When she got to the point in the video about practicing, I was thinking to myself, "is it anything like swinging around a jump rope, because I'm boss at that.
first of all.....Awesome tutorial and cosplay!!! you guys are amazing! I have one question....did you also made a tutorial for the earthbending element??? I hope you guys keep on cosplaying, you are all great!! Greetings, a fan :P
OMG!!! I just found one of your videos online of you bending (I'm a huge avatar fan! and never even thought of using veil poi! its so perfect!) and then found this! its perfect and covers so much! I am working on solving the fabric wearing near the top on the poi because mine do the same thing! but I love the fabric substitution you used it works really well! Thank you so much for the DVD and youtube shout out! Im so excited about the bending aspect! I would love to work with you on something? lol I dont know I'm just mad excited over this video!
Thank you SO much for doing this tutorial. I know it must've been a hard decision to share it but I'm so thankful you did. I can't wait to make mine and bring them to upcoming cons. You're the best Korra ever.
It does work with thin wire :) Funny enough I did this last year for my Korra cosplay. I raved when I was younger and thought how awesome would it be to see if it works with fabric! I used the fishing swizzles and sewed my own finger holders so it blended with my arm bands. I did thick sewing string but braided it so it was super strong. I tried black thread first because of how light effects it. Haven't tried fishing wire yet, but would braid that too. for my weight I tried two different ones, both worked. One was a small blue bouncy ball and the other was sand I filled into a blue balloon and then sewed it into the end of the fabric. I have a couple variations and love playing with them all. Nice work!
Hey, could you please explain how you did that? I'm trying to do this for my Korra cosplay that's due next month and I have no way of getting a poi ball on time lol, your technique sounds interesting!
Sure! I actually just did it with fishing wire/twine and it worked really well! You can barely see the fishing twine in the photos. The two weight options I used and both worked was either a small balloon (same color as the fabric) filled with sand (same color as the balloon) or a bouncy ball (same color as the fabric). I chose those options so if it smacked into me or someone else... it wouldn't hurt as much ;) Depending on how much fabric you are using and the weight of the fabric will depend on how much to fill the balloon and/or the size of the bouncy ball. I then just sewed that at the tip of one of the corners making sure to leave about half an inch of fabric to place an eyelet to attach the fishing swivel. With the fishing twine I braided it to make it stronger as well as making sure to leave an extra amount on either end to tie around the end of the fishing swivels. For the finger loop, i sewed them together just under my fingers and then attached a D-ring at the end of the finger loops and attached the fishing swivel to that. Once it was all together I practiced to feel the weight and make any adjustments needed. Good luck and have fun!
Sasha Puskar Hey thanks, that's very helpful ! I was starting to give up on this but I think I might try again now lol. Another question, what would be the ideal length of fabric for a water bending prop? I feel like 3 meters is a LOT, but then again it might be the best length, I'm really bad at estimating measures haha
We made a few of these recently for our Umbreon and Espeon cosplays. Our only issue was we couldnt find the swivels big enough for our hooks to go through, so we had to add a set of split rings (keyring style) to attach them.
Hey! I was so happy to find your video because you inspired me to make my own vois for my Korra cosplay. I did use fishing wire. I used thicker ones, just to be sure it doesn't break when I'm using them, 'cause that could be dangerous. The fishing wire works very well, in my opinion. It's sometimes a bit hard to hold because it's a little slippery (I'm still working on a solution to that). But I have to say it works great! :) I was wondering, in your bending video, there is a part where it looks like you aren't holding the voi at all. It's the second shot of this video, when you're standing back to back with the Mako cosplayer. Could you tell me how you did that? :)
Awesome! Ever since I captured you guys at AX I've wondered how you came up with the idea, so it's really interesting to see the steps you took in creating such a cool prop. Had no idea it was attached to a ball like that since you really can't tell when you're bending. Also, what about when it comes to Alicia's prop? Since hers is a bit different... were there different steps involved in the creation?
