I watch a lot of restoration hot wheels and matchbox videos. You sir are one of the best. I like the rivets and Axelrod touch. Most as you know are using screws. The base was a cool touch. Beautiful paint work. I learned a lot that I will apply to my skills on my restorations. Stay well. Thanks.
Was a very fascinating video and the restoration was a marvel. I watch a lot of these restorations and have done a few myself. My advice is, really take your time you will achieve excellent results doing so. Never go to heavy on the silver touches. I prefer restorations to keep close to original finishes. This one was a gem.
I like your style. I too tend to keep the base plates with the original finish. As you say it gives a little insight into the age of the model. I really enjoyed watching this video! Thanks for showing.
I had #150 when I was a boy. I saw the real thing on the streets of Belfast in 1962, which is why this resto is so endearing to me. Thanks for preserving the play patina of the baseplate, as a way of honouring the child who originally played with this Rolls Royce Silver Wraith. Well done!
Beautiful work sir. I learned, perhaps 50 years ago, to always start your aerosol spray can off beyond one end of your project and hold a constant spray volume and move quickly until you are off the other end of your project. Lessens chances of rough paint surfaces from droplets hitting and staying. This is the third of your youtube restoration projects I have watched and am impressed with each that you have done. Keep up the fantastic work.
Excellent presentation and a beautifully sympathetic restoration of a classic model. I'm new to die cast restoration and I hope I get some results even nearly as good as this.
This turned out very well as a video and your organization skill and voice control were perfect to this task. I was surprised to see that you did not sand or use fine steel wool on the casting after removing the paint, as many people seem to do that. That would have provided an even finer finish to the paint, but it may have exceeded your goal of restoration to the original level, since it would have produced a finer than original finish. The tires look excellent, and you replaced that broken or bent front axle. Great work. It looks quite impressive over all. Very relaxing presentation which invited us into your activities and you allowed sufficient drying and curing time between stages. If this is your first effort, then all I can say is that you have already achieved a very high level of work and your love for this activity shows at all stages. Thank you for inviting me to share your love for these toys.
Thanks, and apologies for late reply. I take all your points on board and I am still refining the way I finish the body before painting. I would like the look to remain 'original' which was not perfect - I don't want to pimp them to perfection (probably beyond my skill anyway). So pleased you enjoyed the video, very grateful for your kind comments ... David
David, Thank you very much for this video. As someone who had this model in the late 50's it was like being reunited with an old friend. The suspension system was such a big selling point at the time on this car, well done. Cheers, Chris Perry.
Thanks Chris, glad it tickled the old nostagia button. Yes, with the Corgi competition there was lots of innovation then. Appreciate the comments ... David
Great first restoration - I especially like leaving the base plate unrestored - it definitely shows the honest wear from many hour of play - thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise.
Nice result. Good to see a not excessively glossy finish. Modern clear coats give a 'glassy' look which is inappropriate in my opinion. You've done a good restoration of a 55 year old Dinky, well done!
Thanks Geof, I was worried that I should use more gloss - but I can't remember them being over-glossy. I felt the degree of gloss look right for toys of the 50s. Thanks for picking up on this. I have not had any comments that suggest my finish is not glossy enough, yours is the first positive comment on this subject - so thanks again ... David
Very good job and the new box is a lovely touch! 👍 I've got about a dozen of my late brother's Dinky/Corgi cars and there's a similar Wraith in there but with 'sparkly' headlights. I've not attempted a renovation yet but do need to pass them on. They are better off being appreciated by a collector or younger person than being stuffed away in a cupboard..
Nicely done David. I too remember receiving models like this as little ‘un. You’ve really given me some food for thought regarding some of those that I still have. Thank you.
hi I’m new to your channel and came across it by chance of watching model railway etc and one who do make models from scratch or make them from existing materials. I do have a few Dinky Toys that i have collected and was interesting to watch your own restoration of an old dinky Toy! I have now Subscribed and a Huge 👍 Thumbs Up 👍
Very enjoyable and brilliant first time attempt. Sure brought that RR from the brink of extinction. Nice work. I’m a fan of Dinky commercial vehicles so I’ll look forward to seeing one or two if you find any. Thanks. Was great watching.
As a Canadian (now stuck in the US ;-p ) I remember Dinky Toys as a child. Eventually they were rather subplanted by Matchbox and then Hotwheels. I'm glad that you plan to continue to restore them. :-)
Hi Christopher. That is interesting. Dinky toys in 1/43 (O gauge) were very popular here before Matchbox which came along in the mid 1950's. I remember them first appearing in the shops. They had a massive advantage over Dinky and Corgi in that they were pocket money prices - very affordable for children to buy. I always preferred the large scale but 00 gauge became more popular in the 1950s and matchbox were closer in scale ... Thanks, David
Growing up on Florida’s Spacecoast in the mid to late 1960s, my best friend’s father was a wealthy doctor who travelled the world extensively....as a result, my friend had quite a collection of both Dinky and Corgi cars.....while I was relegated to Matchbox and Hot Wheels. I use to cringe as he would launch his cars through Lincoln Log walls....while I was overly protective of my cars....and while I immaturely envied his collection, almost 6 decades later I still have all of my 200+ cars in storage.....I would guess that my friend does not! I appreciated watching you restore one of yours.....I especially liked that you minimally touched the base. The more of these videos I watch, the more tempted I am to restore some of mine! Thank you for sharing your experience!
