Hi Phil, thanks for the great presentation! But I just noticed one tiny thing: the shear strain in direct shear box is actually mainly limited in the shearing plane, a very narrow gap. Thus it's not that easy to get its magnitude. The expression you gave dx/h0 stands as a nominal or average shear strain for the whole specimen. Nevertheless dx/h0 still works for the purpose of determining peak shear stress.
Hi CristoClear, thanks for that. I've not heard of, or had any experience with, shear box tests on wood. I suppose you mean wood pellets, or dust? A shear box test is only useful for granular material. For strength tests on larger whole samples of wood, I suspect the orientation of the fibers with respect to the principal stress axis is important. Hello please help me.. I test disposal material. The shear stress of material keep reduce after peak, and not showing the stabel displacement after that (I mean I cannont define the residual parametes).

Is slippage between the two cells/boxes accounted? Can it be measured in the test?
