      Thanks! That's the thing about bagged collection. Between the fast paced throwing into the hopper and popping packer action it's my favorite to watch.

    There aren't that many sights more satisfying to me than one of these DSNY 5000s quickly idling through a full hopper of big 'ol bags, piled up waist high. Interesting you said the crews weren't allowed to give permission to film, that might explain a DSNY crew who was apprehensive about being on RUclips. I don't care what anyone says about how new and therefore boring these trucks are, DSNY still rules king of city run collections in my book, and I'm definitely stocking up on footage next time I get a chance to go to NYC. That split rear 5000 was pretty entertaining reminds me of Nick's videos of the same body that JRM owns. Heil made an interesting design choice by using the 4000 packer system you mentioned for the split 5000. It makes me wonder why they didn't want to use the more standard 5000 hopper track that curves forward a bit. I'm looking forward to your full video of it.

    • @georgewuzheer
      @georgewuzheer  7 лет назад +1

      The hydraulics at idle are sweet. As an enthusiast I can see how some would get bummed out about the lack of revs but having spent the past 6 months in the world's loudest Lodal which needs to rev the engine for just about any function I would kill for at-idle operation. Obvious safety factors aside, it leaves you so much less tired at the end of the day, no sore throat from yelling, just a much nicer experience. Oh and saves fuel. Have you seen the video of the supposed DSNY prototype split rear loader? It had a Goliath-like swing link design. The problem with using the 5000 tailgate is the swing links are outside of the hopper. Trying to fit all that between the two hoppers on a recycle truck wouldn't leave much room for the hoppers themselves. Another plus of the 4000 is it's pretty basic and cheap, easy to adapt and Heil was (at the time) building about a zillion of them.

    • @trashmonster26
      @trashmonster26 7 лет назад +1

      I haven't seen that, but I'd love to check it out. Have you see the pictures of what the DSNY guys are calling a "third hopper"? Basically a recycler bucket in between the cab and body of the split 5000s for organics to save fuel, time, and manpower.

    Halfway through the video I had to jump on Google Maps and the DSNY website to check out a couple of things and get a look at the whole area... I don't know the exact NYC borderlines, but I got the idea it's a bloody monster location, and what an insane workforce with crew and equipment combined!!! It's almost hard to comprehend 2200+ garbage trucks for one place - I imagine they have multiple yards in central locations like LA? Or is it some massive multi storey truckpark?! haha It would be a fun job being the fleet manager, how about organising upgrades - "We're over budget this year so we'll only be able to get 200 new RLs" :P hehe I watched Watsonator's video a while back now, but at no point did I find myself bored watching this, just that action you can't get enough of, even enjoyed the sweepers :D It's kind of entertaining that NYC, as enormous as it is and strict as you might think it would be, has a simple manual collection service for residential, just piles of black and transparent bags for mixed rubbish and streamed recycling. Mind you I guess the area isn't exactly suitable for ASLs (hell no!) or FLs tipping lines of dumpsters (what do those few FLs do anyway?). I don't even know the basics about NYC waste services, but is it a situation where certain regions attract specific collection systems and bin types, or is it simply a case where the entire city is subject to piles of bagged materials for collection? I'm a bit foggy on Scott's video, but I vaguely recall crates/tubs for recycle, maybe I've got that wrong, but I would've thought this would be a workable alternative to bags for recycling, that way it's all loose and you can still see what's what, might make the streets look tidier too. Speaking of the recycling, I reckon those 4060s are wild pieces of machinery, love the independent packers working out of sync, just cool seeing split RLs on the odd occasion... actually also makes me wonder why NYC hasn't gone to single stream :O Piles of black bags along the streets of NYC is pretty cool, I can just imagine turning down every street and seeing a Heil reversed against the kerb (and sometimes blocking the road) while the team load up the hopper. Then come those regular pack cycles and all those popping, squealing and hissing bags as the air gets forced out of them. Kind of am bummed these trucks work at idle, but mind you the cycles are still pretty swift and I imagine there would be some serious considerations when it comes to noise disturbance for the DSNY operations, especially those of night. I reckon the triple shifts are epic too, curious to know how they zone the different services times too, like do they restrict daytime to fully suburban areas and night for the middle of the city or could trucks operate anywhere at any time and not in any regular weekly timeframe? I noticed on the DSNY website is says everything must be ready to go by 4pm the day before scheduled service, almomst saying it could get done anytime between 4pm and 9pm the next day! :S With the triple shifts too, do a lot of the trucks get worked essentially 24hrs during the week or do they only run single 8 hour shifts per day? Couldn't help but notice no cart tippers, kick bars or winches on these trucks... do any RLs have some kind of lifter mechanisms? Looks like that guy at 4:03 gave you the finger too, spotted he was pretty aware of your videoing-in-their-direction status. One thing I have to do now is check out some of these related DSNY videos, especially keen to learn about where all the stuff goes after collection!!! Another ripper video George, sorry I didn't have more to say :/

    Seriously, our “best” city couldn’t find a better solution than piling trash on the side of the road, and having 2 humans perform a strenuous task, picking it up and throwing it in? That’s poor use of human capital, that’s an antiquated way of doing that, I implore NYC to do better

    • @georgewuzheer
      @georgewuzheer  7 лет назад +3

      One truck comes by for garbage, another for recycling. They're sorting the recycling into the two different hoppers, paper/fibers in one side and glass/plastic/metal containers in the other. On heavier routes a separate truck comes for each recycling stream. Food waste collection was in the initial trial stage for select areas when this was filmed in July 2015. Overall, no recycling isn't a big priority in New York. Or generally anywhere outside the bigger cities on the west coast of the US.
