    I love your videos, very helpful. I am just starting my studies on coding. One thing that really has me confused is when you know to use a modifier because some of the tests that i have taken would specify the left or right side but didnt require a modifier! When do you know whether or not to append a modifier? Thanks.

  • @Cozetta-e5k
    @Cozetta-e5k 3 года назад +3

    I'm looking for a video to help me learn how to look for a modifier when it's time to use one? The HCPCS coding book doesn't tell me which modifier to go get. The index in the ICD-10-CM coding book told me where to go next to get the code I needed. The HCPCS coding book doesn't do that? I have to be able to know where the modifier is that I need. Or is it just a matter of reading and reading until I find the modifier that I need?

    • @spongebob8445
      @spongebob8445 3 года назад

      Yeah that's the thing about the 3 code set books. There's so many differences between ICD-10 , HCPCS, AND CPT coding books and rules.
      I had a good instructor for ICD-10 last year so surprisingly even though I'm a bit rusty I'm way better at coding icd-10 than i am at CPT. I have only touched my HCPCS book once during a cpt test

      Exactly. I asked my instructor, too, on quite a bit of things in the class and she never answered at times and then when she did she couldn't explain it anymore than I could. She was bold to tell us we could e-mail her if we have any questions but I almost felt bad to do that because she couldn't explain how to do the coding.

    • @spongebob8445

      @@Cozetta-e5k yeah i had email my instructor many times, but wouldn't get a response until 2 to 4 days later or not at all. Also she refused to speak on the phone and wouldn't host a zoom class.
      Was your instructor for cpt coding? I was supposed to learn that and stuff about hcpcs from her but never did. Atleast i finished my program for what that is worth lol.
      What i have been doing now is trial and error; failing the practice exams that i purchased from the AAPC website until i understand it.

    Wat are the difference between modifiers and icd 10

    • @ContempoCoding
      @ContempoCoding  6 месяцев назад

      Modifiers and ICD-10 codes serve different purposes in medical billing. Modifiers are two-character codes added to procedure codes (CPT/HCPCS) to provide extra details, such as indicating a more complex procedure or a repeat service. In contrast, ICD-10 codes are alphanumeric and describe diagnoses and medical conditions, ensuring standardized documentation of diseases and health conditions worldwide. Essentially, modifiers explain "how" a procedure was performed, while ICD-10 codes explain "why" the procedure was necessary.

    Can someone please explain the difference between modifiers 51 and 59

    • @angelinag.woodruff8378
      @angelinag.woodruff8378 3 года назад

      Modifier 51 is defined as multiple surgeries/procedures. Multiple surgeries performed on the same day, during the same surgical session.
      Diagnostic Imaging Services subject to the Multiple Procedure Payment Reduction that are provided on the same day, during the same session by the same provider.
      Modifier 59 Distinct Procedural Service indicates that a procedure is separate and distinct from another procedure on the same date of service.
      Typically, this modifier is applied to a procedure code that is not ordinarily paid separately from the first procedure but should be paid per the specifics of the situation.
