Thank you both so much. Most instructors only talk about the f-stop but not where the camera should be focusing. I will have a 10-person photo shoot coming up with an older family ( no little kids) and maybe a dog. Really hard to find examples of this type of family session that is more lifestyle and not a wedding. Fingers crossed that at least everyone is in focus, lol. Thanks again.
It seems silly and obvious, but at weddings, you have to say clearly, "Look at me, please, and smile right here." People are always in the background with phones, and you don't realize the damage until it's too late!
Unique sisters , Unique knowledge they have , thanks ..there r many others things which we have to keep in mind like distance between subject and camera , focal length and of course f stop also ..which i think u missed ..
Thank you! So helpful. Biggest issue for me is: One person always being off in every shot…like someone will have eyes closed and no photos with everyone looking good. Head swaps don’t always work! Second, if I am IN the group shot and need to use a timer, the focus gives me anxiety.
Excited for the training this week!! I’ve learned so much from you both this past year! Can’t wait! I feel like shutter speed is my weakest skill and blurry photos when there is a little bit of movement.
Thanks. I have a 24-105mm F4.0 lens. For anything above 2 people I have to crank it up to at least F11 and at night I use a flash. What if people prefer not to stick together so close but a bit scattered in the room? Do you have to merge different pics?
As a beginner working in Manual mode for group shots, my biggest challenge is use of softbox lights. Where to place them, what level to set the lights etc. Lighting is like this magical thing that people creating the videos on the Internet make look so easy, but in actual use doesn't go so well for me.
Great tips! thanks for sharing make it much more clear! Question; if there are two lines as we see at 7:39 kids running and the next one (7:42), should I prefer to focus on the object closest to the second line?
I take club photos and I use too small of an f stop so sometimes people are blurry. It kind of adds to the club energy look but I’m definitely gonna get a different lens.
Nice video E's, I would just make one ask...if you could include the aperture, shutter speed and ISO in the images. Its one thing to hear you say where to focus but its good to see the actual effect of the aperture used in each photo. Thank you!
What about your focus settings? Do you use auto, single, manual mode? Single point or auto area? It always feels stressful moving the little red dot around every time I move or the group moves. Any suggestions for that? Thanks!
@@bamberscott1 nope. That is toggling. Trying Google focus and recompose vs toggle focus and hopefully you will find info on what the difference is. :)
Very good video,my last photoshoot was a group of 3-4 people..i did it with f2.8 and i surprised 😂 from the results...i was long time not making any photos for my defense...nuce tips
hi, guys fantastic video ,I need some help, I planning to take a family portrait indoor, we are 3 people including myself, I need some advise regarding camera settings I have a Sony A6400 and also , I have to figured out how to take the photos including me in the shot, please any advise will be appreciate. Thank you
Does this same thought apply to video? Have a 3-5 person podcast I'm recording in a living room type setting. Sony zv-e10 apsc with Sony 16mm 2.8 lens. Thanks!!
the biggest issue for me with big groups are usually at weddings when people run off and need to be tracked down or they get skipped , or the groups shot list gets changed because they want to come back to that one when they get there.
my greatest challenge actually is how to manage group of people inside a hall. i have a 30mm, f4.5 and iso at 1600. ambient light is pretty descent but whenever i transferred them to light room, it will always look dark and end up not able to fix skin tone even if you bumped up the exposure etc.
My biggest frustration with shooting groups is what lens to use! I have a canon t7 rebel, the lens I have are 50mm, 75-300, 24mm, and a kit lens that came with my camera.
I don't struggle with group portraits, but what I am having an issues with is a couple with their dog on a leash. The dog is always ahead I'd they're walking, any tips how to get all 3 of them in focus? Usually the dog is what ends up not being in focus 😫
The biggest frustration with group portraits is people that aren't in the portrait taking cell phone pictures and distracting the subject so they end up looking the wrong way. Parents, grandparents, etc. I'm going to start putting in my contract that they must leave phones in their car.
I think my biggest struggle in large group photos is when I'm being rushed. It's difficult already because it adds stress, but I'm just learning photography so having the pressure of people rushing me is just awful.
How to get great family portraits with my 50mm 1.4 lens and Canon Rebel t5i. It is an older camera and unfortunately this camera can’t be calibrated so not sure why taking blurry photos now :(

Hey! We use single point focus and we focus and recompose always.

With everything you have taught us here, I have one question: does it matter how far away you stand from your subject when applying these rules?
Nope! It doesn’t. Good question

great vid, but i have question.....in group photos should i use autofocus or manual? what is like the general rule.
Always auto focus
Thanks❤
Got my first photo shoot of a sweet 16. Super nervous. Should I stay in aperture or shutter priority .. or manual ?
Are you using manual focus or auto focus? Please may you reply if possible. Thank you x
Auto focus
Hi dear, What kind and how can I use lights for a group on stage. Soft box or umbrella? Tanx
Thanks for watching. That is not in our wheel house so I’m not so sure.

How about the setting of ISO and shutter speed?
only the F only?
Team photos! Large group!
To me, those F-stops seem very narrow? 😬
If they move slightly off plane.. Wouldnt they become out of focus?
Does auto focus not work as well as manuel focus?
What is your shutter speed at?
In group photo where do you usually put your focus? For example using eye af?
do you use a dynamic group focus mode? Which focus mode do you use for family dhot?
Thank you so much
What focus would you use for 40 people standing on stairs in five rows? Need all faces to be sharp. I’ll be using Sony 35 mm GM.
Are you using Matrix metering mostly for these?
Yep! Always
How about if it was more than two rows.say 6 rows🥺who do I focus on.and will it affect the f stop rule?
Do you guys have a white balance video ? What white balance did you use for the weddings?
Family of 3 to 5 what is the best aperture?
Thanks!

@@marmarsonnen7100 I agree!!! That’s super tough
Love it❤
the challenge start when trying to do that high aperture on low light :/ i didnt want to raise the iso too much
What focus point to use?
Large groups in low light like a reception!
Use a higher iso
try looking at the lens not the screen. to help connect with your audience
I get so nervous when doing a photo shoot. Always messing up and getting blurred photos. been to many classes...
always use tripod and wireless Shutter button when you too nervous
Me too 😒
How to get great family portraits with my 50mm 1.4 lens and Canon Rebel t5i. It is an older camera and unfortunately this camera can’t be calibrated so not sure why taking blurry photos now :(
Send it in to Canon for a checkup is probably your best bet.
Use a tripod
How about a family wanting to pose on steps? A large family group say with 4-5 levels on the stairs?
I would say with that many levels maybe go up to f6-8
