I think over and above all of your videos, this one really shows what a brilliant watercolor artist you are! My God this blew me away, This one was way beyond my skill level❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥🥇🥰👍🏻
Very beautiful hopefully your wife won't be too upset about taking her beautiful cherry tomatoes lol. Love your dad jokes or my case mom jokes. Ha. Have a great day
The thing that amazes me is the base colours go on all I see is a mess. And then you make it look amazing. I wind up with something that looks cartoony, and if I'm lucky it may resemble Beatrix Potter cartoony. The way you layered the colours on the tomato blew my mind, because you did it in the stages that a tomato ripens. Yellow green to orange to red, and I just never thought to use those colours in that order. If you ever think to write a book featuring your watercolour paintings I'd certainly buy a copy just to study them.
Oh my gosh, what a fabulous painting. I can’t even imagine trying this. I love the effect of negative painting but I always get lost trying to do it. I would love to see sort of a beginner’s guide to negative painting.
Gosh! I’m so glad I found your channel. So much information packed into a short video. I especially loved the method of being able to see your lines after the initial wash. I often lose mine so I’ll be trying that one. Also comforting to know that someone of your experience and skill levels still comes across the odd challenge. Thank you 🙏
Thank you for sharing! I love all of your videos and I have learnt soooooo much about watercolor and drawing techniques from you! This video indeed inspires me on the next drawing. ☺️thank you again for keep making these amazing videos!
Gorgeous example! I was literally holding my breath to see if you'd keep the yellow reflection on the right side of that first tomato 😆. So satisfying! Thanks for reiterating the lesson on using analagus colors to keep the colors vibrant, I'm still learning how to handle shadows. I've enjoyed the silver brushes for years thanks to your recommendations. Enjoy the rest of your summer! 1 Corinthians 10:31
Oh that’s simply beautiful leaves and cherry tomatoes! It was a wonderful surprise from your landscapes. I am surprised by the technique that you used to do an all over wash with the watercolor pencils and then using the color pencils with the watercolor. I have done a Red & Green Tomatoes painting without any watercolor pencils or color pencils. I’m definitely going to have to give this technique a try. Your teaching style is a joy to watch & learn from. Thanks again for making watercolor painting fun and challenging. Tell your wife well done on growing tomatoes this summer. Our didn’t make it ever, even with watering due to the excessive heat we are experiencing now in Mississippi.
This is gorgeous. Thank you for the tips about using analogous colors to maintain color intensity (as opposed to using complements or neutral tones). That was new for me, and I can't wait to try it out. You make it look easy-maybe cut that out?! ;-) Or maybe throw in a quick clip of you breaking a sweat at least?
it is funny; I did the slow pace on the wc pencil blinked and saw you put in an entire vignet; my brain went; then why the fiddeling; untill I saw I missed the masking part. Note to self; do not reach for coffee or blink when watching :P nicely done Steve, I usualy find myself struggeling in what to paint as much as choise of paper lol
Beautiful! I remember my art teacher in high school teaching us about looking at ALL the colors that often make up whatever we see. This is so basic, but critical for anyone desiring to paint in a more accomplished way, whether as a serious hobbyist or professionally. I recall that you used to teach art 🖼 and I can sometimes hear that “art teacher” in you come out…and that’s a good thing. 👍Thanks, Steve!
Amazing painting of your wife's cherry tomatoes. You made the leaves look so easy to paint. The dark green background made all pop. Thank you for showing us your great skill.
It was beautiful to watch the tomatoes ripening before my eyes! The colours reflect the ripening stages, which makes sense when you think about it. Thanks for helping me to see tomatoes 🍅!
Pure magic! Those are the only words I can say to express how I felt as you applied each brush stroke. From the deep greens accentuating each of the leaves to the bright yellows under the warm and cool reds of each tomato. Just pure magic. I must try this, just to challenge myself. Your talent is beyond amazing. Thanks ever so much for sharing.
