Sonic Forces felt like an automatic level or something. Like I barely felt like I was playing the game as there were many automatic running/mini cutscenes during gameplay
Sure, the levels may be EXTREMELY SHORT AND EASY, but that’s not my main issue with this game. Moreover, it’s because of Classic Sonic’s involvement in the plot. Sega tries to include him, but fail miserably. You know what, it’s the whole story. To be completely honest, all of my issues that I have with this game deal with the loosely formed plot. Well, thanks for trying to make these levels as enjoyable as you could. Everything that previous boost formula stages threatened to be, actually did happen here. Automation is riddled throughout, simplification of Sonic's moveset and levels, gimmicky and inconsistent 2D sections, and a lack of altogether trust for players. That's not to say that they are entirely bad, but still pretty awful as compared to the rollercoaster joyrides of stages that came before it. Here's how I would rank the what is it... A meager seven stages??? Well sure you have the duo stages, but anyway... 7. Lost Valley: As bare bones as they get and riddled with unnecessary automation 6. Luminous Forest: Again, extreme levels of automation. Some neat diverting paths, but still super restrictive 5. Metropolitan Highway: Some neat parts, but the stiffness and simplification in overall gameplay really hurts here 4. Sunset Heights: The 3D section is passable, but the fact that the rest of the stage is in 2D and has pretty finnicky platforming bogs it down 3. Network Terminal: This stage really looks the part, especially when your on the rails, which is personally my favorite part. Multiple routes. It's decent 2. Egg Gate: Does have a relative sense of natural momentum which us nice and multiple routes. Still, automation is present 1. Mortar Canyon: This one actually has a buttload of potential and I think is the game's best stage. Variety of chances to experiment with the physics and the entire thing is in 3D ...Oh, they're also way too short
You don't say ridiculous things, if we'ee generous the unleashed daytime levels would be a total of 45 minutes for the S-Rank. Eggmanland and the Night time levels can't enter in the comparison, since if so, all levels of Forces would have to be compared to do things fairly.

Almost 10 years since Unleashed and this is how plain, linear, short and boring these levels have become. This is downright embarrassing that this is the best they can do
I'm pissed that they were so short, and had hardly any unique gimmicks, but they look absolutely gorgeous. And to me Sonic plays better and smoother than he did in any of the previous boosting games. Can't wait for the mods
The Surgeon Unleashed felt more smooth but I love the fact that sonic can home attack faster in this game and his boost launches him in the air instead of propelling him forward
Powdered Toast Man Unleashed wasn't as smooth as Forces is, Forces Sonic is a lot more controllable and feels like a genuine platformer Unleashed was just slippery and jagged all around
Phantom Drags - WTF? "Unleashed was just slippery and jagged all around". You read that as he hasn't played it? I really like Unleashed, but the PS3 version (only version I have) honestly is pretty poor. Control is terrible, in the hub worlds it's too stiff and in the levels the only way you can keep any sort of control is by drifting, which you shouldn't have to do in a Sonic game. That's for the 3-D parts at least. The 2-D in that game is mostly excellent
Damn, less than 15 minutes to beat all modern sonic stages?........why does this game keep on disapointing .-. At least SEGA found the good and bad things about sonic, and now are able to probably make a EVEN BETTER sonic game next time :)

The Surgeon Unless modders can add the drift, light speed dash and change the physics, (which is most likely not gonna happen) Unleashed and Gens levels are kinda not feesable.
Yeah! I do actually like how sonic handles in this game, it feels so satisfying to use the air boost and its definitely something I wanna see if they make another boost game :)
Hmmm. In Sonic Generations, it takes about 30 minutes to complete all modern stages with a S rank. I don't get why they decided to shorten the stages. But the music in forces is really nice, so I guess that's one positive thing about it.

The music is pretty catchy actually when you play it. Metropolitan Highway and Luminous Forest are particicular favourites of mine. As for the stages being linear, yeah. The first one is, but that's kind of understandable since it's basically a tutorial level. The others are not much better though, sadly. Mortar Canyon has lots of paths, but Sunset Heights has absolutely none (at least in the 3-D sections). Shame.

