    So I was bored one day and started watching stargate and RA played by Jaye Davidson took my breath away. The crazy thing is I'm straight but something about Jayes presence in that movie got me hooked and I wanted to know more about him. For the rest of that day I was looking him up online and couldn't get enough of him. Their is just something about his look and acting that was of another world like he was truly an Egyptian God. He could of been huge but obviously that's not what he wanted which I respect. Another thing I liked was that he had no experience of acting but played Ra so perfectly.

    I regard this as Emmerich's best work, much due to the Ra character and Jaye Davidson's acting. Ra's features, manner of speech, and movement are all alluring. Rarely are male villains written with a seductive energy to them. It's so hard to keep my eyes off of him.

And the LGBT community is no different than that. I would never want to go back to being that pretty and androgynous boy I used to be 24yrs ago. Straight guys taste in women change over time too. So do women's taste in men. That has nothing to do with tolerance. And we all make changes to attract sexual partners. Nothing wrong with that either. I watched this as a kid and enjoyed it, but watching it again as an adult, I have so much more appreciation for Jaye as Ra. He could have been the later child for androgyny, before it even became a fad in modern pop culture.
    It’s interesting that the casting for the rest of this movie is so generic, but the casting for Ra is so out of the box-and perfect. He’s *so young,* and not traditionally masculine at all.
    He’s beautiful, and dangerous, and sensual, and powerful. And again, it’s so surprising that he played the combination of ALL of those traits so perfectly, at such a young age!
    Truly great movies are the ones you can love on a surface level as a child, and then appreciate on multiple new levels as an adult.

      @Kelmire1 5 лет назад +12

      Sorry, but the movie and the tv show are two different universes. I know the tv show tries to connect with the movie, but Ra was not a Goa-uld, nor was he Asgard. The Asgard may be slowly dying, but the movie suggests urgency - as if death for his entire race was imminent. Besides, the species ra came from looks very different from Asgardians. Not 'what they used to look like before the cloning' but rather.... a completely different species.
      I really like the tv show, but it does not hold a candle to the movie. The concepts in the movie are just superior.The idea that Ra is some mad scientist from another world in which the planet and his entire race were dying... is better than a bunch of slugs on a primitive world somehow managed to infect some species of other primitive lifeforms and then ....somehow spread throughout the galaxy? It's vague at best.
      Movie is better, hands down. Besides, as much as I love the light Star trek tone of SG-1... darker, grittier concepts like that expressed in the movie are simply more mature, more adult and far more what you would expect from the universe. Ra didn't take over Earth out of spite, or even a desire to rule. He wanted to cheat death forever and so ruling humanity just became a necessity. Sure, he became incredibly arrogant and began to see himself as a god... but underneath it all, he knew it was just propaganda -a control mechanism to ensure he has the shit he needs to survive forever.
      It's just a classic story of a scientist driven mad by loss, hellbound of gaining immortality.
      The other is...arrogant slug parasites that don't even so much as use domination as a control mechanism..but arte actually stupid enough to believe that they are gods and should be worshipped. There's a huge different. Goa-uld on their own are primitive creatures, like those things in the tv show Origins. Animalistic and nothing more.
      Ra in rthe movie? Now that's a true villain. not merely some ignorant parasite, but truly cunning and highly intelligent.
      Sorry to rant so much, but I can't help myself when people praise the tv show more than the movie. The movie was 18+ Stargate. The tv show was for a younger audience, although the nudity in the pilot episode was nice... but obviously was immediately tonned down.

    • @temporaneo617
      @temporaneo617 3 года назад +1

      @@Kelmire1 the goauld aren't really "primitive", in fact there are some that show how actually smart and advanced they actually are, with baal as the primary example. They only really enjoy playing the part of gods to technologically inferior humans, and without impending threats to their status quo they have become stagnant as a society, then add the negative effects of a prolonged usage of the sarcophagus that results in them becoming much more aggressive and their "moral compass" being corrupted and that's how they became what they are in the show. I do agree on the fact that tv show and movie are different, like they were set in alternate realities, but the huge advantage the tv show has is the incredible amount of content it has, with sg1 alone having 10 whole seasons and the whole thing having 17 seasons and 2 additional movies (3 movies if we count Origins as well, but not having seen it I can't really judge it. I heard it's awfull). There really isn't that much of a difference in depth between the movie and the tv show, and the only reason the latter feels more lighthearted is probably because of some comedic moments, which don't erase the significance of the themes being explored

    So I know im overthinking this, but as a fan of both the original movie and SG-1, something occurred to me while watching this. We can very clearly see that Ra is not a Goa'uld. Now of course this is because the writers of SG1 decided to go with that parasitic tapeworm idea instead, but what i find interesting is that not only does his form in the movie look similar to the Asgards, his story is basically the same as well; that of a dying race looking to extend their own life. So I'm thinking that he was in fact an Asgard who figured out how to transfer his consciousness into a human body. It fits since Ra was suppose to be vastly more powerful than all the other System Lords. And perhaps he decided to build ships with a different aesthetic so that the other Asgardians wouldn't realize he was actually one of their own

    • @Wonderboy46Z
      @Wonderboy46Z Год назад

      I hadn’t noticed that about him looking like an Asgard before. But it’s neat how they kind of played off the fully parasitic nature of the Goa’uld in that he claimed to have created the society which could be how they explained in SG-1 the Goa’uld and System Lords didn’t actually invent any tech but rather stole it from other civilizations and repurposed it to meet their needs. So it left the door open for the Ancients/Alteans to have come before Ra but that wouldn’t fit the normal narrative that Ra would have to tell as a god. Seems the developers of the TV show actually paid attention to the movie it was based on for once in Hollywood history, which could be why the entire Stargate franchise was so freaking awesome. Everything blended well, and intermingled perfectly for the most part. Dang I wish they would go ahead and get the reboot or whatever going at Amazon.

