      @Roman Haha, sure!
      The looks of a guitar don't matter much to me, as I've come to understand.
      I'm mostly looking at the side of the body and the neck.. just like to avoid binding and dark colours.
      What I love about the SEs is the Wide/Thin neck.. within the PRS family, I'm afraid I can't go beyond the SEs because the pattern thin neck is thicker.
      But it's ok and the SEs are great guitars.

    Of course these days, the PRS SE line has mostly moved to Indonesia, because, well, the South Koreans make a decent wage in 2020. To keep prices low, builders need to pay like a buck an hour or something. Don't feel too bad for World Musical Instruments in South Korea, though, because they're still building TONS of great guitars.

      Funny you should mention that. I've had a Korean SE since 2006 and I love it, play it everyday. I recently purchased an Esp Ltd H1007 for a thousand bucks, little more than I wanted to spend but I wanted a nice 7 string. I was FLOORED to see "Made in Indonesia" on the headstock, almost sent it back before I googled around and found out that's where a lot of guitars are made these days. $1,000 dollar guitar, made in Indonesia...what's the world coming to?

    Haha, you cracked me up! Great fun bits in there.
    I own a PRS SE Std 24 (w/o) the maple veneer and it's a fine guitar except the tuning issues and the muddy pickups.
    When the S2 line was introduced, I couldn't understand their value offering.
    It seems PRS S2 = PRS core line neck and playability but with costs cut in other places.
    So if you want the core line neck and craftmanship but don't want to pay for the body aesthetics + hardware/electronics, they are a nice product.
    Also, used PRS S2 are one of the best deals in their lineup..
    Personally, I'm a little vary of the thicker neck on the PRS S2 since I quite like the wide/thin one on my SE.
    Maybe, I've already reached the peak with this cheap-o guitar.. which is sad.

    • @budgetguitarist
      @budgetguitarist  3 года назад +1

      I'd say that's a great summary of the S2. I too am a huge fan of the wide thin neck pattern on the SE Custom 24 (and also on the Standard) - it's crazy easy to play. I own about 20 guitars and it is by far the easiest. The S2 does feel like a better made neck, but I don't like the profile as much. Unfortunately, if you want a thin profile neck in an American PRS, the cheapest one is the CE 24, which goes for two grand. I've played several of them, and they are great guitars, but they are not worth two grand to me - they play about 10% better and are more than double the cost.

      SEs on the lower side of the price range prior to the current (2021) lineup, come with very cheap plastic nuts. 99% the tuning issue comes from the nut. you may want to file it a bit, making sure the strings fall neatly and apply some graphite. this will definitely help. an alternative is to simply replace the nut with a high quality one.

    The top is called a bevel top. The nut on the SE is plastic, and is known for binding the strings. The S2 has the USA nut. The wood on the S2 is dried the same as the core guitars. I think that has something to do with the better sound.

    • @budgetguitarist
      @budgetguitarist  4 года назад

      The nut on my SE is definitely not plastic - it looks and feels like something similar to GraphTech - BUT my SE is I think around 7 years old, so it's possible they've changed the nut at some point in time. I agree about the wood - I think it definitely has an impact!

    • @dogrocketp1807
      @dogrocketp1807 4 года назад +1

      budgetguitarist.com It’s definitely a plastic compound unless someone changed it. Trust me on this. It might me a nylon compound. If you check the PRS forum, the first thing we do is change the SE nuts to either graph tech or core. I have 5 of them, all different models.

    • @budgetguitarist

      The S2 satin neck is a different profile - it's a bit thicker - and it almost feels like there's no finish on it. There is finish on it, of course, but it's not sticky and it's not slick - you feel almost like you can feel the grain in the wood. I really like it.

    The S2 line would be the best guitar for the money if they offered different neck profiles. I had mine re carved to a pattern thin profile, swapped out electronics to USA made and re colored and finished it. As a result, I sold my PRS core models and expensive Les Paul standard. I spent less than $30 re dying and re finishing the guitar and it looks better than most their core models. The recarve PRS did for $600 including shipping. Basically if you could get different neck profiles on the S2 you can make them look and sound as good and better than a 4 - 10k guitar for less than $100 bucks including electronic upgrades. Same applies to Gibson Guitars. A Les Paul tribute can look and sound as good as a custom shop LP for under $100. They are easy to sand, color and refinish and you have all the high quality woods. It is the best route to take if one has a little faith to attempt the task.

But I could play the S2 stock and still enjoy it. The neck pickup is still stock.

      That's a tough question, because neck feel is very personal. Honestly, the best way to figure it out is kind of difficult - if you play a guitar for about an hour, you'll find out if your left hand is cramping or not. I personally find thinner necks easier to play. I'd strongly recommend spending as much time trying each neck as possible. If not, a good return policy would help.

      That's a tough question. It depends on what's comfortable to the player, which is hard to guess. The SE Custom 24 would maybe be a better neck, because it's a little thinner, but some players just like a thicker neck. Best advice is to play a guitar with a thin neck nonstop for 30 minutes. Do the same with a thicker neck. Whichever one makes you hand cramp less, go with that one.

      It honestly depends on the wood the guitar was made with. Just like a fingerprint, no two woods have the exact same grain pattern. Some grain patterns are higher quality and more suitable for guitar necks than others. Personally a few years ago I owned a prs se singlecut in alpine white, made in 2014 and it rarely went out of tune, and also had better sound, clarity, and resonation than other guitars of the same model and year. Most people don’t realize that because of wood grain and inconsistencies in pickup windings no 2 guitars sound or even perform exactly like another. Some will be slightly muddier while others with slight more clarity, some will hold tune better or worse than others, and some will have longer or worse resonance than others.although that being said, American Paul reed smith are built with an obsessive attention to detail so of course you are more likely to have more consistency between like models than you would from foreign factories
