------- Rolf, Netherlands. I am a collector of classical 78's and lp's Click "otterhouse" above to see (and hear!) some of my collection. (Gioconda de Vito, Berl Senofsky, Vlado Perlemuter, Carl Schuricht, Gina Bachauer etc)
Fantastic performance, yet I think you should've shown a bit more caring when uploading this, like replacing the punctuation marks with spaces, and writing the composer's name right: Saint-Saëns.
couldn't agree with u more Dogaradodia. I absolutely loved it. Check out around min 05:01 or so how she anticipates the shifts and it sounds almost like a dotted 32nd note pick up to the actual note. I like it's the first time I hear that. Anyhow, this is just a tiny observation that I find interesting and new. There so much that I can say but in synthesis I LOVE IT!
She is tense, look at her neck, her right site. A student of Kogan Evgenia Maria Popova repeated his words: Who moves a lot on stage is tensed up. Sorry guys, nice sound but she won't be long on stage if she doesn't change... By the way it is for the same reason why you don't hear anything from Vengerov anymore - really great musician, but very exhausting performances.
@Citan1981 I was wondering the same thing. LOL.. anyway... She is famous because she plays great and most of all she is a very very unique and HUMBLE musician, Thank God :)
It's just how she plays if you don't like it then don't watch/listen to it. You spend you time degrading and harassing people who enjoy this and it's completely unnecassary. And at that level you can't truely compete anymore,. Now they just play. Yes I understand the stuggle but honestly I'm the best violist in my school and I don't really compete there but I am competeting for a spot in the New York Honors orchestra so I do have plenty of experience. Try 7 years. You don't seem to have much
I see nothing wrong with her movement. Just look at Joshua Bell's movements. He moves like a maniac but he sounds amazing although I do prefer Janine's interpretations on most songs. She is great and should not model herself after anyone. Sarah Chang is a fantastic player but she is not perfect. She uses her bow much like a saw and she has a few wild movements as well! Music isn't a competition. If you are into that then I suggest you watch sports and stop writing negative comments
I wouldn't say she's dancing at all. she's setting a mood that matches the playfulness and seriousness of the piece when required. all violinist have their own forms of expressing the music (there's a musician there, not just an instrument). A performance is as much a visual show as it is audible. Honestly to watch her move around this way probably give the audience a more in-depth interpretation of the piece. Movement and musical go hand in hand, its surprising ppl haven't caught on yet :/
I am thinking...maybe a couple of you need to pour some aged scotch into a snifter, plug in JJ playing The Meditation and just kinda chill out. Then, come back here and start over. I, too, am "the audience", not a professional musician. Soooo...she moves around alot. So what. That is just her way, I suppose. The music is enormously beautiful and that, I digress, is why we are here in the first place :)Have a nice day :)
Dear young friend. I am pleased to make your virtual acquaintance. Matter of good taste is not a school of thought. Children need to be taught what constitutes good taste, musical etiquette. Unfortunately, in most cases, they are not, because of the false perception of "freedom of expression". I wish I could answer to you privately, but I do not know how to do it in my age. Very gifted Miss Jansen is not cheap by any means; yet her genuine musicality suffers from cheapening effects.
No, worse than mc meal. Inappropriate slides, exaggerations, non-stop mannerisms. Examples:00:52 - inappropriate tempo change accompanied by an unnecessary, wild bodily movement;1:27-wrong ("expressive") rhythm, 1:32 (?), 1:37 (bad gliss); the whole refrain is in poor taste, with slamming, distortions, etc. I don't think one can learn about good good taste on youtube. It is much more substantial task requiring time and effort. I only wish this very talented violinist wouldn't cheapen herself
Why should she, Janine Jansen, care about your opinion when you're the only one being vocal about the "horrible grimaces"? I prefer Janine Jansen's interpretation on some violin concertos, in my opinion. This does not mean I don't like Sarah Chang or Hilary Hahn just because I don't prefer to listen to their interpretation on some pieces.
How can you tell that you play violin better than me? That seems rather arrogant of you to say so. Why are you so against facial expressions and body movements during a performance? Would you rather prefer to watch a robot play an instrument, or would you rather watch a human being express his or her emotions while playing an instrument?
Haha name calling?! Really name calling?? I guess we are back in elementary school. But you want a critique? This performance is outstanding! Janine may not use all of the usual basic techniques but no one truely does. There are some moments where her bow speed and placement do not co-exist which makes some not sound sloppy but this by far is the best MUSICAL interpretation
@sirus804 Heifetz may not sway and move, but even he has a way of holding himself as he plays (and an expression that gives the piece his own voice) that is unique to him, so in SEEING Heifetz perform, one would expect that visual representation. I could go further to say without it, one might be disappointed in seeing him perform..