I felt sad about this one, especially coming from Mania Plus. I mean, the visuals and setpieces where on point and they where beautifull but the stages complexity and challenge is so dull and they all ends so abruptly that has me feeling like they where unfinished in almost all the cases.
This game kinda makes me think of star fox as in like how the protag goes through levels and they are communicating with him while events are taking place. I think a forces type game and starfox cross over would be cool. Imagine playing as sonic on the ground while the star fox team takes down an egg fleet or something.
Not one of the stages goes over three lousy minutes. Christ. Unleashed day stages not only went well over five minutes in some cases, but they were infinitely more varied and satisfying than Forces stages. Correction: Only ONE stage goes over two minutes. The rest aren't even two fucking minutes. I couldn't even heat up dinner in that time. I get that Sonic's fast, but that doesn't mean the levels have to be short... Hell! Some don't even last NINETY SECONDS!
Sonic forces: Boost 2 Win There were only 2 level designers in the game and they were newbies. Likewise, this was from a time devs were sensitive to "game journalists". Sonic Frontiers: Boosting is required, but good luck if you too used to Sonic Forces!
That’s even more of a problem, and shows how much of a step back Forces is. Imagine how long Unleashed’s Day levels would be without the boost. They would still be infinitely longer than Forces’s “3D” levels.
You know what i realized i missed in this game? I miss sonics remarks on gameplay. Remember in unleashed "Go!" "Feelin good" "(r rolling intensifies) rrrrraahhh!" "WOOOO!"
I really hope that Sonic Frontiers is not just a Sonic Forces clone with open world environments that look worse that Sonic Lost World cause it’s not going to be fun that way
My guess is that the level layout is too linear, the screen is too static so that it seems Sonic runs in normal speed only even in boost mode, and of course the stage duration is way waaay too short. 5-10 minutes might be too long, 2-4 minutes is absolutely perfect, and 0-2 minutes is just ridiculously short. It's funny actually... the cinematic scenes and Sonic's homing attacks make it seems he's fast, but during actual gameplay and boost mode he seems normal paced. Did SEGA learn nothing from Unleashed's night stages, Lost World and BOOM?
Aside of the low speed in this game, there's something I don't like of these modern sonic games since Unleashed: the homing attack's reticle. I mean we didn't need it before, it can sound silly but I don't like that and the fact we can't control Knuckles, Tails, Amy, Silver, etc. If SEGA could make stages specially designed for them in future games aside of Sonic stages (still making the average amount of Sonic stages in each game), I'm sure Sonic games would go back to the top of their genre and they would gain durability. Also, what do you think about an online open world featuring the avatars you can create in Forces? With some improvements of course and a bunch of activities and mini games, a chat and all the usual stuff for a social game. It could be a separate mode from the main game.
I beat the game right when it came out and I was like “that’s it?” Wow that was underwhelming I’m not really a fan of this game generations was short but generations has thought out into the level design forces was so mediocre and boring that I played it once and I haven’t played it since I beat it the first time
These stages aren't following the Two-Three routes that Sonic games always use to make the stages more intricate... When people say that forces isn't good but they can't point its major problems that's probably what their problems lie.
Dis how you fix Modern: 1. Remove ALL speed boosters 2. Remove MOST automated sections (keep ones for loops) 3.Remove auto-turning 4. Implement drifting to Sonic's moveset, and have drift-only sections at certain points (like the quick-step only sections) but still be able to boost. 5. Make the enemies stronger (specifically the 3 ground robots (not including motobugs) the still one, the one with the plasma gun, and the one with the machine gun. Replace all the stationary ones with the plasma gun ones.). and boom levels are so much more fun.
Tips for a new Sonic game. 1. Have 15 stages. Each stage has 3 acts. Each act at minimum is 5 minutes long and that's if you are doing perfect game play. The 2nd act has a mini boss. After the 3rd act you go into the boss fight. In the stage Sonic will have to find the bonus stage to get the Chaos Emerald. So essentially to complete one whole stage it should take you 45 minutes to 1 hour including 3 acts, Mini Boss and Main Boss, and special stage. 2. Sonic should have every move from every game with the addition of a sonic boom, a self tornado spin, a group tornado spin, and counter moves. Also he would have new moves with his different shields as well. Like an EMP blast, or a meteor homing, or a bubble pinball. 3. For enemies have them actually try to kill Sonic instead of just letting him run through them. Also bring back the element from Sonic Heroes where some of them have life force. Some should be more durable than others and Sonic's moves should have varying degrees of power. A Spin Dash would hurt more than a regular jump spin. 4. Stage design would be an upgraded version of Sonic Unleashed daytime stages. And there would be more emphasis on moving faster while also fighting. Kinda like God of War if Kratos was the Flash, to where you are dodging traps and fighting enemies but at insane speeds. Gives players more incentive to practice all Sonics moves and get better at the stages, so they don't loose momentum when running. It would also provide some cool cut scenes from time to time depending on what you pulled off. 5. Boss fights will not all be the same. For some reason lately the new Sonic games have this habit of making all the boss fights the same style with Sonic chasing after Eggman. While that may work for some fights like the Egg Dragoon in Sonic Generations (that was badass), every fight should be different. Mind you they are all speed based because what else would they be playing ass Sonic, but they would not all involve chasing Eggman down a runway. 6. Lastly there shouldn't be too many things in the game that are faster or as fast as Sonic. The player should feel like for the majority of the game they have that as their advantage of being quicker than everything else. We are taking about a guy who can reach up to 2500 mph.
Watch the Sonic Unleashed day stages and then watch this video straight after, it's sad what's become of modern Sonic

