DINKY 150 RESTORATION

  • A new modelling venture for me. Dinky Toys - their 'golden age' was in my pre-teen childhood. They were created by Frank Hornby in the 1930s as accessories for the Hornby O gauge train sets. They are 1/43 scale (at least the ones I am interested in are). I have not the room or the money O gauge layouts, but I can find interest in this one small aspect of it. I plan to make further 'restoration' videos - I do hope you like them.

    I watch a lot of restoration hot wheels and matchbox videos. You sir are one of the best. I like the rivets and Axelrod touch. Most as you know are using screws. The base was a cool touch. Beautiful paint work. I learned a lot that I will apply to my skills on my restorations. Stay well. Thanks.

    Was a very fascinating video and the restoration was a marvel. I watch a lot of these restorations and have done a few myself.
    My advice is, really take your time you will achieve excellent results doing so. Never go to heavy on the silver touches. I prefer restorations to keep close to original finishes. This one was a gem.

    This turned out very well as a video and your organization skill and voice control were perfect to this task.
    I was surprised to see that you did not sand or use fine steel wool on the casting after removing the paint, as many people seem to do that. That would have provided an even finer finish to the paint, but it may have exceeded your goal of restoration to the original level, since it would have produced a finer than original finish. The tires look excellent, and you replaced that broken or bent front axle. Great work. It looks quite impressive over all. Very relaxing presentation which invited us into your activities and you allowed sufficient drying and curing time between stages. If this is your first effort, then all I can say is that you have already achieved a very high level of work and your love for this activity shows at all stages. Thank you for inviting me to share your love for these toys.

    • @davidhyde4329
      @davidhyde4329  5 лет назад

      Thanks, and apologies for late reply. I take all your points on board and I am still refining the way I finish the body before painting. I would like the look to remain 'original' which was not perfect - I don't want to pimp them to perfection (probably beyond my skill anyway).
      So pleased you enjoyed the video, very grateful for your kind comments ... David

    Very good job and the new box is a lovely touch! 👍 I've got about a dozen of my late brother's Dinky/Corgi cars and there's a similar Wraith in there but with 'sparkly' headlights. I've not attempted a renovation yet but do need to pass them on. They are better off being appreciated by a collector or younger person than being stuffed away in a cupboard..

    Nice result. Good to see a not excessively glossy finish. Modern clear coats give a 'glassy' look which is inappropriate in my opinion. You've done a good restoration of a 55 year old Dinky, well done!

    • @davidhyde4329
      @davidhyde4329  5 лет назад

      Thanks Geof, I was worried that I should use more gloss - but I can't remember them being over-glossy. I felt the degree of gloss look right for toys of the 50s. Thanks for picking up on this. I have not had any comments that suggest my finish is not glossy enough, yours is the first positive comment on this subject - so thanks again ... David

    Beautiful work sir. I learned, perhaps 50 years ago, to always start your aerosol spray can off beyond one end of your project and hold a constant spray volume and move quickly until you are off the other end of your project. Lessens chances of rough paint surfaces from droplets hitting and staying. This is the third of your youtube restoration projects I have watched and am impressed with each that you have done. Keep up the fantastic work.

    Growing up on Florida’s Spacecoast in the mid to late 1960s, my best friend’s father was a wealthy doctor who travelled the world extensively....as a result, my friend had quite a collection of both Dinky and Corgi cars.....while I was relegated to Matchbox and Hot Wheels. I use to cringe as he would launch his cars through Lincoln Log walls....while I was overly protective of my cars....and while I immaturely envied his collection, almost 6 decades later I still have all of my 200+ cars in storage.....I would guess that my friend does not! I appreciated watching you restore one of yours.....I especially liked that you minimally touched the base. The more of these videos I watch, the more tempted I am to restore some of mine! A great restoration of one of Dinky's nicest models. I had this as a child - I was born in 1963 - and can remember playing with it on an area of the garden that was set aside for me. I love the suspension on these models. So simple, but made playing with them so much more fun. I like that you use Halfords' primer, too - It used, when physical effects were a thing in movies and TV, to be the industry standard paint to use on models of buildings and space vehicles. If you've ever seen any show with effects work featuring models, or any big sci-fi movie, made in the UK, or using UK effects people, chances are, that those models were painted with Halfords' grey or white primer. It's made to a very consistent standard, and takes punishment well. I've used it on models I've made as a main coat, and it weathers beautifully.

