I asked a Park Ranger one time if there are alligators in Village Creek and she told me No. They don't like Village Creek because it is spring fed, in part, and springs are cold. They love the shallow warm adjoining sloughs and oxbows. When the creek is low they will move into the creek as the springs dry up to look for food. By the way Great Video! I love it. I go to the Big Thicket often.
I grew up in that area and have since moved out as an adult. Although I love the Appalachian Mtns and they feel like home to me. I wish I had been mature enough to enjoy the natural beauty of East Texas when I was there. I’ll need to go back for a visit sometime.
Great video! Village creek is a really nice park, but very close to a railroad. If you’re a light sleeper, it will wake you up early in the morning. Also, I’m not sure when this particular video was filmed, but both the big thicket and village creek have hurricane damage and parts of both parks are closed. The turkey creek (big thicket) bridge is damaged and the village creek primitive camp area is damaged and as of now (Dec 2019) those areas are close. The parks are still both open to enjoy however. I’ve hiked and tent camped both parks and would highly recommend it. Turkey creek trail is a one way trail ands roughly 15 miles with a couple of place to drop water and you can backcountry camp. Village creek has several trails, up to about 5 miles that are very pretty, but you can only camp on established sites since it’s a state park.
What would you do? Tent camp along the trail, or park your RV nearby and take day hikes?
Texas Escapist, I am headed out there in a few weeks to hike and primitive camp. Thanks for the recon of the trail!
You're welcome! Hope you enjoy it!
Neither. Too many people killed there.
Linda Lee , who is getting killed out there?
