I had a Granny that was born in Ireland. She migrated to Australia in the 50s. Hence I’m an Aussie. She made Soda bread every time we visited. As well as tatie bread. I lost her in my early twenties and only had one or maybe two lessons on Soda bread. I wish I was more interested. She used to make it on a griddle not in the oven. When I tried this in my late twenties it wasnt anything like my Granny’s. Anyway I got a little disappointed. But here I am 58 doing your recipe and yippee I did it. Although Granny never used an egg I asked her to go with it with me and help. Lol. It’s beautiful. Although yes she used whole meal flour too I just had white on hand and I’m very happy. Thankyou beautiful for this recipe. Your the only one I found with butter just like Granny’s. Bless ya. 🌻

I made this yesterday for St Patrick’s Day. I’d never made any soda bread before and it was delicious!! I made it for my parents too, my mum couldn’t get enough of it. My granda was from Ireland so she had memories of eating it when she was young and it was wonderful to be able to make something so meaningful and delicious. Thank you! 😊

Since I have watched and analysed this video I have stopped buying bread instead I make it myself every week now and it always yealds together beautifully I am a very passionate baker and this is such a fun, easy, quick and inexpensive bread thank goodness that it's hard to find this bread in any English stores otherwise I wouldn't have an excuse to bake it.
And I know that they say that "us english people hate Irish people" but personally I've never met such friendly amazing passionate bakers as the Irish.
I would love to thank my Irish food teacher Mrs Mooney for giving me the amazing ability of how to be a successful baker I'm super proud. 💟🍴🍫🍦

The first time I tasted homemade soda bread was from mum's best friend from Ireland.
I've never made Irish soda bread before and want to get it perfect the first time round so apologies to Gordon, Jamie and Delia but I've chosen Gemma's foolproof Mamma's recipe and being Irish goes highly in her favour, I feel strongly inclined to follow her lead. A college pal made us soda bread - first time I had heard of it. Fast forward decades, to the 20-teens -I learn to bake. Just recently I see this recipe suggested on you tube. So I tried it, but I realized my whole wheat flour was old. I added 2.5 Tablespoons of sugar to the recipe against bitterness, and crossed my fingers, as well as the bread. (Not forgetting the Fair Folk).
I hope you don't mind that I LOVE it with the sugar added. I made it the next week according to the recipe, but it didn't reach me. No waste! My brother-in-law happily claimed it.
Thank you, Gemma, for a recipe a lot of my family enjoys. And for a happy memory for me of faintly-sweet soda bread.

Looks delicious Gemma!!! I'll never forget the first time my mother taught me how to make Irish soda bread! The recipie had been in our family for decades! I laugh when I remember how scared I got when the crust was hard! I thought it had burned and started crying because I assumed we didn't leave enough one for the fairies to get out!!! After my first bite I changed my mind!! There really is nothing better than the family classics!
Thank you for bring back those memories!-Sara
