    This is where I learned to ski. I don't see myself going there anytime soon, with a sunshine season pass and Lake Louise/pano plus card. Would be a trip down memory lane if I ever did go back though. Great memories there

      Yeah, if you have the LL/Pano card, not really any reason to come to Nakiska

    Nakiska will always have a soft-spot in my heart for its Olympic connection even if it wasn't even the first, second, third or even fourth choice to hold the alpine events there. Still a great all round resort that isn't busy but does need some TLC and upgrading/expansion perhaps to the North like was planned in the past... Trying to find the old expansion plan from the 1980's as well as the 1990's one that was more focused on the ill-fated Calgary 2010 Winter Games bid...

    I’ve been to quite a bit of mountains but I have to say Nakiska is my favourite by far we even named sour dog after it

    Another great video. I taught my son to ski there. The first year was great till it was shut down because of COVID but unfortunately the second year wasn’t so good. Bad snow and huge lines made it impossible to have a good time. They sold way to many season passes and the gold chair was closed a lot of ski racers.
    Here’s a question you might know. How come half the chairs are missing on the Olympic Chair. That would of been a huge help 2 seasons ago when you could only ride up with your family/group. Great vid as usual

      Honestly, I'm still not sure about their reasoning for removing half of Olympic's chairs. I've heard some places that it was to preserve the lift for longer (less chair grips interacting with the terminals, more spare chair grips, etc.). I've also heard though that it was to have 100% downloading on Olympic, wheres before I believe the downloading was 50%. I could be mistaken though.

    The video we've been waiting for has finally arrived. Still confuses me how the T-bar isn't open to the public.

      The platter is extremely steep. But I do wish they would at least let you hike up the terrain. Currently, if you are caught up there, they will take away your pass.

      @@Skier72 Dang. Maybe they could built a fixed grip lift going up there. I guess that's not their priority at the moment.

      @@idahoskilifts4242 That would be so cool to see. But there are two problems with a chairlift up there.
      1. RCR (the company that owns Nakiska) cares very little about re-investing in the resort or maintaining it. True, they did install Gold around 10 years back. But a look at their other mountains (as well as Nakiska) all need an overhaul.
      2. The area above Gold is very windy, and the snow often isn't that great. So a chair up there would probably not be open too much. As a side note, I would love to see Nakiska bring back the abandoned "Women's Downhill" ski run that is currently "out of bounds".

      Even when the resort first opened, it was listed as “temporary” on maps. Pretty sure it enters a bighorn sheep range that’s closed to the public all winter all along Mt. Allan. No way they’d be able to swing making it publicly accessible under their leasing terms.
      The women’s downhill and Bearspaw runs do occasionally get opened to the public, last I recall. Dunno if that’s changed. It was a real adventure as a kid taking the loooooong cat track.

    Later this month I am planning to drive to the Banff area to go skiing for 3-4 days. I am debating between Lake Louise, Sunshine Village or Mt. Norquay. I could try all of them but what would you say is the best

    • @Skier72
      @Skier72  Год назад

      Lake Louise for sure. Sunshine's also good, but it doesn't have the vertical that Louise does. Norquay only makes sense if you have, say half a day to kill and don't want to go to a bigger hill.

    I think you should have given a much better ranking to the location. It is really easy to get to and from. It is also quite easy to access in terms of parking and congestion compared to the other ski resort in Alberta.
    I find the capacity of Silver lacking, and I'm worried that since Silver is crucial being this old is a huge problem.

    • @Skier72
      @Skier72  2 года назад

      Agreed. Ranking was screwed up for some categories of this video.
      Tbh when I was at Nakiska this season, capacity of Silver seemed to be just fine. I think the chairs come every 5-6 seconds (2,400 pph), which is fairly large. Of course, I have heard from certain people that Silver had some issues this season. More specifically with the chains at the top terminal (lift mechanics were pushing chairs around the bend at the top for a few days this season).

      Kannanaskis being a pseudo provincial park its good that theres no condo time share kind a deal aroind for the mountain... sure it means they will never make as much money that they could... but heh its a provincial protected area visited by many canadians and most albertans...

    I bought a season pass for a few years here when you could get one for the cost of a single day ticket at Sunshine or Louise. It really turned out to be a false economy due to the terrible snow. Skate around on ice and eat incredibly expensive bad food or invest little more than 30 minutes driving for world-class snow at Sunshine. Had my skis stolen off the rack here one day too.

    • @Skier72
      @Skier72  2 года назад +1

      Yes exactly. I should have mentioned that in my review. The original plan for Nakiska was to build it on Mt. Shark near Canmore, which gets much better snow. But due to a few sections on the access road that were less than ideal for Olympic traffic, the decision was made to change it to Mt. Allen.
      Sunshine really does have the best snow. Honestly, everything you described about Nakiska are the reasons the ski hill is not an international destination resort.
