As for this performance...it's breathtaking, the sound, the mood, the funkyness....Miller is a sensual musical beast and what a way to collaborate with your band mates...he gives them so much space and credit, and when they come together playing the theme they are spot on. Fantastic.
Too tight, and extremely funky, that cut was. way more funkier than three days I once spent with some more brothers in the field where we had no soap & water until we returned to the rear, we didn't even let the truck park. Olympic 60 meter sprinting to the showers with soap!!! (Tales from a grunt not the hood!!!)
Every god damn time I hear this.. How anyone could sit and listen and not just groove along is beyond me. This is beyond a work of art, this is the embodiment of art.
I like it funked up. I have to say the trumpet player blew everyone away on this tune. Who is he? Killer!! Imagine seeing him 10 feet from you in a small club, blowing like that? Wow!
The difference between Marcus and 99% of other even great bassists like say Wooten is that his tone is always impeccable, his timing is unmatched and he can hold a stinky sick groove with just a few notes. He wasnt invited to play on more than 500 albums just for his funky hat! One of the greats!
They're all amazingly talented players! Not a cover but a definite addition & I never get tired of listening to it as it sounds like a celebration to life!! . An original in itself.
I was a witness to this particular Marcus Miller aggregation performing this off the charts version of Mr. Davis composition. Marcus Miller has and would always be ON THE ONE.
As you know. at 1959, Miles Davis had composed the music tune titled "so what". And it was played by legendary Miles Davis sextet which was possessing Bill Evans and John Coltrane. Miles Davis had adopted the church scale called D dorian on behalf of the equal temperament into it. And many a Jazz fan had comprehended that "so what" is one of the most excellent Jazz tunes on the modern jazz history. This time, I have to say that "so what "played by Murcas Miller group is pretty nice. The bass sounds which is playing D dorian scale is so thrilling, Moreover the combination between the trumpet and the sax is very attractive. In other words, They have brought an another charm which differs from Miles Davis sextet.
the trumpet player's amazing... technically perfect, but when I think about Miles' original solo on this one, its delicacy and apparent simplicity make everything else pale in comparison
@CptChaos88 VICTOR PLAYS FAST? ARE YOU INSANE? WOOTEN PLAYS FAST BUT WITH AN IMMENSE SENSE OF MUSIC, incase you didn't notice, you are a disrespect to music if you say so.
@CptChaos88 his work on bela fleck and the flecktones when he does the bass lines they have a lot of feeling too, and a few covers he does when he put more feelings than the originals songs so please dont say that victor only play fast, sorry for my poor english...
@CptChaos88 why all people say victor only play fast? is not true, the people who say that is because they only have saw few videos of victor, he has a lot of songs with a long of feeling, marcus is great yeah but victor too, watch more love, his amazing grace solo, us 2, Some Times I Laugh etc etc,
hey bongoedbass go to everyone of millers vids and look with ur eyes and ears and tell me what is so astonishing about his bass playin, everything he does for solos are the same he slaps and not great at it i might add. if ur name is bongoed then use ur fukn ears if ur a muso .it still doesnt change the fact that he cant fukn play. he gets by because he reads charts.get back to me when youve seen all his vids, alright......einstein
I love all the race comments on here. im a white bassist and had the incredible opportunity to play with Mr. Poogie Bell last month. It was incredible. and i bet if you called him and asked him how it went there would never be a mention of race directed at either side. Marcus is to smart of a musician to bring race into the equation for picking his band. All it would do would limit the potential of what he could do.
@dixxjamm Yes I am a white jazz guitarist myself. Thanks for the music history lesson, I am well aware of these things you mention, no need to lecture me. I'm just saying that guitarist IS a dork and stands out from the other cooler guys, especially next to Marcus. You've gone on way too deep a tangent for what it's worth. I don't care what colour people are, it's just a matter of consistency - you dig?
@upT3mpo You're wrong,my friend,if you studied your musical history, you'll notice influential pianists like Chick Corea and Bill Evans, guitarists like John Scofield, bass players like Jaco Pastorious, drummers like Colaiuta, ans so on.They are all kinda white and they hold their ground against black musicians and they do bring their "whiteness" to the mix, though they'll be the first to admit that there would be no jazz, blues, funk or rock without blacks and I agree.Do you even play an instrument?
