I've been a master carpenter and cabinet maker for over 35 years and I'm am seriously impressed with what this gentleman achieved with simple hand tools. That was a complex joint that could easily gone wrong had his layout not been perfect. Truly remarkable and much respect to a true craftsman.

@@JohnDoe-up7gy power tools are seriously overrated. There hasn't been a good improvement that I've seen in power tools in 30 years. They're still chunky, unwieldy, and lack some serious control finesse. A proper jig, with some practice, and a simple wrench and screwdriver can outperform power tools in a machine shop.

Mark P. That was like the mini version. In museums they are very ornate, but they are also traditional for toddlers to figure out. This isn’t the only configuration, but I think this is the basic Lo Ban. Just basic! There used to be a Canadian guy who would do stuff like this with his antique tool collection at fairs and period museum shows here in Maine, and I remember he had that quirky calm of that painter guy on PBS. I do think focusing like that can be tranquil, which probably allows for the mathematical acuity. I don’t think you could multi task and do this. Truly amazing.

I'm not sure if this was China or Japan, but in some of the East Asian cultures, a carpenter is given as much respect as an architect would be in Western societies. There is a reason why East Asia loves to use wooden materials in almost every aspect of their culture. It's totally sustainable, easy to work with, and super versatile. The material truly creates the craftsman!
