Heehee, yes, due to the unconventional nature of switching positions between segments, it indeed does feel like that. That said, they can totally handle hosting a talk show episode with zero advance notice, because they're adaptable Saturday Night Live people, and they have a humility about themselves that facilitates malleability, and they're creative, naturally entertaining showbiz veteran professionals, not to mention they're good at using this extenuating circumstance to their advantage.
That is the origin story of likely half of the actors/comedians in show business.

Hot Rod was Sambergs peak.
They weren't that funny. Mullaney kept mentioning their new movie and that was sickeninging. Samberg was more natural.

Weirdly this makes me appreciate the work that talk show hosts do. I thought they always wing it, maybe they do, but there’s definitely a skill to it if these seasoned comedians are struggling with it.
It could also be that they just don't care as it's not their show.
Struggling? Who's struggling?! All I see are 0 sh1ts given, with a good time being had by all.
Oh its certainly structured, but like any structure, its just a guideline and you have to be ready to think on your feet. Both preparation and live performance take refined skills. You can tell they were super anxious too, but that's just what these kind of comedians are like. I love Samburg and Mulaney, but they could only pull off this loose style a few times before it would get old, even more so when you consider this is a 13 min clip vs a 50 min show. Staying power requires a more steady hand generally. Of course its an artform so there are no hard and fast rules, but you have to understand the rules to subvert them properly, that's what Picasso taught us.

Here we are, watching two men who gave us diamonds like “the Salt and Pepper Diner” and “Threw it on the Ground”, both now with children, just running some half-improv’d banter back and forth with each other.

It seems 100% appropriate that an animated character voiced by John would be an old timey looking cell-by-cell hand-drawn character as opposed to some slick realistic CGI character. The style of animation that predominated when he should've been young 80 years ago fits him perfectly.
Just like his character in spiderman into the spiderverse

This is ALMOST as good as the time ben schwartz and adam pally hosted the late show during that awful snow story and a week of guest hosts. It is still my favorite and CBS keeps tearing it down anytime someone uploads it. you can still find it..the end when ben tosses the pen in the cup to end the show is amazing.

These 2 have great chemistry! I saw the film last night and I loved it, I was surprised with the amount of cameos that appeared in this film!
This feels like it would only work on Kimmel. Whenever he’s not able to be there, for whatever reason, there’s always someone interesting taking over. People are happy to help him out because he’s a genuinely nice guy, he’s not putting on a persona like Fallon.
Andy Samberg Bill Hader years were the funniest ones in the recent seasons. John Mulaney also very funny.

It seems funny that Mulaney & Samberg are still credited as the actors in foreign versions of the movie, considering its purely voiceover, so when the foreign actors do the voices there's literally no trace of either performance from the original.
I gotta say, we are lucky to have lived in the era where these dudes are at their peak. Andy was my first celeb crush on SNL and he STILLLLLLLLL gots it.