@upT3mpo Has it ever occured to you that the reason Miller chose this formula is BECAUSE they are white and they bring WHITE things to the mix...there is enough blackness and funk in him, the drummer and the horn section...it's what open-minded artists do sometimes, get people of different backgrounds and ethnicitity to expand their music...Miles Davis, Prince, Sly Stone have done it, who are you to judge ??
@jqd5 please read my second comment below this one. i said it was a joke. J O K E. I know that victor is an incredibly soulful player. check out his jams with carter beauford for example. but the tendency is right i guess; at least it isn't wrong. even marcus sais that: "will you ever do an instructional video?" - Marcus : "no. just play the victor wooten one at half speed ;-)"
@drg92asturias yeah but i know them as well. what i said was a joke. still i prefer marcus style cause in my mind it's a more musical style and i just prefer the music he does compared to the flectones. it's just funkyer and more jazzy while the flectones are very experimental and "bluegrassy". but when I started playing bass like 9 or 10 years ago, victor was THE big influence on playing bass for me. because of him I learned so much and so many great musicians. no disrespect here. cheers.
@JavieRegaladoBass i am pretty familiar with his playing. his DMB solo isn't fast at all, too. and yes he is a great soulfull player and for me, as a bassist he's as well as marcus stanley and jaco and all the others a great inspiration and maby the greatest teacher. but what I say is that marcus is a better composer when it comes to songs and arrangements (in my mind). and I didn't say that he plays ONLY fast. and btw: marcus was asked if he'd do an instructional video and he said: play the
I always say that THERE ARE wrong notes in jazz, in the same sense there is bad sex....in most situations, people can't actually pinpoint exactly what they disliked in somebody they slept with, but they can definitely say they hated it or that it was average. Same here with jazz, in theory everything goes, but in practice, augmented by taste and mood, you KNOW what you like. For ex., I despise J. McLaughlin, with some exceptions, and I kinda know why.
You say that Marcus sucks because he always uses slap, and not trying to bring down Jaco but you say he was the greatest yet he always used fingerstyle. Might I add that Marcus also plays piano, saxophone, clairinet, and guitar, so I'd say he's a pretty well-rounded and talented musician.
@Parvenu333 "So what" has recorded originally on Miles' 1956 album "Kind of Blue". Much better version than this one, this is pop compared to that (in my oppinion, of course). Anyway, I love Miller's works, and this is a good cover of the original. Kind of pop-funk-jazz.
It was originally on the rickenbacker bass, and was actually part of the magnetics of the pickup. On fender basses, it's actually just more for cosmetic purposes. James Jamerson used it to anchor his ring and pinky finger while playing with his famous "hook."
well, bassist always be a bassist. means, rhythm keeper, supportive type. not a lead player like guitarist or pianist and any other else. marcus is an icon, no, genius player when he play supportive, not as leader. but, its his soul. not mine to told.
The guitarists name is dean Brown, and just so you know these guys have been this bad since they were teenagers. I remember seeing Marcus in high school doing teen town on the lunchroom table, and the first band Poogie played in, I was the trumpet player
Anybody that is still wondering what the pickup cover was originally intended as, look up horseshoe magnets, Rickenbacker. It was originally used to create a magnetic field that the strings would vibrate through in the 1930's.
@bringupthebass Only limited people would think to throw around the race card in this instance. Marcus is far from race-oriented when it comes to his bands, and everyone knows it! Geez, get a life!
not only marcus I love the drummer groove ...this is a team performance !!! music is about sharing feelings and emotion saxo, trumpet, keyboard everybody push it ....
@ivvawa the drummer is crying.... Why? Because you play with Marcus Miller or others also fantastic musician???? excuse me for the my bad english...i am italian beginner drummer.....
It was an appropriate response to a completely stupid question. Marcus Miller is one of the best bass players alive. If you had a little experience listening to music, you'd know this.
Awesome performance of a classic song. I hope all of this color stuff is sarcasm. You can't hear color; talent and groove comes from inside, not the outside (skin).
@Parvenu333 its a jazz-funk fusion. thats one, two, marcus was a master of jazz. he played bass for miles davis. go listen to that and tell me he's not a master of jazz.
what is that metal thing on his bass? what does it do? ive been playing bass for years now but no one has ever explained to me what that its my bass doesnt have one.
Thanks for posting this clip! I'm gonna pull out my DVD now!! hahaha! Sometimes we tend to forget just how much nasty groove Marcus has when just playing supportive bass stuff! FUNKY!!