an alternative to the legit poi is to take plastic ornament baubles and weigh them down with washers, and to make it look like you arent holding anything you can use transparent fishing wire. i would recommend checking out axceleration’s tutorial as well if you're looking for this cheaper alternative, as she goes into more detail about it.
Have you ever faced any issues with getting into a convention with them? I know at some larger conventions I go to, we have to go through prop check or even metal detectors. Thank you for the tutorial!
No, conventions tend to focus on props that can be used as weapons like wooden swords or pipes. these don't pose a threat. We didn't even have to get them checked or peace bonded :)) -Alicia(Bolin)
Hi! Thanks for the awesome tutorial, I can't wait to try it out for myself! Do you happen to have a tutorial for the Earth bending techniques? Like what kind of material was used to make the disks? My boyfriend and I are going to be going as Opal and Bolin in about two and a half weeks and we'd love to be able to bend at the convention too! I hope you respond soon, Thank you!!
Hi:3 i was wondering about how you held the chain? All dog collars i can find that are the appropriate length have large rings that wont hold to my finger. Do you have any advice?
Did you use the full three yards of fabric? I bought three yards and have made the voi and it seems like way too much fabric. Did you cut down the width of the fabric or use three yards to make two?
+CosplayInABox I love this tutorial, but I was wonderin if you could make one for earthbending as well? I know you guys probably aren't a group anymore or checking comments, but one can hope ...
If you're a beginner at voi/poi dance , i would recommend first buying a practise kit , it comes with the voi/poi equipment and a training dvd, i am currently using this to prepare for my Korra cosplay , i'll add the link here : www.homeofpoi.com/shop/productDetails/Bonus-DVD-Art-of-Poi-COL2-and-Pair-of-Ball-Chain-Fluffy-Poi
Thanks for sharing this great video! This may be a dumb question, but what are the dimensions of the washers? I got one that's 1/4 in x 1-1/4 in. I have the exact ball used in the video. I'm actually going to use fishing wire so I may have to add a couple extra washers to balance the weight (possibly).
My voi have a smooth ring attached at the end of the chain, and I just loop my finger through that and hold. I've never gotten blisters from it, so I'm not sure what to tell you /: what kind of chain/rope are you using?
CosplayInABox I made it just like you did with the tutorial... the ring is a bit big for my finger though so that might have something to do with it...
Great tutorial!!! I also tried to make one with my own kind of system for the weight, practically it's the same but I just used a plastic ball and filled it up with things for the weight.. I used a really lightweight fabric but no matter what.. somehow it just wont move right. When I swing it the fabric seems to be too heavy because I can only swing it around slowly and not above my head or something or it will just come down again.. Should I add more or less weight to solve this problem? o.o
I seem to be having trouble with my Voi. I followed your design to a T but it doesn't really swing as well as I'd hoped. Unless I really pull on the voi it doesn't swing into a full circle, its just kinda gets caught in the end of the pendulum and then droops. I tried lowering the weights, I tried really increasing the weights, and I just cant seem to find out the problem. any suggestions?
Guys! I found the name for the 'Loop'! - It's a so called 'locking carabiner'. At least that's what my translator says, in German it's Schraubkarabiner. I hope I was able to help you all! :)
Also if you're using 100% polyester you can finish the edges by burning them slightly. Since it's a synthetic fabric it'll melt. But it has to be 100% polyester
Yes!! I totally forgot to share my post of the pictures/names of the materials! I wrote it all up on my tumblr, so I'll link you to that in the video description (: - Kitt
Why don't you just get all the stuff from the two dollar shop I know that I can get all that stuff from the two dollar shop it is so simple and easy I am not joking it cost me about 10 bucks to make my year so easy I'm not joking so You can try and get some Etosha cares is just a lot simpler to do so just an idea for If you ever need to making more
When she got to the point in the video about practicing, I was thinking to myself, "is it anything like swinging around a jump rope, because I'm boss at that.
Did you already make a tutorial for the Bolin prop? If you haven't please please do! They all look so beautiful!
first of all.....Awesome tutorial and cosplay!!! you guys are amazing!