    I wonder how much knowledge Ra managed steal from his Asgard host. The Goauld didnt make any huge leap technologically near that time so either the blending didnt work very well and we know that's true given it nearly killed him and he desperately needed a new host it's possible no real information was gleaned. 2nd option is he learned everything he could of asgard knowledge including incredible secrets and managed to database it somewhere... but where? The information was fairly bew when the gate was opened to abydos so its likely Ra was studying all that he could but was the data stored solely on the ship that blew up over abydos which of course means its lost forever or was it sent to other computers and facilities run by his goauld underlings? The latter I imagine to be true and it's either sitting doing nothing noe the goauld were beaten or some low level snake head is scuttling around in the shadows with powerful tech that could maybe give them the advantage they need to become players in the game of....... 'The Wilky Way' 😈

    una de mis peliculas favoritas de ciencia ficcion, tambien soy amante de la cultura egipcia y su historia, igual su mitologia; me gusta mucho este personaje Ra, y Jaye Davidson lo hizo muy bien, me encanta su androginia y que es un ser a la vez joven(en su apariencia fisica)y a la vez un ser muy antiguo, aunque en lugar de ser un dios solar como lo era esta deidad en la mitologia egipcia, lo ponen como un demonio, en algunas partes es como un angel; o en este caso es como una especie de parasito o vampiro que se aprovecha de los seres humanos para esclavizarlos en toda la extension de la palabra, de todas formas muy buena actuacion por parte de este chavo que se lleva toda la pelicula, ¿por cierto que fue de Jaye Davidson? salio en 2 que 3 peliculas y desaparecio, ¿que hace ahora?.

    I don't remember the "North African Desert 8000 B.C" scene from the movie. When Daniel explains to his group about the history of Ra by using the paintings on the wall, this scene was shown as a flashback but not like this. Is it some kind of deleted prologue scene ?

      The original opening of the movie, restored in the Director's cut. They also restored another scene where the General explains the contingency plan to O'Neil (using the bomb to destroy the Stargate if the other side turns hostile).

    Here's my theory, I don't know, if it was ever confirmed, or not, but you know how Ra arrived on Abydos at the time the team with O'Neil and Jackson did? My theory is this. He left Earth in the Ancien Egypt era and since then was on his way to Abydos.
    Evidence number 1. His ship was of a lighter build, than those later in the show, he might not even have hyperdrive. Sure the show made it clear all large ships are fitted with hyperdrive engines, but the movie was made before the establishing of the lore, so in that "reality" hyperdrives didn't exist. So if it had no hyperdrive, then it had to go slowly all the way. And in the movie Abydos was very far away, something about the other end of known universe, or stuff. That's a really really long way for a ship without hyperdrive.
    Evidence number 2. We see him upon arrival leaving the sarcophagus. Why would he need to use it, if not as a stasis pod for a long travel? Before the lore of the show, Ra was a different kind of alien and he was said to be the last one of his dying race. So there's no need to cruise around bickering with the other system lords, who weren't existing in the movie. And with no fights, there's no other need to use the sarcophagus, definitely not for repairs of his body, since he wasn't fighting anyone.
    So the humans rebelled against him and during his long travel from Earth to Abydos, they developed on technological and cultural level, until 2 wars were fought and the gate in Ghiza was found and later activated by Daniel Jackson's efforts. The humans took the shortcut to Abydos, while Ra had to take the longer road.

    Hold on, i'm somewhat confused. This is same Egyptian boy whose body was used by Ra as a host for itself 8000 years ago? I thought the Gou'uld would need a new body, in less than a quarter of that time. I mean, I know that once the host becomes what it is, it would have extended youth and longevity, but not for such a long period of time, right?

    • @madmanarrivednow
      @madmanarrivednow 5 лет назад +1

      I think that Host body thing was somewhat cleared, with Ra's previous body being an Asgard. And already an injured one. And Asgard mutations could be a hell to repair already. And I know this was a retcon, or even considered non canon. It's Wiki... And a sort of extention to a board game (which is not canon, I think)... and Reddit... whatever. Just jumping in before a butthurt fan, who starts to call everyone stupid, because noone knows this "well known fact".

    • @Kelmire1

      The movie and the tv show are different universes. The tv show tries to connect the two, but it is still two completely different universes. Ra was not an Asgard, because the Asgard were 'slowly' dying over thousands of years. Ra's species were imminently dying. Plus in the show, the Asgard knew humanity existed. In the movie, Ra had to roam several galaxies almost aimlessly until he finally 'discovered' huamnity.
      I love the tv show, but the movie's concepts are far superior. Despite what the tv says or tries to say.. it's all bullshit. Ra is not a goauld and the goauld are not a thing in the movie. It's heavily implied that Ra and his immediate family are quite literally the last of his race. His species being long sinced extinct.
      So don't try to connect the movie and the tv show There is no connection. Like, at all. They both have stargates and there's a planet called Abydos, that's about it. SG-1 tries to be a sequel, but by retconning so much? It is not a sequel; it's a reboot.

    Ra is the last of the Elohim - aka the last surviving Anunnaki from the Sumerian pantheon of “gods.”
    He’s the Yahweh of the Bible. Same script different cast. This film is a bio drama of our ancient past. An illustration of how technology is perceived as supernatural - and the misuse of that knowledge to control an entire world.