Thanks , great story and what a collection of Matchbox and Hot Wheels - I bet they would make a wonderful display. Thanks for the comment, much appreciated ... David
A great restoration of one of Dinky's nicest models. I had this as a child - I was born in 1963 - and can remember playing with it on an area of the garden that was set aside for me. I love the suspension on these models. So simple, but made playing with them so much more fun. I like that you use Halfords' primer, too - It used, when physical effects were a thing in movies and TV, to be the industry standard paint to use on models of buildings and space vehicles. If you've ever seen any show with effects work featuring models, or any big sci-fi movie, made in the UK, or using UK effects people, chances are, that those models were painted with Halfords' grey or white primer. It's made to a very consistent standard, and takes punishment well. I've used it on models I've made as a main coat, and it weathers beautifully.
Appreciate the comments again Brian, many thanks. I agree the Halford's range of paints and primers have found their way into many a modelmakers toolbox - amateurs, like me, and professionals. I have always found it to be consistantly good. ... David
Absolutely brilliant. I believe you did a wonderful job restoring one of myfavorite models. Finding a Rolls or Bentley Dinky was an ongoing mission for me back in the early 60s. They were rather expensive here in the USA so talking my father into getting me one was quite a chore, but I did it. I still have the Bentley 60 years later. Sadly, the Rolls went missing years ago. Thanks for sharing your restoration! :)
Might I suggest in future use a spot of hot glue for affixing the front grille from the inside for ease of future removal of the grille and rear bumper and windscreen. Beautiful restoration. Cheers from the former colony of Canada.
That was a great effort for your first attemt. I guess I will now have to play catch-up on what else you have done. The roller looks great so onto the next one you have done.👍
Thanks Alan I have only a few completed at the moment. Another is being videoed and a stack more are waiting in the wings. Time has been tight for me this summer but there will be more to come 👍👍 ... David
The paints were really well matched, looking just right for the era. It's obvious you've already developed your eye for scale, I'm looking forward to your next restoration project.
I'm trying to build up the courage for my first restoration. Having seen this video and some of your newer ones, and knowing that it was your first gives me hope.Great job David.
Hi Walter - great you are thinking of your first restoration. I wish you the very best of luck with it - beware though, you could get hooked on it - like me 😁😁😁 ... David
Great work! I can see your passion through the whole process, you even print out the problems and good points of that model, and add history section to it. Really good!
Being a bit late on leaving a comment, just came across your video. I do like the idea to leave the base plate unrestored, preserving a bit of history. I got one in similar condition, apart from no bent axles, so i will leave it as is. Yours turned out really nice! Regards from Germany, Michael
My comment to you, is..... keep up the excellent work. From what I saw on the car boot sales last summer, you will never be out of a project. Barry.Devon
Congratulations upon a job very well done. I was delighted to see that you left the baseplate unpainted. You seem to have matched the colours to a nicety and the aftermarket parts look very much at home on the finished car. I was also much impressed by the finish you achieved on the glazing.
Excellent resto. I'm into Matchbox myself, but I like the spun metal wheels and rubber tyres: a nice touch. These 1960's castings were made at the height of quality from master model makers and artisans.
Great prep & paint . Cosmetic touches would compliment the respray. Chrome pen for boot, door handles and my favourite, flat red"tooth-pick" touches to rear brake lights. Tx for info on Perspex restoring.
Many thanks Malcolm. Couldn't see any chrome painted on the original, I checked quite a few photos. You are right about the rear lights - an oversite on my part that is now corrected - the original did have red rear lights (again photos back this up). Really appreciate the comments Regards ... David
Excellent job! I know some people don't add anything the original didn't have but personally I would do chrome handles, lights and a coach lining stripe decal. But this is personal preference. And the finished model looks superb!
the restoration is great! But what really amazes me about all these die cast restoration projects people are doing is that all these parts are out there to buy for them.
Very nice project, and well executed David. I appreciated your conservative approach so that the model looked like it would when it was first made. Leaving the base with its original worn coating was a lovely touch.Thank you for sharing.
A beautiful restoration David, I do enjoy these sort of projects when I come across them so I’ll look forward to more projects of this ilk from you. Paul
For your first build, I'm going to say a Great Job David. I wish I saw this video sooner. I really do enjoy your makeovers. Thank you
Many thanks Edward, much appreciated 👍

Hi Danny, thanks for the comments, really appreciated. So pleased you are finding it a help for your restorations. Stay well yourself ... David
Beautiful car, beautifully done. You did a SUPER job on that restoration.
Thank you very much Chris, such a nice comment - much appreciated ... David
Superb job. Beautiful color match. Leaving the "patina" on the base was an excellent choice. I also have one of these with white tires.
Thanks Howard - the kind of comment I like to hear. Checked out photos with white tyres - they look really good ... David
For a first restore Bravo. You nailed it. A joy to see another old toy back saved for display and enjoyment. Cheer's John
Thanks John, you are very kind. The Roller looks nice in the display cabinet - plenty of room for more !! ... David
Well done. Solid restore; very restrained and classic.
Thanks Lawrence, very much appreciated ... David

Hi, appreciate the comment, thanks. Glad to hear from someone who is doing the same with baseplates. I agree with what you say ... David
I had #150 when I was a boy. I saw the real thing on the streets of Belfast in 1962, which is why this resto is so endearing to me.
Thanks for preserving the play patina of the baseplate, as a way of honouring the child who originally played with this Rolls Royce Silver Wraith.
Well done!
Thanks Shaun, much appreciated. That's exactly how I feel about my baseplates ... David
Well done sir. You inspired me. I am starting with my first Dinky 152 Rolls Royce
Brilliant Johan, appreciate the comment and very good luck with your 152 restoration ... David
Wonderful restoration, David. I had one of these back in 1963 when I was twelve. Loved it then, and still love Dinkys and Corgis.
Thanks Ray, ahhh - those were the days!! - very much appreciated ... David
