Somehow I came across this video today in 2023 and I am so loving this version! Marcus and his super gang, Hiram and Kenny Garrett, not to mention the other cool members (wish I knew their names) ! WOW!! Best version- you are RIGHT!
Marcus is more than just technique, he has soul/rhythm/feeling/articulation/note placement/ a monster tone. and his slap atyle is efficient. Not a lot of wasted movement. He is more than show. Moreso than a lot of slappers he has substance. ask any cat who can slap for real
C'mon FOLKS! Marcus can Play, and the way we ALL play is as unique and as different as OUR FINGERPRINT! Marcus, like a lotta cats could use some work, as He is hooked in to the Clique of cats thats constantly gigging, as the rest is illusion. Just remember when you use Picstacotto you don't let your G string Execution Overshadow your open E Thumb syncopation, or Overplay. What Marcus is doing is COOL, believe me, but I was doing that the first 4 months I was playing; good showman; Alot of hype.
More guitar players need to study Hiram. He is a great example of a guitar player under control. It is so tempting to want to take over as a guitar player, but he always serves the music. R.I.P
Marcus and Roger Sadowsky worked on his 70's Jazz bass years ago to install an active circuit preamp to replace the fender passive setup. Sadowsky chose to use a modified preamp by "Stars guitars"that was available at the time, and this was the birth of the Marcus miller sound. Of course his percussive style adds to the attack, but the individuality of the Marcus Miller style comes from those 2 hands of his. . . (and Roger Sadowsky kinda got a good idea from doing this modification).
Actually, the sound comes from several different things. Technique is first, you can sound good on any bass if you have your technique down. After that, you need really good pickups, certain pickups were made for certain sounds in a guitar. Then comes the amplifier. If you want to sound anything Marcus, you need a well balanced amp with good high and low frequencies. With a good combination of technique, pickups, and an amp, you will sound great. I know from lots of experience.
@loukana I agree. It's all how you play an instrument, not the "rep" it gets from magazine reviewers; likewise, a shitty student fender can be made to play just like the highest end gibson. it just takes the heart. remember that, kids.
@ Loukana and all viewers who's perception may be similar, check out the youtube video of Marcus Miller w/ Miles Davis. He is a beast at fingerboard technique. Sometimes when listening to his recordings, it is difficult for me to detect when he's playing fingerboard style and when he's popping and slapping.
About 15% of his sound are in the equipment, max. This guy could play a rusty wire strapped to piece of plywould and would still sound better than any of us playing good equipment. Don't believe me? Watch Benny Greb on a Spongebob drumset for kids sound better than 99% of all drummers on their expensive sets. It's on youtube, look it up.
And KEY: Thick lacquer on that neck! That's a big part of that extreme clarity. Also, he plays through very clean amps and cabs. Don't expect this clarity from an Ampeg! Hehe.
i agree. something about his playing style here seems way too loose, especially when he gets to the solo. Love the aggressive and tight playing of his older versions more.
the technique but slap is a hard technique to get a really good sound so you'll be probably only 2 years getting a good sound and still working on it but you can't really slap with any bass like i play an ibanez at school but a fender 70's jazz bass at home and the sound of the slap on the fender is 100000000 times better than on that shitty ibanez
Of course , it's nice , but I prefere Run for Cover with David Sanborn , at this song I don't like kenny garret because when you ever heard run for cover with David Sanborn , you know that he has the only really feeling / sound for this song !

this is my favorite run for cover performance
Kenny Garrett on sax, Patches Stewart on trumpet, Poogie Bell on the kit, Hiram on the guitar...what a band Marcus had.

The best Marcus performance of all time. Hiram KILLS it with the dance moves lol. I have the whole concert and it is great!
The best line up!
for me, Marcus's music was better in early years, than it's now. he and his music was more full with feelings, than it's now...

Love it. Bass sound is amazing.

Marcus Miller Composed this song on David Sanborn's album

BEEFY TONE! Thick, meaty sounding punch! Slapping like Rocky punching a side of beef!
And KEY: Thick lacquer on that neck! That's a big part of that extreme clarity.

I want to get a bass guitar and I was wondering is it the bass or the technique that makes it sound really good with slapping?
I am currently working on this song. Marcus Miller is a genius. It might take me awhile just to get the timing right
@markdlowe you have a point. :D
Thanks :D

You are wrong. Whatever the bass you play on, you have better sound if you play with Human Fingers Marcus Miller Signature.

I recorded it too, check it! :)
Gotta run for rover before I get slapped by that nasty ass bass