Congratulations to Mrs. Mind on those gorgeous tomatoes! I understand why you wanted to paint them! This video was very helpful - from the background treatment and leaves to developing the tomato colors and shadows. I can’t wait to paint some tomatoes of my own!
Thank you for reminding me of the analogous shadow method… must put up a sticky note in my studio. This was such a fun painting to watch come to life. Beautiful tomatoes!
Gorgeous. Thank you. You were the first Y/T channel I ever subscribed to, and over the years I've watched your work, you haven't disappointed. Thanks again. from Oz
Wow, that was wonderful! I greatly admire your skill and your paintings but these beautiful, vibrant tomatoes may just be my favorite. I need to remember that use of analogous colors.
Wow, wow, wow! This is truly exquisite..... You really are a master, be it tomatoes, treetrunks, flowers or landscapes or anything in between. Thank you for this gorgeous demo, dear Steve - it is so satisfying to watch you make magic with your brushes and pencils.
I have followed you since your first utube video. This one is my all time favorite. I am a detailed realistic painter so that may explain why this is my favorite of all the videos you've done. I learn something new with each one. You made my day. Kathryn
Good point about the analogous colors. That's easy to forget when you're just thinking "ah, yes. Now for the shadows". Lol, even though my cousins were extras in Killer Tomatoes, I've never made the effort to see the film...
This shows the Miracle of Painting, You wanted to do a little Vignette and in the it became a Masterpiece. Sweet, delicious Tomatos...One could almost want to take a Bite 😉
Sensei , in a couple weeks I'm going camping and I'm taking 100% cotton paper with me Thank you for all the input, I don't get to water color too often but every time I want to, I make sure I listen to as much as I can by you before I do, taxi driving don't leave much relaxed time to do any color much less water color, that I absolutely like best to enjoy, Greek Island most are the same this one is sandy sparse foliage much ocher right down in to the red ochers that the saltwater brings out just at the wet points, I do believe I have all the right colors, should I narrow them down limit, I got this sweet olive green by Rembrandt plenty of yellows even some Indian yellow, a one inch soft brush and a pointy soft brush that also can carry plenty,,I don't know why also a Filbert is calling me out 🤣 🙏🌊🔱🌪🌪🌪
Thanks for this, Steve. I watched as you painted those amazing leaves, and thought, "Wow!!" I watched life being breathed into those tomatoes, and I thought, "Wow! I think I need to get out my paints and do some refresher work on glazing!" I do it, but it's a long time that I did it for still life. I have to add that because of circumstances, it's quite a while since I did any painting of my own - it's been mostly sketching and coloured pencil, and prepping work for the students... Once it's cooler, I'm determined to be out there painting again, in part because of your masking fluid video and this one, both re-wetting my appetite for big, fluid washes on big watercolour paper and beautiful glazes.... Thank you again, Steve, for this, reminder of what I've been missing and for the verses you add at the end.
This was very helpful. As I grow tomatoes and watercolor you’re speaking to me. I love the background effect. You are my first teacher and I still learn the most from your videos. Thanks for sharing your talent. God bless.
I sketched a grouping of currant tomatoes from a photo of one of my plants weeks ago because I loved the colors and light. It’s still sitting on my table unpainted because I’ve been unsure where to start. This was so helpful and timely!
Thank you. The way you brought this to life is amazing. I am very inspired. The negative painting really stuck in my mind. I will practice it today on a sunflower plant picture I took yesterday. Again thank you 🙏🏻
Thank you for this wonderful video. So inspiring! Your way of teaching helps so much! It makes me feel I can actually give it a try, because I’ve got your expert instructions to listen to and watch.
Hi Steve. Such patience. I’m curious how long it took to paint this wonderful piece. I’ve been following you for ages, and this piece explains everything you need to know about watercolour
I think over and above all of your videos, this one really shows what a brilliant watercolor artist you are! My God this blew me away, This one was way beyond my skill level❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥🥇🥰👍🏻