Oh my gosh. If you knew what you were talking about you wouldn't have said that. If she is playing outside, with nothing for the sound to travel off of, and still hundreds of people to play for, then YOU'RE GOING TO HEAR SURFACE NOISE! You try playing outside where the sound will practically evaporate into thin air.
I know I will be crucified here, but I cannot not say it: she looks good and has good sound, but -- such poor taste. In how she moves and also what she does with this good music. It is not some gypsy quasi porno tune after all. All these inappropriate slides, and her non-stop mannerisms. I guess, I am not a fan.
what i ment to say, its that its brilliant. lets see then, how would one put that in to words, sorry. you have a point. clearly not what i was trying to say. i mean the whole think is great and the parts that mention as my favorite. lets see then, so "you could have never gone any more wrong" then says its bad. in the bad way, so how cold i phrase that so be in the good way.
Yes it would. Looks have nothing to do with the tone you produce. Ida Haendel is almost if not 80 and she has one of the most beautiful sounds. Saying that if a fat person were to be playing this that it wouldn't sound beautiful just shows your ability to listen to the musical aspect of this piece, which is none whatsoever.
Oh..............here's our lady with an obsession again........our CaraBrimleyRules.......by the way who is a fantastic violinist, probably without any expression on her face while playing. I'm looking everywhere on youtube..........can't find a performance of the lady that rules
best performance, ever: 1:28 - whaaaaaa? is that really how it goes? 1:43 - seriously guys? seriously? do i need to show you how to play? 2:02 - come on guys, put some passion into it...like me 2:14 - oops I spasmed, twice, but it sounded normal! heh heh 2:37 - stupid, pesky nose itch...
@vibratingstring when the tone of a legitimate argument like this one is lowered by irrelevent comments it makes it hard to take the points made on that side of the discussion seriously. come on vibratingstring lets have some more ,pertinent arguments on the subject.
Fantastic playing I have to say (though I wish she wouldn't float in the "p" sections) but yes...the dancing is offputting and I think like all bad physical habits on the violin should be avoided. if you think it helps watch Milstein or Szeryng, Oistrakh,Fournier,Menuhin,Heifetz...need i go on.?
The violin is not supposed to shake with a vibrato. If it does you're not doing it properly - the muscle web between your thumb and rest of your hand is probably too stiff. Rock hand against thumb with a relaxed thumb shaft, and your vibrato should smooth out.
Hey, it's a different school of though, the fact that you wouldn't play it like that doesn't make it "cheap" or "inappropriate". Because I assume you can play it after all that you said. I found it very expressive and original, not cheap at all.
So peeps complaining about her posture and dancing? Do you know it requires energy to play like that? Play it like a stump, surely youll get a stump like performance. 25 dislikes, 25 idiots with no taste. Legendary performance!
@vibratingstring Your arrogance is breathtaking and you are very offensive, As a professional violinist I am well within my field of expertise in this discussion. You are not . The only embarrasment you should have is for yourself.
this is a great performance, I can nitpick and say that her high notes during the arpeggios were a little sloppy (the three runs before the tripple stops the segued to the final alleggro) She articulates very well.
@death0personified You are so right, my friend! I'm sure the great composers enjoyed dancing as much as anyone! Physical expression of music was (is) just as important as the music itself, imho. peace
way too much attack and spiccatto, some notes don't even sound, far to aggressive for st saens, recently heard a brilliant performance of this by James Ehnes, same tempo, however much clearer and concise.
Bravo... You should be teaching how to play this to Anne Akiko Meyers!!! Look at the site counter ...more than 100x Anne Akiko Meyers' performance. I bet you'r not playing a $3.6M violin.
@jcg1227 I agree, but Bell moves too much however. His recordings are good, but I just can't stand watching videos of him because he moves WAY TOO MUCH!! XD Jansen seems to have the balance right :)
shes so rough.. slops over things..and totally butchers the rhythms. listen to perlman if you want to hear it played properly. i give her 4 stars just because of her 3 million dollar strad's sound.
I want people to stop righting in other language. We should be able to understand each other's comments, so all comments in spanish, or german, or french, or whatever. All comments in English!!! Otherwise i will delete them!!!
Prachtig/Beautiful Is it posible to put this video again on RUclips in HD format? I'll would be very pleased with it and I'll think many others! Gretings from Holland
Why does she remind me of Mutter? Hm. Maybe the exaggeration? No doubt she's a good violinist. But I don't really like this overly passionate style. It's just a matter of taste, I guess.
