@Jane Ryan-Douglas During English rule in Ireland there were Penal Laws where the Irish people were not allowed to speak their native language. They were not allowed to go to school or play Irish games or to practise their religion under pain of imprisonment or even death. So it really is amazing that it didn't die out altogether.
Thank you!😊 I’m making it now! I loved hearing it in Irish! My ancestors and relatives in Ireland 🇮🇪 would be so proud and pleased to know I’m trying this out! Bless you!
Today you made me cry and that's a hard thing to get a 60 year old man like me to do. When I was a small child my great grandma would let me watch her in the kitchen. She came from Ireland to America in 1901 as a 17 year old girl who lied about her age so they would let her go on the ship alone. In the kitchen she only spoke Irish and I remember being able to understand what she said. But she passed when I was only seven and I've not heard Irish being spoken since 1967. It was forbidden in our house. I cried because I understood half of what you said and I am shocked that I understood a single word. Thank you so much for making me remember.
I love the Irish language. I fell in love in my early teens when I discovered Clannad's music and some of my favorite poets are Irish. I taught myself a bit of the language and tried writing poetry in it myself. I even got the first Harry Potter book in Irish.
I made this Irish Soda bread for Saint Patrick's day and it turned out beautiful and tasted so good! I did not know I could bake bread. I think I see Hot Cross Buns in my future. Thanks for all your wonderful recipes!

This one reminded me a lot of my great grandma. She was born in Belfast, but her mom was from Ireland. She used to make soda bread and scones it was so good. I wasn't really old enough to learn how to make them when she passed away. So the recipes went with her. 😞😟 I'll definitely have to try and make this. I'm shocked at how easy it looks

If I hadn’t made it myself, I wouldn’t believe it wasn’t made in a bakery by a master baker. I always make bread for Thanksgiving, and this year, I’ll be making this. Gemma that was brilliant! I have tried many times to learn Irish and it is a not an easy language. You did such a beautiful job!👏👏🙆♀️ I love that you gave us the background on Irish soda bread. I never knew why we cut it with the knife. I love that part now! I'm going to try to learn how to say the blessing. My Ma made us Irish soda bread usually just in March because the recipe she had was much more involved than this lovely recipe. Her's involved lots of kneading & " beating " the dough. Yes! The friend who gave her the recipe said to beat it! 😆I'm so excited to try this recipe as the one we have is a hit or miss type of recipe. We spent many a day with some less than lovely bread which we ate anyway LOL. I also can't wait to teach my niece sevda how to make this beautiful bread. I loved the color of your soda bread. As always sorry for my long comments. I've tried to give you a bit of a break from me. Really appreciate you working so hard not only on the recipe, but on the special treat of doing the recipe in Irish! Much love👩🍳💚💚❤
Lovely! Believe it or not, I can get Kerrygold butter and cheeses here in New Mexico. The butter is so sweet and flavorful, I just love it. And perfect for an Irish soda bread, yum!
I like my soda bread with raisins. Recently I started adding fennel seeds in the dough and I love the flavor of it. The licorice aroma is awesome. I went to Ireland in 2013 but never knew about this bread then. Loved the hauntingly beautiful scenic beauty especially in Galway, would move there in a heartbeat 😊😊

Don’t understand a word but I love Gaelic. Sounds so nice
Love your irish speaking. Thank you Gemna
Thank you for your kind words, Susan! Hope you enjoy this recipe !
You are an absolute Wonder...thank you for the Gaelic words...
I loooove your accent either you speak English or Irish! Gosh you've got such positive energy! I'll try this recipe. Looks delicious!
Thank you so much, Natassa!
I love learning irish and i love the recipe
Very nice 👌👌
No problem on the long comments! I do love reading through your stories! Can't wait to see your results!
@@biggerbolderbaking Thanks Gemma ☘
OMG! How could I have missed this? What a great idea! Loved it! I hope someday I can learn Gaelic (Irish or Scottish, or both). It sounds beautiful!
i made soda bread for my friend who lives in canada for work. i ate half of it before i could give it to him, but he loved it.
Good job, Bold Baker! Sharing is indeed caring 😉
Hi Gemma, It was so nice to hear the Irish Language, it sounds lovely! Loved the recipe too. It's so simple but looks like it'll be delicious :)
Simple is best!
Thank ya Gemma!! I just made my own Irish soda bread 🍞!! My sister told me bout you ,!.
That’s fantastic, Jennifer. I hope it turned out well. Glad to have you here.
Lovely! Believe it or not, I can get Kerrygold butter and cheeses here in New Mexico. The butter is so sweet and flavorful, I just love it. And perfect for an Irish soda bread, yum!
YUM
I like my soda bread with raisins. Recently I started adding fennel seeds in the dough and I love the flavor of it. The licorice aroma is awesome. I went to Ireland in 2013 but never knew about this bread then. Loved the hauntingly beautiful scenic beauty especially in Galway, would move there in a heartbeat 😊😊