Great video as always but god you had me laughing with the killer tomatoes vignettes. Blast from the past🤣🤣🤣
Love, love, love it when younwalkmus through a painting and your processes…🇨🇦👍🏻
Your vibrant color techniques make so much sense! Thank you. PS I also liked your "Dad joke" - Tomato paste for a broken tomato. Oy!
The thing that amazes me is the base colours go on all I see is a mess. And then you make it look amazing. I wind up with something that looks cartoony, and if I'm lucky it may resemble Beatrix Potter cartoony. Love the painting and love the Bible verse! ❤️🙏🏻
Lovely work on the tomatoes and the leaves were so well done considering how complicated they are.
This is very beautiful makes me want to break out of my cubicle to go home and paint!
A you are amazing. I wasn’t really interested in tomatoes 🍅 but thought I’d watch and Learned so much. Thank you
Beautiful painting ,thankyou,Steve, always something to learn.
It’s past tomato season down here in the Deep South East Texas. What a wonderful way to keep them in season in a way.
Oh my gosh, what a fabulous painting. I can’t even imagine trying this. I love the effect of negative painting but I always get lost trying to do it. I would love to see sort of a beginner’s guide to negative painting.

You make it look easy-maybe cut that out?! ;-) Or maybe throw in a quick clip of you breaking a sweat at least?
I liked that suggestion probably the most!
PS: Sometimes I think Steve actually paints that fast! 😏
Looks good enough to eat!

Dad jokes AND great tutorial! 2 for the price of 1 😆
Wonderful piece!👍
I was just trying to figure out how to deal with the massive amount of texture on leaves so what a great video.

Amazing. Thank you so much 😊
Green leaves and their veining always make my head explode. Thanks for sharing your process around those. Beautiful work, as always!
I think Reece would look good with a cherry tomato in each eye socket.
😂
Love it

I wish you new works... 👌👌👌
Absolutely love this. You have set a fire under me to get to my studio with tomatoes in hand! Thanks for the inspiration. ❤️🙏🏻❤️

Encouraging video and the verse at the end always seems appropriate too. Thanks

You certainly produced a work of art from that bit of produce! Beautiful!

Just gorgeous! Always a pleasure to watch you paint. 😊
I love botanical paintings and this was a step above most. Thanks

Absolutely beautifully done!!
This is gorgeous! Love the textures, rich oranges and subtle greens. Makes it extra special when painting something from your own garden.
Ok ,keep pains Grey in a separate bag for the trip, might need it for a night seen 🤣🙏
This was very helpful. As I grow tomatoes and watercolor you’re speaking to me. I love the background effect. You are my first teacher and I still learn the most from your videos. Thanks for sharing your talent. God bless.
Brilliant new to water colour really helpful
Very inspiring, thank you. Especially how to include those pencils. I have some intense I never use.
Lovely!
Awesome info; especially the tomatoes! 😎🎉🥰
Excellent instructions and explanations! Thank you Steve! Hope you are enjoying your summer!
This amazing! I could just reach out and pick those tomatoes. Thank you for this and all your videos!
I love it! I always struggle with the shadows - everything is either too bright, or too gray ...
Absolutely Brilliant - loved watching the maestro at work. 🙏🙏
You have given so many great ideas in just this one video! Thank you for all your hard work.
Really enjoyed how you brought in all the different shades. Great job!
Excellent looks like a vintage seed packet cover or botanical print for a book.
I sketched a grouping of currant tomatoes from a photo of one of my plants weeks ago because I loved the colors and light. It’s still sitting on my table unpainted because I’ve been unsure where to start. This was so helpful and timely!

Hi Steve. Such patience. I’m curious how long it took to paint this wonderful piece. I’ve been following you for ages, and this piece explains everything you need to know about watercolour
5-6 hours. A couple hours alone were just spent working out the pencil drawing and composition.