That trumpet intro is Cold bloodied........Nice piece to all of you. And yes. That organ was cold too........
I agree. trumpet is michael patches stewart
Reminded me of Freddie Hubbard
Agreed that trumpet playa set the stage!!!
that organ was mean as hell. ever hear someone groove so hard that your first instinct is to make a stank face????
Davis Wright Nice f××king B-3!! Reminds me of Larry Young……
Aww this groove is too painful!! :D Delicious!
Trumpet solo is simply magical!
I agree. trumpet is michael patches stewart
Nice funk-jazz version of an all time excellent tune... Marcus Miller makes it look SO easy...thank you!
Too tight, and extremely funky, that cut was. way more funkier than three days I once spent with some more brothers in the field where we had no soap & water until we returned to the rear, we didn't even let the truck park. Patches Stewart on trumpet
I am new to Jazz. This is the first time that I have heard this played with a groove rather than a walking bass line. So cool!!
Welcome to fusion-jazz, funk-jazz, jazzrock. 😉
Love this rendition of "So What" I've revisited so many times--musicians off the chart!! If you don't like this, you have to be dead.
Miles would be proud.
Gerard Gutiérrez Collado Miles might say “I already did that.“& make a certain smile……I know , it's a silly assumption.
Miles is proud!
No doubt.
Wow... I am in love with the bass!!!!! THat ish penetrates my spirit!
Miles always wanted to move on ahead..but he would approve of this interpretation...the sax and trumpet are mind blowing.