Most of Modern Sonic's stages you can beat by just holding down the boost button.
Well then what happens if you run out of boost then
Ngl but Mortar Canyon is actually a really exhilarating stage!
I like how Network terminal is the only Sonic forces level that can naturally be 2 minutes
These levels are so short, and it's just boosting - no challenge really. Shame on Sonic developers.
5:38😂You’re SO gonna regret that. Hedgehogs don’t make good snacks!
Id rather have another Sonic Heroes than these modern Sonic games. I bought this game and finished it in the same day (dlc included)
Sonic forces: Boost 2 Win
There were only 2 level designers in the game and they were newbies.
Likewise, this was from a time devs were sensitive to "game journalists".
Sonic Frontiers: Boosting is required, but good luck if you too used to Sonic Forces!
lol first time I played sonic frontiers , I wasn't that good
Beacuse I was too used on sonic forces but I got the hang of sonic frontiers.
Am I the only one who thought for the QTEs if you press the button sooner you get more score?
Has anyone noticed when you grind you get a thousand points a second?
I'm so glad I didn't buy this game. The stages look amazing but it's way too short! By the way your skills is amazing.
I regret so much buying this instead of Mania on the eshop
Update: it has been a fun time but the levels are so depressingly short
sonic is meant to be 2d and when he made a movie it sounded good thou when we relized it was gunna be LIVE ACTION I LOST INTREST
wow modern Sonic only got about 15 minutes of gameplay in this game. O.o
To be fair this game was supposed to be more about your custom character but...even they got the short end of the sthick XD
Part of me feels like if the boost wasn’t here the levels might be better
That’s even more of a problem, and shows how much of a step back Forces is.
Imagine how long Unleashed’s Day levels would be without the boost. They would still be infinitely longer than Forces’s “3D” levels.
If they got rid of the boost Wisps literally nothing would change. I don't think you'd even run out of boost even if the wisps were gone.
You know what i realized i missed in this game? I miss sonics remarks on gameplay. Remember in unleashed "Go!" "Feelin good" "(r rolling intensifies) rrrrraahhh!" "WOOOO!"
This is my favorite 3D Sonic game it's my first 3D sonic game and it took me 5 hours to beat
Cool :)
1:28 3:50 5:55 7:38 12:50 14:31
10:22 one that was actually over 2 mins
I really hope that Sonic Frontiers is not just a Sonic Forces clone with open world environments that look worse that Sonic Lost World cause it’s not going to be fun that way
Sonic forces is just a 2d game
Sonic Forces Modern Sonic stages are so short, i can complete them under 1 minute
Unleashed's night stages are good
Damn. Sonic talks a lot in this one.
And make too many jokes
Automatics...Automatics everywhere...
Wow all the modern stages combined is equal to an S rank in one werehog level
So Rooftop Run, it takes around 3-5 mins, and all the stages of forces are 15 mins?
Adabat day can go up to 20 minutes. And eggmanland can go up to 40 minutes.
1:00 This Pun Was Used So Much By People At The Time That The Game Was Out, And Now It's Gone and Lost of Grace.
I beat the game right when it came out and I was like “that’s it?” Wow that was underwhelming I’m not really a fan of this game generations was short but generations has thought out into the level design forces was so mediocre and boring that I played it once and I haven’t played it since I beat it the first time
Sonic got so SLOW and the levels are so SHORT. How did they fuck up something they did right the first 3 times?????
"Such wasted potential"
-Sub-Zero
These stages aren't following the Two-Three routes that Sonic games always use to make the stages more intricate... When people say that forces isn't good but they can't point its major problems that's probably what their problems lie.
Dis how you fix Modern:
1. Remove ALL speed boosters
2. Remove MOST automated sections (keep ones for loops)
3.Remove auto-turning
What's so fun about the loops ? They should get rid of them to.
still agree though
The stages also needed more 3d platforming.
Egg Gate WAY TOO COOL!
oh boy I fucking love AUTOMATED HALLWAYS: THE VIDEO GAME
Like 15 minutes. Seriously sega?
I'll never understand why they removed the standard life system.
My bro in christ its modern gaming
Omg cant wait to get it
When generations is still consider the best sonic game we have gotten so far.
Well, the best 3D Sonic. The best Sonic game overall is Mania if you ask me.
Sonic Unleashed: Lemme introduce myself
Oh, practically the rank D and E don't exist.
what a legendary video
So much unused potential..
We need way more walljump sections and more quickstep sections and less linear boosting
The fact that this is less than 15 minutes really isn't a good thing