THIS IS LIKE COLORGUARD EXCEPT IT WAS A THING WITH A WIRE THING AND CLOTH
It does work with thin wire :) Funny enough I did this last year for my Korra cosplay. I raved when I was younger and thought how awesome would it be to see if it works with fabric! Nice music choice! I love Dexy's Midnight Runners.
SOOO COOL
Hyuna is playing in the background haha what a queen
9 year old tutorial I'm still using! Thank you for this
OMG HYUNA AND COME ON EILEEN
This is really cool, thanks for the tips

Did you make your Korra cosplay or did you buy it? If you bought it can you please tell me where? It's AMAZING!

Yes! Definitely different materials. I'll have to see if she's planning on making a tutorial or giving an explanation!

So, when you use fishing wire are you replacing the chains with it?
thanks so much! I'm planning a Korra cosplay and this will be so awesome for it! Thanks for sharing!

That's good, Thank you!

What color of fabric do you think would be best suitable to portray the lightning things that come out of Asami's equalist glove? :p
Personally I would get white fabric and then dye the edges a bluish-purple and have the edges bleed into the white middle!
- Kitt
Ok :) Thanks very much for your advice! I'll definitely try that. :D
Hi:3 i was wondering about how you held the chain? All dog collars i can find that are the appropriate length have large rings that wont hold to my finger. Do you have any advice?
You could try switching the rings out or adding a smaller keychain ring that fits your finger to the other ring that doesn't fit your finger
Did you use the full three yards of fabric? I bought three yards and have made the voi and it seems like way too much fabric. Did you cut down the width of the fabric or use three yards to make two?
I miss you guys
+CosplayInABox I love this tutorial, but I was wonderin if you could make one for earthbending as well? I know you guys probably aren't a group anymore or checking comments, but one can hope ...
RandomNessie123 just do a string with a rock on the end ad swing it around
OMG You look like Korra
ahh so helpful :3 thanks for making this video, me and my friend are doing a Korrasami cosplay so I'll definitely show her this video!
Question, when I'm bending, do I let the loop on the chain spin on my finger?
If you're a beginner at voi/poi dance , i would recommend first buying a practise kit , it comes with the voi/poi equipment and a training dvd, i am currently using this to prepare for my Korra cosplay , i'll add the link here

how did you dye your fabric? i could really use some tips! :D pretty please with pocky on top!!!

It can be any dimension, i believe. As long as it's weighing down the ball :)
Alright. Thanks for replying!! ^^
I have a question... how did you all hold your vois? when I try practicing I keep getting blisters... any pointers on how to hold it?
My voi have a smooth ring attached at the end of the chain, and I just loop my finger through that and hold. I've never gotten blisters from it, so I'm not sure what to tell you /: what kind of chain/rope are you using?
CosplayInABox
I made it just like you did with the tutorial... the ring is a bit big for my finger though so that might have something to do with it...
Thanks for making this video!! I can't wait to make one! Great video btw! :D

You probably have to add more weight since the weight in the ball currently can't pull all of your fabric. Hope that helped c:
I seem to be having trouble with my Voi. I followed your design to a T but it doesn't really swing as well as I'd hoped. Unless I really pull on the voi it doesn't swing into a full circle, its just kinda gets caught in the end of the pendulum and then droops. Maybe you have too much fabric or your fabric is too heavy? I'm not really sure. Sometimes starting over helps too.
Guys! I found the name for the 'Loop'! - It's a so called 'locking carabiner'. At least that's what my translator says, in German it's Schraubkarabiner. I hope I was able to help you all! :)
The video is on private but I really need this tutorial for my Katara cosplay :(
Could you give me the link?
Hi! Do you have a specific site that you would recommend on buying these? All the sites that I've seen don't look as good as yours. :o thanks!
still subscribed
I thought you and Heather's swinging were good though! I still need practice >.> great tutorial~
Why is the video unavailable? :( I really needed this tutorial!
DId you ever find out the name of the loop thing??
+Sade Alleyne It's a locking carabiner :)
Also if you're using 100% polyester you can finish the edges by burning them slightly. Since it's a synthetic fabric it'll melt. But it has to be 100% polyester
plz more videos
Can't we just use some kind of rope instead of the chain ? Because it seams very heavy ...
You could try! As I mentioned, I haven't tried fishing wire yet, but I imagine it would work just fine.
- Kitt
Can you make a list of all you really need for this, I can't hear the names of the things... .w.
Yes!! I totally forgot to share my post of the pictures/names of the materials! I wrote it all up on my tumblr, so I'll link you to that in the video description (:
- Kitt
I'm just thinking about how actually epic it would look if you used a translucent, super light blue fabric (or white) and called it airbending.
It's not available ;---;
And do you have Instagram
Correct me if I'm wrong but..... you guys used to have a lip sync battle on your channel. guess it's had to be taken down.
We put it on private for personal reason :) but i can give you the private link to watch it if youd like
+CosplayInABox That would be awesome. I randomly started singing it and went to find it but it was gone.
Hello. I do not speak English well and I cannot hear certain words. What kind of fabric do you use?
She said she used Silk
Hey C.P.I.A.B. korra is coming back on OCT THE 3!
That feeling when you find a rlly good channel but their last upload was 6 years ago..
Yeah it’s sad to find a cosplay of my favorite tv show but that the channel but hasn’t uploaded in 6 years
Is this like poi balls from Maori
Axceleration has a good tutorial for how to make these on the cheap, so if anyone wants to check her out do, she has some good tutorials.
bolin needs to work on his form
Why don't you just get all the stuff from the two dollar shop I know that I can get all that stuff from the two dollar shop it is so simple and easy I am not joking it cost me about 10 bucks to make my year so easy I'm not joking so
You can try and get some Etosha cares is just a lot simpler to do so just an idea for
If you ever need to making more
NOOOO Its blocked!
"And I Got To Show Her My Bending" That isn't cool, Theres no way that you showed THEM, And "Show her My Bending" It's not Real bending
I did it for $15
