I've been a master carpenter and cabinet maker for over 35 years and I'm am seriously impressed with what this gentleman achieved with simple hand tools. That was a complex joint that could easily gone wrong had his layout not been perfect. Truly remarkable and much respect to a true craftsman.

They're still chunky, unwieldy, and lack some serious control finesse. A proper jig, with some practice, and a simple wrench and screwdriver can outperform power tools in a machine shop.
These skills have been passed down from the dark ages. If you look around RUclips you will find a lot of hand crafted things that I at least say "How the F did he do that?"
And... I think about all those channels that use cnc machines, lathes, 3D printers, and all those high tech tools... Big respect to this senior craftsman.
I want to see it all combined. The cleverness and resourcefulness of the old styles combined with the ingenuity and technology of the new. Truly amazing things start happening when you both remember and learn from the past while also grow from the present.
@@bobdole4916 Likely the result would be the same products but crafted much faster and with a cleaner finish. The difference in this stool on new tech vs old is production time, and material used. Doing it much faster would let it be refined over the same time period.
Yes, you have. And now I have too. Soon my woodworking group will as well. Something this complex makes me wonder how many prototypes were made in the distant past before the maker got it right? and all with basic handtools and a pretty blunt chisel :) - speechless.
I don’t even understand how one would even conceptualize the design/build steps, let alone actually create same.... genius, visionary, master craftsman, skilled engineer and artist indeed!
It's highly doubtful that one single craftsman came up with this design with no inspiration at all from pre-existing single-block designs. It's more probable that someone came up with a simpler stool based off of single-block toys or other things, and other craftsmen improved on it.
Mark P. That was like the mini version. In museums they are very ornate, but they are also traditional for toddlers to figure out. This isn’t the only configuration, but I think this is the basic Lo Ban. Just basic! There used to be a Canadian guy who would do stuff like this with his antique tool collection at fairs and period museum shows here in Maine, and I remember he had that quirky calm of that painter guy on PBS. I do think focusing like that can be tranquil, which probably allows for the mathematical acuity. I don’t think you could multi task and do this. Truly amazing.

One decent solar flare, and he is once again the master craftsman of the village....he lives free from the tyranny and dependence of power companies....slow and satisfying human work, building personal skills, patience, persistence, resilliance, a family business and income, the capacity for his children and relatives to learn on the job, strengthening family and village relations producing beautiful functional articles, no destructive mining, no polluting coal-fired electricity.....i wonder if people will feel so very satisfied when machines replace their jobs, leaving people destitute and feeling superfluous.....a balance of old and new is ideal...sometimes the old ways are the best. Whether its building a computer or this wonderful traditional carpentry, hats off to the skills.

Theirs are the communities that will survive, even flourish, when.. not if.. our high tech era stumbles, or outright fails. Any structure, dependant on another, is doomed to share its fate.

I've shared some of my knife making with them but this has me interested in expanding to more intricate woodworking to teach them more patience while working.

I'm not sure if this was China or Japan, but in some of the East Asian cultures, a carpenter is given as much respect as an architect would be in Western societies. There is a reason why East Asia loves to use wooden materials in almost every aspect of their culture. It's totally sustainable, easy to work with, and super versatile. The material truly creates the craftsman!
China. This design is 1000+ years old. A genius carpenter named Lu Ban thought of these types of joinery, and he documented it and the knowledge survives to this day. Fun note: there's a woodworking company called Luban.

I have serious doubts that I could visualize the separations and geometry well enough to design this in some CAD software, but to be able to see it so completely within the single block just blows me away. Anyone noticed he never looked at a diagram or drawing of the stool? All from memory. Now that's a very deep tradition and love and respect for one's culture. Deservedly.
This is indeed high quality skill.When one considers how primitive and of what poor quality this man’s tools and accessories are . Imagine what he could have done if younger and had the benefit of the quality of tools our “so called” master woodworkers have at THEIR disposal . I have the highest admiration and regard for this old man.

I'm not sure if this was China or Japan, but in some of the East Asian cultures, a carpenter is given as much respect as an architect would be in Western societies. There is a reason why East Asia loves to use wooden materials in almost every aspect of their culture. It's totally sustainable, easy to work with, and super versatile. The material truly creates the craftsman!
China. This design is 1000+ years old. A genius carpenter named Lu Ban thought of these types of joinery, and he documented it and the knowledge survives to this day.
Fun note: there's a woodworking company called Luban.

Incredible. I have serious doubts that I could visualize the separations and geometry well enough to design this in some CAD software, but to be able to see it so completely within the single block just blows me away. Oh yeah...... and then to be able to actually make it. Wow, and thanks for sharing.
