I've been wanting to learn to use metalpoint, yours is one of the most useful videos on the topic. The idea of using an exacto knife holder is great, considering the ridiculous price they're asking for what I guess we're supposed to believe are real, official metalpoint drawing. I think I'll try goldpoint.
Thank you for this. It’s the best demo on silverpoint I’ve seen. I used marbledust + gouache on vellum and it did smudge with a blending stomp very nicely.
It lasts a very long time. If you work small scale you may only need one or two 1" silver rods every few years, depending on how many drawings you make.
Hi.....thank you for your reply........thought I’d try gold colour pencils.........the gold is quite different between brands.......I did a portrait of a young Henry V111....... it actually looks good...🥰🥰🥰
How fun! Do you have a website? I'd love to see it. Also, what brands of gold coloured pencils were you using? Have you tried actual gold to draw? It's a lot like silverpoint but it doesn't tarnish.
@@ArtEssentials hi.... I actually used the gold pencils from the sets of Fabre Castel , Prismacolour, Derwent.......they all have a slightly different tone to each other..........I must have a go at the real gold point drawing...... I suppose you could combine the silver and gold....should look nice when the silver tarnishes......best wishes to you. 🥰🥰🥰
It takes a long time to tarnish unless you force it to do so sooner. There are a couple ways to do that. In case you're interested in pushing the tarish sooner, the book Silverpoint and Metalpoint; A Complete Guide describes that process very well. It's an excellent book on the subject all around.
Yes. You can expose a silverpoint drawing to liver of sulpher fumes. I've never done it, but the book Silverpoint and Metalpoint Drawing, by Tom Mazullo and Susan Schwalb, discusses the details of doing so. In a nutshell, you are only trying to expose the drawing to the fumes over several hours, ideally in a sealed container. Here is the book I am referring to. It is excellent and comprehenssive. www.amazon.com/Silverpoint-Metalpoint-Drawing-Complete-Medium-ebook/dp/B07L6SXY2P
For those wishing to know more about the intricacies of silverpoint and metalpoint more generally, there is a new book out on the subject. It's truly excellent and comprehensive: Silverpoint and Metalpoint Drawing, A Complete Guide to the Medium, by Susan Schwalb and Tom Mazullo. They are experts. You can find the book here: www.amazon.com/Silverpoint-Metalpoint-Drawing-Complete-Medium-ebook/dp/B07L6SXY2P
My apologies for replying so late. You can buy silver rod on Amazon or from your local jeweler. 12 gauge wire fits a standard graphite clutch-style pencil. Prisma color makes once. The silver should cost you about one USD per inch (or less) and the pencil clutch will run you about 10-15 USD.
Hello Mr960silva, The small sphere was drawn on untreated mat board. However, the gesso on the table in the background is liquitex. I normally use Liquitex Clear Gesso because I prefer the soft glow of the natural paper.
Natural Pigments in Wilits, CA, sells several types of metal points, a stylus and a ground. This is a company I highly recommend as everything I have ever purchased from them has been of the highest quality. Their customer service is also very good.
Thanks Nathan Meier, I have not used their metalpoint products, but have ordered other items from them in the past. For sure a great company. I always appreciate those few folks who sell high quality craft materials. Thanks again for your post.
I suppose you could but there is no need as the marks are stable without fixative. It would likely prevent the tarnishing that many find so lovely, however that may be something others wish to prevent.

Is it possible to speed up the tarnishing process?
Yes. You can expose a silverpoint drawing to liver of sulpher fumes. Yes, thanks for asking!

Other ask: can be used fixative on the drawings by this technique ?
I suppose you could but there is no need as the marks are stable without fixative. It would likely prevent the tarnishing that many find so lovely, however that may be something others wish to prevent.
are there any other metals you can use to draw with?
Yes. Metals like copper, aluminum, and gold also work.
what brand is that gesso ?
Mr960silva Liquitex.
