Technological Exacerbated Oppression-How students can push Big Tech towards a more just model

Technological Advancements have historically been used to perpetuate apartheid and genocide, and the same is true today. From social media platforms amplifying calls for genocide, like what happened to Meareg Amare Abrha whose killing was orchestrated on Facebook during Tigray genocide, to autonomous weapons first experimented on Palestinians and exported elsewhere, technology is still the epicenter of apartheid and genocide. Prestigious schools and universities like MIT and Stanford act as military contractors building death making machines, and/or hedge funds investing in the companies that do. Student organizing against these practices has historically been essential in advocacy and activism against these relationships, and the same is true today. Workers across some of the most influential corporations in the world have been, and continue to be, central in pushing their employers away from oppressive and destructive business practices and relationships. In this talk, Timnit will cover some of the ways in which technology is used to perpetuate apartheid and genocide, and movements fighting back and charting a different technological future.