@DigitalDNA well, I wouldn't say legendary... she's OK overrated as many these days! Type Sergey Krilov Saint saens Gala 13 09 09 to see a great performance of the piece.
i love how she mimes the music with facial expressions.. it helps make the music more meaningful... or would that be more like distracting? LOL!! I tjoke ^^;;;
@death0personified Exactly. Its art. If people wanted to hear music, let them buy a bloody album of hers or something. Each day people losing taste toward expression and art.
@mrwasbesonders Sorry all you folks who seem to compare music, musicians, performances and pieces as if they RAM cards in a computer to be swapped in and out when you need more "go". After playing violin for over 38 years, I can personally tell anyone that once you start becoming one with any instrument, the two of you are "ALIVE" together and it can only be experienced, not described in words. Try telling someone what an orange tastes like without using the word orange. Only eating one does it!
Hetfetz ea were musicians of a different era in which freedom in self expression was much less accessible than nowadays. Our attention to the body, to feeling, emotion, is also heightened and the body is more considered to be a field of experience that is essential in personal growth and spirituality. I would tend to say that the thesis that music can better be expressed when the mind is directing and as little as possible of the body vibrates, moves, lives with the musical stream, is outdated.
As the owner of this video I would like to ask every single person to stopping leaving offensive comments to Janine's performance. You may express you thoughts but do it respectful and bahave as an adult. I'd like to ask you to stop being rude to each other's comments. I believe we are all civilized peopele.
This is the best performance I've heard since the Michael Rabin recording.
Neeme Järvi es sencillamente adoraaaaaable! Bravoo
her interpretation is out of this world. So much emotion and fiery passion. I would've killed to be at this concert.
This was dazzling. Thank you for sharing it!
Quanto sentimento demonstrado musicalmente.Parabens Janine, parabens à orquestra.
Perfection!!
I love her dynamics and passion.
Brilliant work!
I love the emotional expressiveness. Technically, it is superb. That's what this piece should be. Thanks for posting this.
This is probably one of the best violin performances in youtube. Great and beautifull Janine.
M A G I S T R A L !!!!!! J'en ai même pleuré tellement c'est beau snif
What a great performance!
Thank you for posting!
I love how she get into the piece with her expressions and gestures. BRAVA!!!!
personne ne s'y trompe...cet enregistrement est exeptionnel!! parce que le soliste et l orchestre sont en phase!!! ca decoiffe, mais quelle justesse d interprétation!

Yep, that's a pownage all right...
--No doubt-- this is the best version so far......plus she looks fun to cuddle with...
seriously, she is truely the best.
wow, you NEVER hear people play like this anymore. Seriously awesome.
Wow !!!

I am so completly embarresed to say I have never heard of this violinist, but she is absolutely phenominal, the emotion is tear jerking outstanding performance.
Janine Jansen is the Jacqueline Dupre of the violin.
In a nutshell.. Janine Jansen is wonderful!!!!!
Because it is a romantic piece, she has more liberty with timing and phrasing--the beauty of the romantic period.
omg, this piece... its just ... breathtaking... the more I listen to it.. the more I envy Saint-Saens. A genius whos talent was comparible near Bach.
I keep coming back to this performance, this is incredible
Who dared to dislike this!? Oh, I'm betting Justin Bieber fans.
her interaction with the conductor and orchestra and audience is unbelievable, so lively and gets them into the piece.
Excuse me, but so good playing and so funny face )
Judging from the reaction of the audience here, I would say those of you who find fault with JJ's performances are obviously in a pitiful minority. Merveilleuse Janine Jansen transcendante elle a le coeur dans son violon c'est unique. Le violon a été créé pour elle.
Bare vakkert!
very very well performed played with so much passion
bravo the Dutch can be proud of an artist of this level
We are!
I seriously love her bow work. Also love the way she puts panache into it.
Impecable rendition, Superb !!!!!!!

Prachtig/Beautiful
Is it posible to put this video again on RUclips in HD format?
I'll would be very pleased with it and I'll think many others!
Gretings from Holland
Why does she remind me of Mutter? Hm.
Maybe the exaggeration?
No doubt she's a good violinist. But I don't really like this overly passionate style. It's just a matter of taste, I guess.
@DigitalDNA
well, I wouldn't say legendary... she's OK overrated as many these days! Type Sergey Krilov Saint saens Gala 13 09 09 to see a great performance of the piece.
i love how she mimes the music with facial expressions.. it helps make the music more meaningful... or would that be more like distracting? LOL!! I tjoke ^^;;;
Of course, viola jokes that I've heard a million time before. For 24, you don't seem to have matured at all. Probably not very successful I suppose.
OMG
She generates much tension to anyone listening, if not anxious over her wrestling with the violin. Is she endeavoring to strangle it ?!!
By the way, the comment below, or above, wherever it appears, is a response to "qrst2008" who is very fussy on the subject of "taste".
