VAST is actually one guy similar to how NIN is Trent Reznor. His name is Jon Crosby, he is a mult-instrumentalist & with the exception of very few parts of these songs (like the chants) he actually composed, recorded, produced, played the various instruments and did all the vocals on this album himself. This album actually dropped in 1998. He puts together a touring band to play live with him as needed. He was only 22 when he made this. VAST constantly puts out albums every few years, but this is the only one that really “sounds” like this to me.
It was released in 1998 and features many elements of world music. This is honestly one of the most brilliant albums I have ever heard and I will gush over it all day.
I've loved this song for ages.. for me it doesn't get old. But I am curious how it stands up to fresh ears, all these years later.... guess I'm about to find out. 😌
This song not only kicks ass buts it's pure Art, for me it took listening to it twice to really hear how awesome it is.. thanks for the reaction video...
Fantastic song, with bulgarian folk choir backing vocal. The singer-songwriter is Jon Crosby. I was a huge fan for a long time. Hey from Hungary/East-Europe. 🖖🏼 (Listen to Senorita by Vast too.)
I was 19 when this song came out. That was a good time in my life and so hearing this song again (which I do every once in a blue moon) brings me back there. Interesting to see someone react to it since it's not a super popular song/band. I own (and like) the first three VAST albums, but after that pretty much forgot they existed until a couple years ago when I heard She is Murder. I'm not sure why I forgot about them. But this (Touched) is a great song for its period, since the 90s was this strange (in a cool way) eclectic mashing together of various things. Lot of tribal and electronic stuff going on in that era. Anyway I subbed based just on this. Although I found your stuff by watching a couple of your NIN reactions.
Thanks matey!!!!!!Really appreciate you taking time out of your day to react to a request from a lesser known band (there is only 1 other reaction on youtube!) you are a man of your word which shows integrity and i salute you. VAST (an acronym for Visual. Audio.Sensory.Theatre)is basically a one man band like Reznor from NIN. Jon Crosby basically writes and performs everything. He came on the seen as a child rock guitar prodigy in guitar rock magazine at 13 and was recording demos at that early age performing all instruments and sampling things like Gregorian monk chants. His debut album (which "touched" is from) was described by Lars Ulrich as the best debut album he had heard in very long time. I stumbled across Vast from a track on one of those free compliation cds you get in Kerrang magazine. Never looked back. The song i requested is one that did get some airplay back in 98 and was used on some movie trailers like "The Beach" so the song has got over a million views on youtube. Its a band that is very eclectic in its genres ranging from industrial metal to stadium rock(like U2) to almost acoustic country. Its a band which i feel should be huge and they do have a very loyal fanbase who feel a bit precious about him as not many people are aware of him. Cult bands are like like for the fans. I used to work in a record store and i remember putting on the third album "nude" and within 5 minutes sold every copy we had including the one in the shops record player! If you did likke it you should listen in your own time (no need to react) as from reading a few pages from your book i feel lyrically there is some connection there. Especially a song called "winter in my heart" or "flames" Again huge thanks. And even if only 10 people hear it, it means at least 10 people might discover a new band they like. In terms of your channel you have to do some "Tool" reactions. It is guaranteed to increase your youtube hits. Thats why all these rap reacts to rock or housewives doing reaction are doing Tool. Because it will get 100s of views. This should increase your subscribers and so on. Looking forward to your podcast in April. Peace out from a rainy day in the peak district, derbyshire UK.
Thank you so much for the info!!! And yes.. I’m well aware Tool would bring in the views.. Unfortunately, Tool is in my top 5 favorite bands and i’ve heard everything to hear, MANY times over... My best friend and I listened to their entire catalog in one single night many summers ago and it was over from there. OBSESSED SINCE THEN. \m/.
@@owenjacobs65 i hear ya so what you need to do is react to some live Tool performances you haven't seen. "Sober" from Reading Festival is a good one. That way your still being true to your reaction as well as popping up on the radar of anyone searching for Tool reactions. Metallica live performances you haven't seen would also not tarnish your integrity and bring in views. Keep it up. Thanks again buuuuuddddyyyy!
@ yo mo I heard this band ages ago on some sampler disc and it was the best take-away of all the samplers I've heard over the years. Do they still make sample discs anymore? My interest was peaked because of the mixing and layering work and kept because of Jon Crosby's sensual sounding voice. He sounded, to me, like Jim Morrison with Robert Smith's writing sensibilities. Anyone who can self produce work like that deserves attention, right? Why do some bands make it and others don't regardless of the level of talent or commitment? I suppose the real question is, do we as fans want them to be as popular as they deserve? I enjoyed the cult-like secrecy and the ability to show receptive music fans (cool people) something unique and unifying. I loved the conversations it would start. I feel like a true music fan always states opinion and experiences with music with "I love" more than "I hate", yknow and that's what I usually found - excitement and energy. Because of V.A.S.T. lesser exposure? P.S. Always buy band t shirts a size up, fans out there. Show the love but don't cut the neck cause they(in general) dont have lady sizes, just saying.
I saw this album's release show live and it was crazy how good his voice is. It was the first time I heard a vocal sound better live than recorded and mastered. I love this album!!
I love VAST! This is from their self titled debut which came out in '99. A Perfect Circle is somewhat similar. The other VAST song you should check out is Turquoise. Also 16 Psyche by Chelsea Wolfe.
I usually listen to VAST - Touched..... followed by Vast - Flames. I think of my girlfriend and all she went through with me and that she has PTSD because of how I was but she was with me even through my mother dying of cancer and cried at the funeral once she seen I was able to finally tear up/open up. When listening to these songs it makes me think even of the good things we went through and all the things we have in common. Makes me value more pair-bonding, the connection and its significance while going through life. Makes me wanna do better for her because so far I've only given her shit and its unfair.
Lars (Metallica) supposedly thought it was one of the best debuts he'd ever heard. Some tracks had music videos aired on MTV at the time (around 2000). The first two albums are best, the untitled debut with this track is the heaviest, with the most industrial and alt rock elements. The next albums, Music for People, Nude, and April (2007) were decent but a bit more mellow. I think the artist eventually took a long rest before changing his style. I was certain VAST's Pretty When You Cry or Touched were on either the Donnie Darko or Requiem for a Dream movies, but after a search I think it's just because I watched those movies alot around that same time as a student.. As for soundtracks, the only one I've ever really liked was the Spawn one, a mix of modern rock-metal and electronic (best track Filter and Crystal Method Trip Like I Do imo), but quality headphones are always a bonus.. (I'm still browsing)
First heard this song in the show Angel which is also great... nice video keep up the good work!! My own suggestion for an obscure one which is great, would be Outro by M83!

One of the greatest songs ever!! Jon Crosby is an absolutely brilliant artist.
This is one of the great songs ever! While you listen more. You like it more!
Jon Crosby is an under appreciated genius, he did 5 albums of awesome music, he hasnt been active for a long time, but his catalog is superb

A friend of my made me to listen this music. The year was 2002. Thank you Fernando for show me this song.
Nobody really reacts to VAST, which is a shame.
Genial me gusta mucho el Rock y Metal Industrial 👍🏽
These sounds, came from another planet, before the end of the world
