I Do NOT mean to depress anyone here, but my wonderful beautiful mother died 3 weeks ago which has left a HUGE hole in my heart. However; my beautiful mother made me promise I continue learning my artwork as she knew how much it gives me great pleasure & meaningfulness & Mum knew I follow you Malcolm & Mum is right. I am finding GREAT Comfort continuing your classes as my Art means so much to me & you Malcolm are helping me to cope through one the most traumatic times of my life. Thank you. You encourage and make art easy to learn and to follow. This means I have learnt so much , my art skills are vastly improving & I am improving & producing better artwork. Thank YOU ❤
BeeBee, so sorry for your loss. Mom is right, art can be a lifesaver in times of grief and stress. It is a meditation that will always connect you to her. ❤❤❤
My sincere condolences. Yes, at first, you cannot even think of picking up a brush. But then you know you are honoring your mother's memory by creating art. Then, the healing begins.
So sorry for your loss. If your mum's encouraging you to press on with your art then she's left you a real gift. Literally the gift that keeps on giving. And don't forget " Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just turn up and get to work." - Chuck Close
You pastel work is VERY good, you've given me something to think about 👍 , I must find mine and give it a try with a new approach thanks to you 🤗👍♥️ From Frances uk
Thank you very much Malcolm, for teaching us discovering new and new interesting things.Your painting is so beautiful and exciting that I immediately tried it myself. In the end I covered it with a protective varnish spray, but now i find that I can apply a new layer of highlights on it😎😄
Thanks for this demonstration Malcolm. I have never seen anyone using pastel in quite this way, but it does create a liveliness to the scene. I believe I will try this en plein air as it would certainly involve less hauling of materials. Thanks for going out of your comfort zone, and succeeding! Also, I find your videos have a calming , contemplative quality, which I enjoy!
That looks like so much fun! I have some pastels in the back of a drawer somewhere, I’m inspired to give them a try. If you find you have too much pastel on a section of your painting, can you scrape it off like you would oils, and then continue on top of that with a different colour? Could one use a blade or old credit card ? Thank you once again for a lovely demonstration Malcolm 😘
I bought some Sennelier pastels a while back but found them to be just too soft for me. I know it was Edgar Degas' chosen pastel but I really couldnt work with them. No offense Mr Degas. I love pastel artworks. They have such immediacy and vibrancy when in tne right hands.... definitely not my hands though! 😂 You dont seem to have any problems though, Malcolm 👍
Not if I can help it. Fixative seems to change the color for me. There is paper like glassine to cover the work. I also use baking paper to protect the surface. Try to avoid storing it under heavy objects. If I want to display it then matte and glass is still the best.
A mop would be too soft I suspect. If you want a more blended look, then technique adjustment would be best. Also less contrasting values between colors.
Funny, I feel just the opposite, but I have lots of experience and many different brands of soft pastels and papers and know how to control them from years of practice. My few attempts at oil pastels have turned into hopeless smears. It's all what you're experienced in using.

Wonderful medium. Very vibrant and eyecatching! 💕
It really is a powerful medium used this way.
@@MalcolmDewey Would you consider a demonstration on charcoals?
@@janinem3280 that would be something new for me.
@@MalcolmDewey I have every confidence you will be masterful 😄
Very nice Malcolm, love your spontaneous approach and beautiful colors, thanks ❤

Great watching your demo! Vibrant painting and well done on that paper that has restricted tooth!Interesting mark making!
Thank you very much! Yes, something like pastelmat would have had more mileage 😄
I'm curious how much medium an art gum would lift if there is too much colour in an area, wonderful videos Malcolm! very inspirational
Good question!

Best to use a bristle brush to get it off.
@@soperpa2 a brilliant thank you 😘

I love it
Thank you 😊
Very interesting. J’s pastels not in US yet. Looking forward to more pastel paintings.
Thanks. Try this link to their US site www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/jackson-s-handmade-soft-pastels

I have the same issue with those soft pastels. That is why I prefer Unison. These Jacksons are also robust.
How do you preserve your soft pastel works? Do you spray fixative?
Not if I can help it. Fixative seems to change the color for me. There is paper like glassine to cover the work. I also use baking paper to protect the surface. Try to avoid storing it under heavy objects. If I want to display it then matte and glass is still the best.
@@MalcolmDewey Jackson’s do an own brand fixative which does not affect the colour. I use it and it seems fine. Love your work.
Very Van Gogh!
Artist you are.Could you have blended colors with a mop,to remove lines?
A mop would be too soft I suspect. If you want a more blended look, then technique adjustment would be best. Also less contrasting values between colors.

I always take the papers off my pastels and break them in half so I can use the broad side for ‘brush’strokes..
Yes, I get to that too pretty soon.
What country do you live in Malcolm?
I love oil pastels. Soft pastels are so messy...and the paintings smear so easily😢😮 for me anyway😮
Funny, I feel just the opposite, but I have lots of experience and many different brands of soft pastels and papers and know how to control them from years of practice. My few attempts at oil pastels have turned into hopeless smears. It's all what you're experienced in using.
South Africa. Pastels are a challenge, but manageable. Storage solutions and friction-less covering is important if you do a lot of them.