Everything sounds HUGE...the bass...trumpet...organ...drums....ahhhhhhhhhhhh....musical orgasm!
And the great Poogie Bell on drums! Incredible playing! 🎼🎶🎼
All are great musicians, do you know the name of the saxophone?

ATTENTION ATTENTION :
the JAZZ POLICE is coming
Marcus ejoys it so much :D
the best trumpet player I have heard in a long time.
That trumpet player was COOKIN’!
the trumpet player's amazing... technically perfect, but when I think about Miles' original solo on this one, its delicacy and apparent simplicity make everything else pale in comparison

who is the tenor player ?
Man, this is a very good sounding recording, especially for it being live.
@CptChaos88 VICTOR PLAYS FAST? ARE YOU INSANE?
WOOTEN PLAYS FAST BUT WITH AN IMMENSE SENSE OF MUSIC, incase you didn't notice, you are a disrespect to music if you say so.
Daryl from the office is crushing that sax
this music has so much soul!
btw mr chops of steel over there always nails them trumpet solos
and nonetheless, marcus miller is a total badass:D
@grofmontechristo Patches Stewart. He's been with Marcus for many years, great player!
the trumpet is realy great player as everyone els

Woah, this is the funkiest cover of a Miles Davis classic I have heard, really!
definately gets in the way for me. But... for marcus, it completely works. Go figure hahah
3:44 that note is wrong, buddy. glad bobby sparks is with marcus now, bobby is my hero
The one good thing about the original was the bass line, and MM got rid of it. It's not even remotely the same song.
Sax player is channeling Cornelius Bumpus, if you can dig what I mean.
Marcus is everything one could expect from a jazz player ... This tune has a little funk, a little Jazz and a little fusion ... bliss !
@CptChaos88 i dont say it was disrespected, im only saying that Victor Wooten not only play fast, that he plays music too...
Peace. :)
I'm sorry. I mean no harm whatsoever. But after the trumpet solo, the song just goes flat.
The acoustic player looks like Johnny Ramone. Great version of this classic.
Dean Brown is the guitarist
this genre makes me sick. i can't even play guitar well. they're all beast
hey bongoedbass go to everyone of millers vids and look with ur eyes and ears and tell me what is so astonishing about his bass playin, everything he does for solos are the same he slaps and not great at it i might add. if ur name is bongoed then use ur fukn ears if ur a muso .it still doesnt change the fact that he cant fukn play. he gets by because he reads charts.get back to me when youve seen all his vids, alright......einstein

Not pushing it but keeping it nice and clean crisp

@thebzooka It' Roger Byan ! Brilliant ! Don' t you think so ? 8-)) and Michael "Patches" Stewart on other brass, trompet in french, sorry !
0:36 awesome how the band sounds in that enter...

@Plissken07
Poogie Bell - drums
Dean Brown - guitar
Roger Byam - saxophone
Bruce Flowers - keyboards
Patches Stewart - trumpet
@CptChaos88 uh not hatin but listen to the lesson or sometimes i laugh or ari's eyes by victor, it's not all just fast notes.
the trumpet player murdered it as a sax player I want the sax player to kill it he could have put more feeling into it
yes it is great video..someone familiar with the trumpet player?
he plays amazing. and so all the memebers of this band.
@CptChaos88 last time I checked, both played fast and both played music. Sometimes, but not exclusively, at the same time!
not trying to sound racist in any way but i swear that black people are the best musicians! and i'm a white musician!
Fender super Bass, super potente,el resto de la banda ,exquisita e impecable!!!!
Thanks for posting this clip! I'm gonna pull out my DVD now!! hahaha! Sometimes we tend to forget just how much nasty groove Marcus has when just playing supportive bass stuff! FUNKY!!

A+ for Poogie. Laying it down, nice and simple. Only doing the fancier stuff when it calls for it. Fantastic musician.
@Parvenu333 You misunderstood me, it was kind of agree with you. I can't get your overreaction.
Have a nice day!
that's why i prefer marcus miller to victor wooten:
victor plays fast, marcus plays music.
no disrespect anyway.
if you see a rusty sax player on the stage ... ..watch out ...there might be a lot of jazz about to start ....
@CptChaos88 totalmente de acuerdo Marcus miller toca musica en cambio Victor woten solo toca rapido..no hay comparacion
PLAY DAT DAIR TRUMPETTTTT ......finally found this vid and marcus doin his thing on dat bass n da backround
Call me old fashioned...but nothing beats Paul Chambers and Bill Evans tilling the jazz landscape, with their haunting intro- interplay, from the 1959 jazz classic. Then, as if summoned from the netherworld, Miles, 'Trane, and The Cannonball each take their turn sowing the seeds of their prolific solo takes, during that history making session. Solos that have been transcribed, copied, and played for over sixty years but never eclipsed!
Just as with all other covers, while certainly good music, for me this is something else entirely. And, just as definitive for me is the fact that nothing else has nor ever will recreate the magic once produced with this opening, and hard-driving prelude through the hallowed halls of Kind of Blue.🎺🎷🎷🥁🎻🎹
🐸Miles Davis: So What❓
3:02 fucking sick guitar slide.
Whaat? When did Hargrove have a plastic surgery???
As kinshasa said he is Michael "Patches" Stewart:D
@jonsolo1038 that "long haired grunge lookin' guy" you are talkin about is guitar legend dean brown!
Marcus is always awesome,The whole group is great! but who's playing sax and trumpet?
Those 2 guys always rip it up
Good tempo on this version and good punch on the bass.
Poogie Bell! Awesome rhythm section fer sure!
it's different, but i like it. Everyone played very well. Everyone...not just main man miller.