      Appreciate the comments again Brian, many thanks. I agree the Halford's range of paints and primers have found their way into many a modelmakers toolbox - amateurs, like me, and professionals. I have always found it to be consistantly good. ... David

    This is a lovely job. That's a top tip about using a nail-buffer to brighten up the glazing - I shall get one. I like the unrestored base - there is something rather delightfully nostalgic about that worn paintwork, so many were like that after a few miles around the carpet. The finished restoration completely captures the feel and spirit of a Dinky Toy of the era - not in any way customised or over restored.

      @@davidhyde4329 My pleasure entirely. I have to say that although I do admire (and covet!) mint condition models, I do rather enjoy the slightly "lived in" look of a model that has been enjoyed but looked after. That patina of a life being enjoyed and loved is one to wear with pride. My own collection is far from pristine and a lot of them have been repaired over the decades - they have each gained a history (albeit one usually entirely unknown to me), they're like old soldiers in retirement, the ones that survived the toy-boxes and sandpits!!
      I came across this video as I relatively recently finished working on one of these Wraiths that was in ropey condition. I'm afraid I cheated with the bumpers and fabricated new ones out of Isopon, so even though the finished car looks good, it can never pass as an original. I do enjoy making parts when I can, although sometimes it just isn't really possible to achieve. I also tend to hoard discarded bits as they have such a habit of coming in useful later on. That scrap RR grille from yours will surely find a new life on another model.
      Videos like this are so good to watch as everyone has their own approach to restorations and ideas and techniques for achieving the end results are always fascinating to see; I have learned so much from watching them. Thank you for making this video and sharing it.

      @@mikaelabowen5781 Thanks for such a full reply - I am new to this aspect of modelling, but this is exactly how I feel about my intended restorations. I nearly did not restore the Wraith when it arrived, I felt a strongly that I was about to destroy something. I did finally take the plunge but decided to preserve some of that history via the baseplate (I will continue to do this). It says that this car was not bought by a collector but by, or for, a child who has spent many hours playing with it. I think we share similar emotion.
      Some of my purchases will not be restored (I may do a video on non-restoration if I can think of an angle😊).
      Many thanks again - and you are right, the old RR grille is in the spares box ... David

      @@davidhyde4329 I like the idea of a video on not restoring a model! That would be such an original video. But you are right, unless one is going for the all-out as-new look, a light and sensitive touch is paramount when preserving the model's acquired identity (does that sound to pretentious in connection with an old toy car!?). I tend to think of it as like restoring antique furniture - the finished piece must be as beautifully done as possible, but not be so perfect as to be indistinguishable from a brand-new reproduction piece. Erasing damage and erasing age are two different things. But as you say, knowing when to step back and leave something untouched, paint chips, wear and tear, scuffs and rust all visible, is really worthwhile. In the past I have stripped and repainted models that I now dearly wish I had left untouched. I also have a few that other people have overpainted, when the original was in excellent condition, which I have spent a lot of time (in one instance the past forty years!!) in pondering how to remove Humbrol paint whilst leaving the original untouched. These dilemmas are part of what adds intrigue to the hobby.

    • @davidhyde4329
      @davidhyde4329  5 лет назад +2

      @@mikaelabowen5781 Thanks again. I have had a number of comments saying I should have stripped the baseplate, but I have many more who like the idea. You put it well, I can't see the point in restoring it 'perfectly' its never going to be 'new' again so why not show respect for its age. You do not sound pretentious to me, I agree totally. I have gone one step further in my latest offering - I have left some of the visible parts un-restored - that'll put the cat amongst the pigeons - lol ... David

    Great job. Love the finish on the body. I do feel that the base plate left with that patina gives away the restoration. I can't see how it could have been done better. No idea where MY old cars and things went. I had loads of Corgis and Matchbox and other items. Except for one weird exception. I had a copy of the book 'Kidnapped' told in picture panels, when I was about 11-ish. I couldn't resist adding some colour in one or two panels. Then like many of our childhood possessions, it 'disappeared'? Lo-and-behold, last year, I saw a copy on E-bay (nowhere near our area); and it said "Buy me" so I did. I have no idea how, but YES, it was MY old copy. I could tell by my colouring.
